Halo 3: Not Game Over, But Awful Close

By Ed Oswald | Published September 25, 2007, 12:49 PM

Halo 3: Launch DayThe CE and tech media is billing Halo 3 as the "PS3 killer." While that may not be too far from the truth, it may also be a bit premature. Either way, time is running out.

PERSPECTIVE It's just what the doctor ordered. After a rough couple of months, the launch of Halo 3 is giving the Xbox franchise the good swift kick in the pants Microsoft needed to get itself back on track.

The company had just made its way through an embarrassing admission that as many as 30% of its consoles may have been defective. It also watched as Nintendo seemingly came out of nowhere and took the wind from both its and Sony's sails.

However, Halo 3 could mark Microsoft's comeback in the console space. The game is the Xbox 360's so-called "killer app:" that piece of software or feature that sells the product for you. The numbers for pre-orders were simply astronomical: 1.5 million plus, the highest for any game ever.

For those living under a rock for much of this decade, here's a quick rundown of what the Halo story is about. The game centers around the travails of Master Chief, who leads a band of marines on a quest to save humanity from an alien invasion.

The story is pretty much your classic first-person shooter game, allowing you to blast your way to rid the earth of these vile creatures. You can also choose to play in multiplayer mode with a group of friends to finish the 'campaign,' or choose to play against one another.

It's not too much to assume some of those pre-orders came from customers new to the console. Monday night, the manager of my local GameStop told me that, in her experience, games like BioShock were able to sell consoles on their own. She was almost sure that Halo's allure would be able do the same.

Believe me when I say the graphics are as good as the promotional pictures show: Even on a standard definition monitor they look as good as some of the high-definition shots of early 360 games. Better yet, the game is easy to pick up, even for the casual gamer, and the blood and gore is not too in-your-face -- making it more palatable to parents.

All of these factors add up to a game with mass appeal, and enough attraction to lure consumers into spending the $350 to 'finish the fight,' as Microsoft's PR team has asked gamers to do.

This now puts tremendous pressure on Sony to produce. The PS3 is still without that "killer app" spoke of earlier: too much longer without one, and it may be too late for the console to ever pose a credible threat to either the Wii or the 360.

Sony's only hope may come in the form of Final Fantasy, which in and of itself is as big a game for its platform as Halo is to Xbox. While some may argue that it wouldn't be fair to compare the two side by side, in actuality it is.

Let me ask those who may say that if FF is not enough for a gamer to pick up the PS3, what is? Blu-ray is certainly not selling the consoles either.

To some extent, Halo puts the squeeze on Nintendo as well. To date, there are really only two standout games on that platform: Zelda and Metroid. The console's price and haptic capabilities will only take it so far. Too many of the Wii's games are simply too simplistic right now to satisfy many.

Microsoft's next moves are very important. Since this Halo is billed as the last, the 360 will soon be without a standout franchise. What does Redmond do? Does it take the risk and try to create an all new one, or does it attempt to lure others to the platform, possibly even Final Fantasy?

Only time will tell. But the ball is in Microsoft's court, and they are amid a full-court press for next-generation console supremacy.

The verdict is in: I bought Halo 3 on launch day and only had a fewminutes to try it out. Initially I was unhappy but once I got into some extremely intense levels I decided this game rocks.

BTW, I went to BB today to get a snap on keyboard for my controller and ALL XBOX Pro's were sold out, they had 4 Halo editions and a whole bunch of Elites.

When I was there on Halo launch day, they had a good 50 Halo editions and the same amound of pro's in stock.

I guess a good title does sell consoles.

As soon as Sony starts doing something positive worth mentioning, then I'm sure we'll all read about it here.

Until that actually happens, perhaps it's best that you stick with your Sony/PS3/Blu-ray fanzine sites that tell you what you all want to hear.

When you keep clamoring for attention, you have to be prepared to accept the negative attention in the process.

I'm not suprised the CC had copies being that most people put their orders in at a GS or other videogame store. Places like CC, Bestbuy, CompUSA normally have many left over copies after the rush. They just try to get in on the dibs. This is one reason that unless I'm going to be at a 12 am event, I don't even PRE-Order games from GS or game store anymore.

