Halo 3 Beta Gaffe Angers Gamers

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

Microsoft has fixed some early issues in its Halo 3 beta offering for those who purchase the game Crackdown, as well as agreeing to extend the beta period by one week to June 10..

The beta of the next Halo game has been much hyped by Microsoft since November of last year when plans were first announced. Crackdown was released in February with the promise that those who had the disk would be rewarded with first access to the code.

On May 16 at 5:00am Pacific, game owners were to receive access, but it failed to materialize. In fact, by all accounts, it was nearly 14 hours later -- around 7:00pm Pacifc -- before the issue was finally addressed.

Angry gamers began lashing out both at Bungie and Realtime Worlds (the maker of Crackdown. Most blamed Bungie for the issue, who worked quickly to assure those concerned that it had alerted Microsoft's Xbox Live team to the error.

Some even blamed Realtime, although they had no direct involvement other than allowing the key on their discs. Spokepeople for the company said they were pleased with the way Microsoft had handled the problem and did not have further comment.

So what happened? According to Microsoft, it was an issue with Xbox Live itself. Even though an update for the Crackdown game was issued to remedy the problem, the error was with Xbox Live's systems handing the Halo 3 beta.

As a result of the problems surrounding the release of the beta, Microsoft and Bungie have decided to extend the beta test period to June 10 at 11:59pm Pacific. However, complete details beyond Microsoft's public statements on what occurred have not been released.

I look at it this way. They game is scheduled for release in September 2007 which is only a few months away. In all actuality, they did not have to release a BETA at all.

The fact that it was released this close to the actually release tells me that what you see in the BETA is pretty much what you are going to get. They are just working out some final glitches.

So all in all, be glad they released anything.

It wasn't a code error. It was a release timing error of "oh my god" almost a day! But yeah, gamers who got upset that they were delayed half a day really need to get a life.

From the looks of it, this was Microsoft's problem while most gamers were yelling at Bungie (Halo 3 developer).

Wow, I've never seen such a massive negative reaction to a major first party console game before like Halo 3 is suffering right now.

Halo 3 was supposed to be the big game Microsoft kept bragging about - just wait for Halo 3 has been all we've heard for the past year and a half. And what did the game turn out to be in reality?

* No dedicated servers - p2p networking which is laggy

* Only 16 players per game

* Only slightly improved over Halo 2 last gen graphics Someone needs to tell Bungie that gamers are long passed being impressed with shiny metal on objects.

If this was some third party game that didn't have the millions Microsoft is spending hyping and locking down 9+ reviews it would be your utterly forgettable 6/10 fps.

"We don't care about 'graphics' we only care about 'gameplay'!"

No one should be surprised at how weak the 360 is and why the Xbox 1.5 label from developers is accurate. Just look at a mess like Gears of War where they had to force the levels into mostly tiny hallways/rooms with just a few characters on screen at once. At even then the game was a jaggy mess with a massive amount of blur to cover up the rendering problems.

With the 360 selling worse than the first Xbox and bleeding cash at the same rate and their big first party titles getting laughed at across the Net you have to wonder what the hell they are doing in a market the have no competence to compete in.

Funny, PS3 and 360 have the same 512MB RAM. (yes, 360 has another 10MB EDRAM, and the 7 SPE's each have 256k locally on the PS3, but lets not count those)... If anything, the PS3 is better, as 256Mb of that RAM is XDR and around 20 times faster than the RAM in the 360..

There are estimated 1.5 million 360's in the retail chain globally.. God only knows how many failed units in addition, with a typical failure rate of 20%

this is a beta. kind of like the downloads here at betanews, they are all works in progress. people at this site should understand the beta concept better than most, yet even in discussion at a BETA site, you fail to understand the definition of the word. bravo!

i love how you state that 16 players as a max is a fault in the game. ever play gears of war? do you complain about 4 players to a team, 8 players in a game? i don't see how having more players in a game at once makes it a better game in any way.. personally i never liked the really big maps in halo or any other fps for that matter.

and this crap about the graphics, i'm so sick of hearing people talk about graphics like that is what makes a game.. i take it you have only been gaming for a year or so.. cause ANYONE who has been gaming for a long time knows gameplay is what defines great games, NOT graphics. graphics wow the 16 year old gamers, not the veterans..

the only statement in your entire post i actually agree with is the dedicated servers part. and that is only because some idiot with a slow connection can screw up everyone else in the current p2p system.

People always use 16 player max or whatever the max of a game may be on the 360 and say that its bad because of that. I think 8-16 player games are great. In some cases, I think 16 players is too many. Having 40 people running around doesn't make the game better.

And how are the graphics lacking? I think they look great. I've actually been killed a few times while I was just looking around admiring the scenery.

And finaly comment - There is such a reaction like this because people are so excited about it. Its not going to affect sales, its actually more likely to stir up interest in it. If it was the worst game in the world and they did a beta like this and it was delayed, do you think we'd hear any complaints?

You complain that the graphics aren't much better than Halo 2, but then want us to tell Bungie we aren't impressed, and want better?

Sucks badly? Hardly. Your opinion is obviously a biased one. As a fan (one that used to hate Halo, might I add), I can say that it's going to live up to the hype. Halo 2 dropped the ball in many ways, adding crap like dual-wielding that totally screwed with the formula that made Halo 1 a blast. But Halo 3 strays from that. It feels a lot like Halo 1 all over again, something a lot of fans have been hoping for. It has some rough edges and needs tweaking -- but it's a beta, what do you expect?

"You do realize that Halo3 still has the dual wielding, right?"

Yes, I'm aware. And before I continue:

"But Halo 3 strays from that."

I never said it was removed. As of the beta, there's very few weapons you can dual-wield, and they don't dominate the game. You'll find that the majority of players don't focus on dual-wielding, either. Not like in Halo 2 at least.

My whole point was that the big change in Halo 2 was dual-wielding, which ruined it in my opinion. I still clocked in over 4,100 matchmaking games, however. Halo 3 seems to go back to its roots in many ways.

Nerfing some of the weapons was a great idea; the RL's lock-on mechanism was removed; an added recoil and increased interval between shots on the Sniper Rifle (I'm sure some will disagree) -- and the Needler is actually kickass, finally!

Who knows what kind of custom options there will be, and I'm sure the game will be tweaked before retail. I'm hoping that Bungie sticks to their guns on some things, though. Die hard snipers are really hating the Sniper Rifle changes, but I think it's for the best. Especially with Man Cannons in the mix now.

Not that the amount of 'lashing out' there seems to have been over a *beta* is warranted, considering the nature of the beast (i.e. it being a 'free' test, not a paid, finished product), but perhaps these people feel their money is being stolen for having bought crackdown merely to acquire the 'free' beta pass that came with it.

It's much like buying something with a mail-in rebate and not realizing you need the UPC to validate your purchase.
