Halo effect not enough to prevent Xbox 360 sales decline

Even though Microsoft's best selling game came out right before the holiday quarter, sales of the Xbox 360 console dipped slightly year-over-year.

Microsoft said it had shipped 4.3 million consoles during the final calendar quarter of 2007, down 2.3% from the year previous. Halo 3 was released about a week before the quarter began.

Halo provided a significant boost to the Redmond company's bottom line, breaking records for sales in its first week -- some $300 million. 2.7 million played the game over Xbox Live in the first week alone.

But the success was only enough to essentially keep pace with market-leading Nintendo, and its not all that speculative to conclude that if the game had not been released, Xbox 360's slide would have been much steeper.

It should be added however that much of the hardware buying activity due to Halo happened in the quarter before: it doubled its year previous numbers there, selling some 1.8 million consoles in the July-September period.

Not all is necessarily bad in Xbox land, however. For the second quarter in a row, the division posted $357 million in profits, beating the quarter previous totals of $165 million. This continues the reversal of a trend where the gaming division had been losing money for over a half-decade.

I'll use an xbox 360 when--just like an ipod-- I win one in a contest, or I'm given one through a gift.

Wow talk about not understanding the news and doing little to NO RESEARCH!!!

First of all reports from lots of retailers across the US have said that they dried up on Premium and Elite packages(aka shortages on both those fronts) and only had Halo edition and Arcade SKUs. Although some went as far as to say they were totally sold out.

SECONDLY and MOST IMPORTANT. It is a known fact that Microsoft Stuffed the retail channels last year to meet the 10million projections they had, and had quiet a few retailers mad about that. So this year they went more conservative and held back on supplying that insane amount they did last year. What apparently they did not predict was that there would actually be a shortage of the Premiums and Elites during Christmas, had Microsoft supplied enough of these they might have outsold Nintendo during the month of December.

Good job they stuck that $1.1billion aside last quarter, as it means this quarter, the slate wipes clean, and to idiots and shareholders, it looks like the Xbox division made $600,000.

Well... Its kinda hard for sales of a console to be the same every year IF EVERYONE ALREADY HAS THE CONSOLE ... seriously, people expect customers to buy the xbox 360 twice or something?

You don't have to buy a 360 over again when it fails like the PS3. Microsoft will repair it for free.

You seriously need to go back to math class... :)

Also, I've noticed that you consistently inflate the number of PS3 consoles sold by 1-2 million, while shaving off 4-5 million on the total 360 consoles sold.

That's what they'd have to do if it were part of the PS set... How many PS2s did most people who actually used them need to buy to replace their dead ones that Sony wouldn't fix under warranty?

Yea I'm going to go right out and snatch up a gaming console that has a high failure rate and doesn't really come with anything that appeals to me. A headset? What am I going to do with a headset? I don't play Live, so why should I have an accessory shoved down my throat that I don't want? And what's up with the Halo 3 edition that is all Halo themed, but doesn't even come with the game. Microsoft screwed the Xbox over just like they did Windows with Vista and MSN with Live. Good job.

The Xbox has more good games on it than the PS3. I could count the games I'd buy on the PS3 on one hand, then it would be a dead weight. Plus Sony had problems with the PS3 as well and like the person above said they had problems with the PS2. What ever Sony touches...that isn't a TV set or monitor...turns to s***. I wouldn't buy their audio equipment, a blu-ray player with their name on it or a PS3 (I never had a PS2 or 1). Actually I don't have anything thats Sony and unless their business model changes from "who gives a "f" about the customers and lets just sell crap" to giving a damn about quality I won't buy anything Sony. Their the only Japanese company I know that acts like an American company. A company should have pride in what they make and show that pride to their customers by making good products and treating their customers right, not just bring crap out and rake in the bucks.

Everyone knew Halo 3's impact would only last a month or two at best. That was October for cyting ut loud.

Holiday sales weren't pushed by Halo anymore, when fall / winter rolls around people start getting nostalgic about football here in the states and buy consoles for games Like Madden 200X.

Any company should know you need a great exclusive released at mid to late November to drive people on the fence into purchasing a console.

Sony tried this with a poorly timed and beautiful disaster called Lair, the graphics were stunning but it handled about as well as a 1976 AMC Ambassador and was less fun.

I am still waiting for the PS3 exclusive that makes me go out and buy a game instead of using my PS3 as a temporary, substandard Blu Ray player.

I don't like FPS's as I have played Halo for about a half hour before I decided I hated it because it's just not my type of game.

I'm not into RPG's either so the PS3 would have to come out with the best, fast paced racing game of all time to earn my respect. I've always like the Wip3out series but it's too slow. There was a game called Extreme G racing III (XGIII) for the PS2 that was incredible but there were only a handful of tracks that you got sick of after a while.