Score: 0

|

I was stunned to walk into my local CC yesterday after dinner on the 26th. I talked to a salesperson and in passing made a comment about Halo 3 and all the hoopla. She pointed me to the area where they have Halo 3 and I was shocked to see an enormously large quantity of the game left in stock. The salesperson said they had really not sold many of what they had in stock. There must have been 15 unsold sets that came in the helmet and far more of the other releases. After seeing the news stories about NYC, etc, I was utterly astounded.

I realize the game may sell better in some areas than others and this was expected to be _the_ game for the XBox 360. With Sony suffering the delay of GTA IV that gives Microsoft a bit of a boost for the holiday season.

1.5 million pre sells is not a bad number. Many games fail to sell that number period.

Oh come now Ed Oswald. You knew exactly what you were doing when you wrote this piece. You know whom you serve here in Beta"News". The 360/anti-Sony fan base on this site is easily 20-1 and you cater to that. You writing 'PERSPECTIVE' actually proves that Ed Oswald = Microsoft Propagandist. These are your viewpoints and opinions about PS3v360. But I think you need to take it a step further and write 'PERSPECTIVE' on every piece you write. So now I ask you Ed Oswald, when's the last time you've written a non anti-Sony piece.
I know I’ve asked you and you’ve "answered" this before… So let me word it a little differently.

None of them are very impressive when you look at the over all cost and game selection. They just plain suck compared to a high end PC... I would rather put the $600 into a PC and get a better video card or something and play hundreds of games , then buy a console box and only have a few dozen to select from...

Least Sony was smart and made it backward compatible so their library was bigger at the get go, but really... if you had a PS2 why go to a PS3 until more is out there? Same can be said of Xbox, and Wii, really...

Microsoft needs to do two things to put the last nail in Sony’s coffin.

Support divx natively.

Drop the exclusive support for HD-DVD and supply a combo Blue-ray/Hd-dvd drive both internally and optional external combo drive for existing xboxes.

If they did this Sony will be out of business tomorrow and have a stock price around 0.1$.
But Microsoft is no long what they were 5 years ago so they will probably stick to their current strategy and keep the PS3 in the marked just to make sure that there is competition and thereby avoiding a 2 billion bill from the communistic EU.

id say though, sonys stock would drop a bit, but not much, sonys got players, dvds, tvs, car stereos, sound systems, and soo much more.. they will do ok, just close down the ps system.. wich is sad for me, ps2 was the s***!

- Forget the ridiculous 'tabloid' take on things.
There is not a single sovereign member state in the EU that has a 'planned' or 'command' economy.

.....and btw even the most 'free market' is really no such thing and has various constraints, human, legal and regulatory.

"State run corporations"

- So there are a few non-privatised companies left in the EU.

So what?
That is not a credible definition of a communist or "communistic" entity.

The UK is not a "communistic" state because we have had whole nationalised industries since the end of WW2 (and still have a handful of state enterprises).

"Democratic? Left-wing maybe"

- Oh yeah, how revealing, of course.
The only democracy that really counts is one that gives you a result you agree with, huh?

Europe as a whole is extremely democratic these days, from PR maximising the 'voice' of a wide variety of view and opinion to a hell of a lot of genuine power devolved down to the states/counties, cities, towns, regions and people it affects.

If you don't know this stuff then just stop commenting on it cos it's pretty clear you have little idea of what you're talking about.

The EU itself remains exactly as the sovereign nation states want it to be, being directed by the Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ministers and the appointees of the democratically elected Govs that compose the EU within an agreed framework of law.

"Limiting Consumers choice (Of cause to protect stupid consumers according to them)
Destructive subsidizing"

- That's just a flippant response to the fact that we in Europe will never agree to a so-called 'free market' free-for-all.

Get over it, we won't.

"Forcing stupid products on cosumers that no one wants"

- Er, you'll find that in our markets the products "no one wants" remain unsold as they would be everywhere else.

"Spreading the wealth of (once) rich nations to everyone"

- LMAO.

Go read about how it works, go look at how the once incredibly poor, undeveloped and extremely needy areas and citizens of Europe have been raised up.

