HD DVD Ships 1.5 Million Movie Titles

By the Betanews Staff | Published November 16, 2006, 5:13 PM

HD DVD showed continued momentum in the next generation DVD race, with the format's backers announcing Thursday that they had shipped more than 1.5 million discs since launch. The HD DVD Promotion Group also touted the number of titles available, now 110, with at least another three dozen more expected before the end of the year.

The HD DVD external dive add-on for the Xbox 360 began shipping last week, initially getting positive reviews. Additionally, work continues on the second-generation players from Toshiba, with some retailers marking down their first-generation players by as much as $120 to attract consumers. It's still unclear if the format is outselling Blu-ray, however, as neither side has provided concrete sales numbers.

Is it me or has anyone else into HD movies noticed that the new releases are dual format? It ticks me off because they cost almost twice as much and if I wanted the standard version,Id get it on regular dvd. I havent noticed Blu-ray doing that, and I dont like paying close to $40.00 for one movie.I hope they dont continue to do this. It seems to me its just another way to make more money. How about a HD format and a combo format for someone that wants it that way!

Regardless of all the PR spin, I'll wait until cheap dual-format players are available. I'm not getting sucked into buying crap that's painful to use in 3-5 years.

Wow.. 1.5 Million movies.. I guess it costs about $.50 per DVD to stamp. (I bet that price is high) .. I guess if your rich buy both blue ray and HD DVD.. no big deal.. but really why would anyone need to buy one?

Great.. I get 5 HD Channels on my dish network.. WOW.. a whole 5 HD channels!! for 200$ more a year!!

Score: 0

That's nothing new, CDs have never cost much to stamp. You aren't paying for the plastic, but for the content. New formats always cost more in the beginning too but really they aren't that high as it is. The costs will come down eventually. As for who would buy one, that's up to the individual. Just because you may not want to buy movies in HD doesn't mean no one else does. :)

Score: 0

While I would tend to agree (in that I don't particularly like they way either format is shaping up) I can see why people would buy into the upgrade. Watching DVD on a PC really highlights it's shortcomings as a movie format, as the quality is still lacking.

That said, many people will be plugging these HD devices into SD TVs - and there really is very little to be gained from doing so. If you've got a fancy 1080i/p TV (that actually has that REAL resolution, not just the processing capability) then BluRay or HD-DVD will really be impressive. Same if you're using a PC with even just a 17" LCD or greater - a massive potential improvement over DVD. But for average joe with a standard CRT or first-gen plasma/LCD (or projector) there's nothing to be gained.

Unfortunately there's no easy way to tell consumers that. ;)

Score: 0

|

"no big deal.. but really why would anyone need to buy one? "

So I suppose you are still watching TV in black and white?

Simple reason for it - best picture quality possible. Even if you choose one format and it loses, whatever you've invested in it will still work.

I do agree about cable/dish prices - it is ridiculous how few HD channels there are and that its an extra cost. There are probably 200+ channels I would like to see them get rid of.

Score: 0

|

Why? Great question.
Answer? You don't need it.

The improvement from DVD to HD-DVD is slim compared to that of VHS to DVD. The high price alone argues against it, unless you like wasting money on unsettled formats. Only a d-d fool would buy this or Blu-Ray for now.

Score: 0

Last I knew it was the consumer that chooses the format. If the we as a consumer continue to buy HD DVD then this will be the winning format.

No, but I'm also not naive enough to think that companies ship products that aren't selling. If you ran a business, would you keep ordering stock if you weren't clearing what you already had?

Shipping and selling are different, thank you Captain Obvious. www.dictionary.com can tell me that. So perhaps you could troll somewhere else, where people are foolish enough to believe your bulls*** and propaganda?

Score: 0

He is right. But it doesn't really matter since we don't know how many titles bluray has shipped.

When I go into Best Buy, there are about equal amounts of BluRay and HD-DVD product on the shelves. So if bluray has "shipped" less, then HD-DVD would appear to be "selling" more.

Shipped products that don't sell do eventually go back to the manufacturer. But the same thing happens for both formats, so again, it would be nice to know shipping numbers for both.