Oh and one last thing for all you Sony loving Wii haters:

Wii Tie Ratio at 8:1 in December
Players bought eight games for every Wii sold in December. That number is better than Xbox 360 and PS3.
by Matt Casamassina
January 24, 2008 - If you're still under the impression that consumers are only buying Nintendo's new console for Wii Sports, perhaps the latest software to hardware tie ratio numbers from the NPD Group will change your mind. According to the software data tracking service, consumers purchased 8.11 games for every Wii console sold in December. This relates to 7.76 games for every Xbox 360 sold during the month and 5.04 games for every PlayStation 3 purchased in the same time frame.

Very strong sales of titles like Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Play, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Guitar Hero III and more contributed to Wii's high tie ratio.

______________

So much for everyone putting their Wii's away after playing only the game that comes with the system (Wii Sports).

I'm almost at the December average of 8 games with 7 purchased, 3 before Christmas, and four more right after. I dont include WiiPlay as a game purchase.

LOL, nothing substandard about it. It's up there with the best, having considerably shorter load times, infinately more future-proof, and basically only missing a DTS-MA firmware update.

As for PS3 exclusives worth buying, take your pick:

Ratchet and Clank
Unchartered Drakes Fortune
Unreal Tournement 3
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
Warhawk
Wipeout HD
Resistance
Motorstorm

Further out, you have MGS4, Haze, Killzone 2 and a stack more...

Ratchet and Clank~ Not my type of game
Unchartered Drakes Fortune~ Gears of War is better
Unreal Tournement 3~ Coming out on XBox 360
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue~ I'm not paying for a demo
Warhawk~ Never liked those kind of games
Wipeout HD~ I prefer Fzero
Resistance~ Halo, Call of Duty, etc.
Motorstorm~ Forza2, PGR4, Burnout, etc.

Very MEH to me, especially compared to PS2's second christmas: Grand Theft Auto 3, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2 (well, for the MGS name anyway). Now that was bad ass.

umm...

R&C ~ opinions are like, well you get the point...great game regardless of if its your style...

Uncharted ~ GeOW ain't got NOTHING on Uncharted...visually this ain't even a contest..plus its an ENTIRELY different genre...

Unreal Tournament 3 ~ Show me an Xbox360 confirmed release date and we can talk...until MS allows for user created content Epic ain't porting this baby over...

GT5:P ~ This "demo" is better than any racing game on the market...

Warhawk ~ again opinions...for what it is its a great game...

Wipeout HD ~ when is Fzero HD coming out? hmm...

R:FOM ~ Halo is yesterday's news...CoD4 is multiplat...Resistance 2 Anyone??

Motorstorm ~ totally different genre than Forza of PGR4...they compare to GT5:P and FAIL at it...

That would ve a valid comparison of christmas lineups except none of those games are 1st party, so Sony has no control over when they are ready...DMC4 is knocking on the door...as well as GTA4 and MGS4...

The funny thing about PS3 is there is plenty I would play if I owned it, but the games that will make me buy it are still on way (particularly GT5, MGS4, and maybe Little Big Planet). The price will probably be down more once those come out anyway.

I think Sony just did things a bit backwards with their software strategy. New franchises like Resistance and Uncharted were never going to sell expensive hardware because the average consumer didn't know what they were until they saw something running on a demo kiosk. It would have been much easier to move hardware with the big name titles and they try to introduce new IPs once the audience was there.

Maybe PS2's continued success is dampening PS3... if games like God of War II or Final Fantasy XII were PS3 games I would have bought one at launch. Either way the games they need to have out are coming, but they really could have used them sooner.

fable 2, gears of war 2 and grand theft auto IV will keep the sales high. lets not forget call of duty 4, it is doing quite well for the 360 as well. I am sure it will be at least one price between June and August. Third party companies will continue to develope for the 360 because it is the most profitable between the 3 consoles. The 360 version is the highest priority because of the high attach rate.

Another good thing about the xbox and xbox 360 is MS made it easy for companies to write games for it. The PS2 and PS3 are so much harder to write for but MS knew to make things simple for the developers.

For the system to have the software lineup it did (Halo 3, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4 and BioShock are all brilliant) and not sell more seems to indicate that either the red ring of death is scaring people away or the price going down only $50 ($20 on the lower end sku) after two years was not enough.

That or the Halo audience wasn't just buying the system the quarter before, but all along as games like Gears of War were released. The good news for them is that they actually get a chance in a few months to really move hardware: get the premium unit down to $299.99 when Grand Theft Auto IV is released.

360 is still the place third parties are going to go for their software sales and the division making money seems to indicate the brand wont be going anywhere, but the red ring seems to have done a number on the hardware sales. I don't know how accurate some of the recent information is, but if it is a problem that really was self inflicted by launching the system too soon, than they have nobody to blame but themselves on that issue.