From Ireland to Spain to Portugal etc etc those countries that were once recipients of aid are now strong healthy contributing members of the community.....a process that will continue in the new entrant countries.

That was the entire point and it has worked exceptionally well.

"Voluntary?"

- Yes.

The EU did not force a single member to join.

" How come no westen EU contries is holding election on memebership anymore."

- There's not one of them so ideologically insane as to want to leave.

But each and every one of the member states remain sovereign and fully able to do so under international law, actually.

Countries want in to join the EU, not to leave it - despite what a tiny unrepresentative nutter minority might claim.

" Maybe because EU would only consists of easten europe after that?"

- If you honestly think that then I am sorry to tell you that you are woefully misinformed.

Even in the UK (probably the most 'Euro-sceptic' of the member states) we won't touch our 'pull out' political parties with a barge-pole.

We had a serious attempt at pushing this claim when the British tory party committed suicide over Europe in 2001.
They made the 2001 election a 'save the £' election (which, given what the then tory leadership were saying was in effect an 'in or out' general election.
They lost by a landslide, utterly smashed out of sight.

Even with a supposedly large 'Euro-sceptic' element us Brits, when offered the chance, wanted nothing to do with such a patently irrational and self-harming course of action.

"As for freedom I don't thing the west has alot of that these days."

- ......and what?
You idea of 'freedom' is allowing international corporations and big businesses to do anything they like?
No thanks.
In the EU we at least have some kind of brake against all of that absurdity, thanks to the collective voice we gain by having the EU.

"I'm happy I left EU when there was still time... "

- Good for you.

I could care less what you think of the EU, but if you're going to comment on it at least try and stay within the bounds of reality.

"Communistic"

FFS, wake up.

Europe is a capitalist grouping.....but one where the demands of business and 'capital' are not the only priority listened to.

.....and the idea that there can only be one version of capitalism is a wholly false conceit.

It just means Microsoft spent alot of money buying people off. The fact so many people are saying it's not what it's cracked up to be, and fails to live up to the hype, is bad news for Microsoft.

What's even worse, is the bad news for Xbox360 owners. A full year has passed since Gears Of War was released, and you have Halo3 which fails to even meet that standard. If Microsoft/Bungie can't get any more out of the 360, don't expect anyone else to either.

this article is a little silly if you ask me...the PS3 has sold more than 5 million consoles to date...got some great games coming out...rumors circling of another price drop...blu-ray still out selling HD-DVD...

and while I'll wait to pass judgment on Halo 3 until i play it myself...the reviews im reading (especially outside the US where the Halo/360 hype is nowhere near what it is in the US) is that Halo 3 is a great game, but falls flat on the visuals...been hearing rumors of lots of jaggies and aliasing problems...but i have not yet played it so ill wait....

I'm still expecting Haze to be a shocker to many...its a PS3 exclusive FPS that is still flying under many people's radar....and god forbid if square ever actually announces a FF VII remake for the PS3...the Japanese will start selling their children to get PS3's...

we shall see how things go...but to say the PS3 is dead less than a year into its life cycle is a little much...Sony can afford to ride this one out for the time being because unlike MS their last gen console has a real life cycle, and is still making Sony buttloads of money

The game looks amazing, look at what the system can do. Well Lair is out and it looks amazing but the game is well, not fun. I'll say it again maybe you should read a little slower to understand, nice graphics do not make a game good. If that was the case the Wii would be in trouble.

By the way I hope it is better then the first Killzone. Then again it would be hard to be much worse. A lot of reviewers didn't even like it. It seems that any game that is an exclusive to Sony is awesome which is wrong.

Probably not, as evidenced by the rather lackluster titles already published by Sony themselves.

I would expect the games to look good, as the GPU that Sony was forced to accept from NVIDIA (either this or nothing...) was based on last-gen technology that a lot of PC gamers have been using for the past 2 years. Of course developers know how to code the graphics properly... at least they should.

The rest of the architecture for the PS3 is a nightmare... too 'advanced' for its own good. There are numerous other consoles throughout history that have all had highly advanced cutting-edge hardware architectures for their time, but suffered a horrible fate because of it.

It was the same way with the Sega Saturn. About the only individuals who could properly and efficiently code for that platform were Yu Suzuki and Sega's own AM2 research and development team. Hardly anyone else either knew how to code for it or wanted to. The hardware deviations from 'the norm' were simply too extreme for its time, and other developers quickly lost interest.

I have no doubt that games for the PS3 will only get better as time goes on... they haven't much choice. However, to release a next-gen console without giving developers a chance to become intimately familiar with the hardware was just ridiculous, and I hope they will learn their lesson from it. The PS3 deserves 3rd place (or 4th, 5th, or possibly 6th, if you count the PS2 and Nintendo's portables).

Microsoft and Nintendo rightfully deserve the success they've enjoyed by offering platforms that are easy to work with that offer excellent rewards for the developers and consumers alike when the game is finished.

Most analysts seem to barely understand how to operate their TV let along give insightfulness to this current console battle.

The bottom line is one that XBoxers don't want to hear - the XBox 360 shot its wad and is done. Yes, Xboxers will buy Halo in droves - even if EVERY Xbox minus the 30% defective ones or about 6 million current users all bought one, that is about 5% of US households. It's NOTHING. It's a fine game and a fine system but MS had illusions the 360 would sell like the PS2 - about 100 million - it it NOT going to happen.

Are there hardcore gamers who are absolutely committed to playing and paying for the newest and latest - yes, there are 25-35 million Americans who fall into that category and they will choose or buy both PS3 and or an Xbox - but that is all.

On the other hand, 80% of American households but are casual gamers who play flash games, poker online, etc ... and that is who Nintendo is correctly chasing.

The audience is now irrevocable and CLEANLY divided between hardcore gamers and casual gamers and casual gamers - while they have always been therea nd Nintendo has always been seen mostly as a casual gamer system (certainly post PS1) BUT the crucial difference is now the WII is something ANYONE can play in 2 minutes. You personally might sneer at that but the fact is that 75% of people interested in VG's are NOT that committed to practicing, going online and logging 1,000 hours. They don't measure the value of that - it would be like trying to convince people to run a marathon - they jsut don't care that much and Nintendo was smart enough to realize that. As long as Nintendo doesn't screw it up - they will win the "body count" race for this generation. It's over. Nintendo passed MS and is not looking back. Who will be second? Most likley PS3 ... especially if you count worldwide - that is why MS ahs pretty much lost. It might be a split in Europe between the two but in Japan, it will be like 15 to 1 so MS Xbox will defintely be third within 9-14 months.

This round is over. Maybe with the XBox 720.

Wii maybe charming right now but when it loses that it will die a fast death.

Microsoft played it right and pretended to be the underdog but made a beast at the right price.

I think that statement should go without saying. It is rather common knowledge that the PS3 was a poorly designed architecture from the developer's point of view.

It's not just that enough developers don't understand the architecture well enough... it's that it seems they don't want or care to, and that has been stated on several occasions (and as evidenced by most of the rather lackluster games available to date, and nothing too impressive on the horizon).

From what I have read, Sony has yet to release a decent toolkit to help developers along that path. Kutaragi-san's (PS3 creator and former President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment) dream seemed to fail to include all the people who would take what he and IBM designed and make proper use of it. Who knows... maybe upon stepping down he knew something the rest of us didn't, and wanted to make himself scarce when the inevitable backlash from angry customers and investors ensued.

...and surely your comment on emulating the 360 is a joke. :)

I agree completely on the PS2. To date it's still the console I use the most. I was completely surprised to see the explosion of color from Odin Sphere... that game sure pushed the limits of that console.

Are you a developer? the hardware is different...it is a new take on how a "CPU" works. Sure the tools are not the best, however that can be said of any new hardware including the 360.

It takes time for developers to come up to speed on how a new architecture works. The Cell architecture in the PS3 offers considerably more horsepower than what is in the M$ 360. It is just going to take another generation or two of games to start really showing.

remember M$ rushed out the 360 over a year before the PS3 and Wii since the first XBox failed so badly. So you are seeing games which push the 360 for all its got now since developers have some experience.

The cell on paper may be great but to bad the other supporting hardware is not so good. The memory design is old school and very limiting to the cell. This has been discussed here several times by the way.

I can not believe that you would even bring the Wii up in your comment. The Wii will never able to be compared to the 360 as far as power goes so give that up. The Wii is fun but seriously underpowered when compared to the 360 or the PS3. Rushed out and failed you truly are pathetic.

What I find amusing about your posts you state the ps3 is more powerful (on paper it is but has yet to show in real life) I am sure you can do a search and look for news articles that state the xbox360 is much easier to program for whereas the ps3 not so much.

Yet, you go on and on about the wii how its better then all systems, yet has the worst in graphics, Halo has always relied on gameplay and ease of use for any person looking to play a fps.

Xbox had more power then the ps2, yet did fairly well, they came late to the game, it would have been stupid for xbox to continue to develop for the xbox and not promote a new system when everyone else is. Nintendo doesn't develop for gamecube anymore, that must have been a failure too?

More power as has been demonstrated by the wii doesn't equate better games, if the control is terrible, which has been the case for ps3 games. Personally (IMO), I think the wii is going to become a novelty and lose some of its steam, but we'll see.

1- PS3 has nothing besides the blueray to make itsell right now. Games are lacking but by christmas that will not be a issue with great titles coming out near xmas.

2- producing games on the PS3 is more expensive initially, but once a company makes one game, the rest to follow will get cheaper and take less time to make.

3- If FF moves to xbox the PS3 will take a significant hit which it may not be able to recover from.

In summery the PS3 will not be on a level playing field until the 2nd wave of games comes out for that system (which is looking like late 08-09. Those caliber of graphics will trump anything the xbox can produce. When this happens the power MAY s*** to sony. But the question remains... will it be too late by then? Nate usually slams them (no offense Nate, but you typically do), and Ed is critical of them frequently. That said, you should really learn to read, since the article clearly states at the beginning that it's an "PERSPECTIVE" (translation: OPINION).

1- I wouldn't say "great" titles in every case, certainly nothing that screams BLOCKBUSTER. But then again, everyone's taste in games is different.

2- What makes you think it becomes cheaper for them after the first game? Actually, cost doesn't change at all unless they reuse the same engine and recycle graphics for every game. That works to an extent to save some development time, but it's not very innovative to generate "cookie cutter" game templates.

They lost over 4 billion on the original Xbox, they have lost over 6 billion on the 360 (development costs, and repair costs).

They screwed the original Xbox ownes over, by releasing an entirely new console after less than 3 years.

Do you think they would survive doing the same again? The 360 will be around until 2012 at least (and stuck with DVD drive and games that can't use the HDD).

All Halo 3 shows, is how little things have actually progressed since Gears Of War a year back. Don't expect anything to change very much on the 360, from this point in, for at least another 5 years.

I've never had a single issue with the 360, possibly because I'm one of the few that actually knows how to follow instructions on proper care and use of the console.

Aside from that, I cannot deny the hardware has issues for millions of people. But Microsoft has no need to develop another platform yet (even though they are probably already working on one, which is the way it goes). The 360 is a very successful console (not in all regions, as their marketing leaves a lot to be desired in Japan). In that same respect, Sony had no need to work on their next gen console either, as the PS2 continues to be an extremely successful console. That didn't stop Kutargi from working on the PS3 as soon as the PS2 was finished at the turn of the century.

Minor corrections to the hardware layout, DVD drive, and a CPU that generates less heat and consumes less power, and the 360 will have absolutely no downsides. To the best of my knowledge, that would make 1 hardware revision since launch. If that's what it takes to become even more successful, I say go for it. After all, Sony had 15 hardware revisions for the PS2, and it still has the same problems.

When speaking of devolopement u could not be more wrong, I have programming experience, and its not a typical "engine" per say but the individual game developers all create their own custom tools for programming, both the xbox and ps3 have dev tools, but all companies port over their own customized tools, the first time porting these (which most on this gen dev them from scratch) its VERY time consuming, after its done once its done, the next project time is spent more on the game than making the tools for the game. Thats why u keep hearing the xbox dev tools are so much better, cause their vanilla dev tool is, if MS dose anyone thing right, they have good program engineers and know how to create tools to expedite work more efficiently.

It has sold just 1.5 mil copies for presales, that does not include people who waited.

So here's what we've got...

Nintendo Wii is just downright FUN. Good games, and lots of potential for great, innovative, fun games. No wonder they're the king of the crop, and if Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid 4 make their way to the Wii or Xbox 360, then hands down, Sony may as well give up on PS3.

The only thing that has the potential to help give PS3 a recovery is FF and MGS4, but I given Square's distaste for PS3's marketing I am still betting that we haven't heard the final word on whether PS3 is the final destination for FF13.

As for Microsoft, they already have some decent games. If they can take this opportunity to swoon Square-Enix and Konami in their direction, we could see Castlevania, Metal Gear, and Final Fantasy and they could do as well as Nintendo.

PS3 and Blueray is the Betamax of the current generation game consoles. It may be better, technically speaking, but if you can't get the games or the gamers, then it's GAME OVER.

EDIT: I should note that because of the limited graphics power of Wii, I doubt seriously FF13 will head to the Wii without a major rework by Square-Enix. That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see other games come out on Wii and FF13 go to Xbox 360.

Score: 0

|

Well Ninja Gaiden 2 is confirmed for xbox360 now and it looks AWESOME, plus squenix is making some games for Xbox, so I see it possibly happening.

I think Sony did what every other maker did before (3d0, dreamcast, turbographix) tried using tech that was too new and not tested.

That blu-ray drive is going to be the death of them unless they can find a compelling reason to pay the extra.

Score: 0

|

Final Fantasy's creator Sakaguchi has already expressed his rather strong discontent for the PS3's architecture (along with many other developers), and loves the 360. The game engine for Final Fantasy XIII is multi-platform, so porting wouldn't be difficult at all.

Score: 0

|

Now that would really hurt the playstation franchise to see it's biggest hitters go multisystem. FF and Metal Gear on something other than a playstaion I can hear the cries already.

Frankly I fail to see the excitment with Gran Turismo. Run a race over and over to get money then rerun the race to get more to buy a new car, then upgrade, then have to race more to buy an other car and complete the upgrade circle again and again. Oh boy what a joy.

Score: 0

I have no allusions of seeing MGS on a platform other than Sony's, but stranger things have happened. It's not really my cup of tea anyway, so I really don't care... but it sure has my brother wanting a PS3.

Poor guy.

Score: 0

I disagree on MGS... MGS on the Wii, with using the Wiimote for tactical espionage action and close-quarter combat would be the most ideal, innovative use of the Wiimote to date.

Score: 0

I played GT on the Playstation. BORING! I just don't get why people enjoy that game. Metal Gear doesn't excite me at all either. I actually tried Forze and to be honest I didn't like it either. People bash it all the time, but honestly the only racing game I can stand is Need For Speed. I need some fregin ACTION!

If I had to name my favorite series of all time it would probably haft to be Call of Duty.

Score: 0

|

I'm not thinking about the engine so much as the graphics quality and I hate to say it, but the polygon counts being used is always going to matter to Square-Enix.

You may or may not recall, but the reason Squaresoft left Nintendo the first time around was because the N64 console was A) underpowered, and B) cartridge media. They wanted the Playstation specs and CD-based media, because FF7 was "huge" for that time (3 CD's).

The Wii is still in a similar situation in terms of tech specs being underpowered (compared to 360 or PS3). That said, I definitely agree that 360 would be a great target for FF13.

Score: 0

|

I didn't mean to suggest it wouldn't be nice. Innovation is what the Wii's all about. I'd love to see a lot of existing titles ported over to it, if only to give them a breath of fresh air.

I don't know why I haven't gotten a Wii yet, to be honest. I love that little thing.

Score: 0

Yeah, I think the general consensus has been that the Wii has been written off completely for being a viable option for FFXIII.

And oh yeah... I remember Squaresoft's decision well back then. FFVII was the reason I bought my first PlayStation.
