Happy Holidays 2005 from BetaNews

By Nate Mook | Published December 25, 2005, 2:10 AM

And so draws near a close to yet another year. As we say goodbye to 2005, we at BetaNews would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for all of the support we have received from our software authors, downloaders and devoted readers. This has been a momentous year for BetaNews, including the addition of new faces to the team, and it wouldn't have happened without you.

While the outside hasn't changed much, beneath the hood we've been making some big modifications to BetaNews and have much in store as the new year gets underway. We also plan to expand our staff in order to bring you even more news about the software and technology that interests you. In January we'll kick off our live coverage of CES 2006 in Las Vegas.

2005 was a huge year for technology, from Apple shocking the world with its Intel switch to Live 8 to Microsoft launching the Xbox 360. Windows Vista got its name and finally hit Beta 1, while Office 12 made a first appearance. Security came into the spotlight and Sony tarnished its name despite leading the battle against HD DVD with Blu-ray.

But while 2005 was surely the year of search as Microsoft and Google butted heads on numerous occasions, 2006 is shaping up to be "the year of the Web." Google continued to dominate this year, but will be forced to work harder against its rivals by broadening its portfolio of services.

Yahoo will likely expand its arsenal of Flickr and del.icio.us with more Web 2.0 companies, while Microsoft rolls out Windows Live and Office Live. A conference in March will help Redmond as it endeavors to solidify its standing among this new breed of developer. AOL, meanwhile, will take its $1 billion from Google and continue its march away from dial-up toward free Web services.

In what has become a tradition here at BetaNews, we wish all of you a safe and happy holidays as you celebrate with family and friends. Although we are on an abbreviated schedule, be sure to check for new beta releases or jot a quick greeting to the staff.

Probably the most incisive and informative site about computing on the Internet. I know, since I have made so many enemies. I hope you continue to provide us with informative information in 2006. Best wishes and thank-you.

Good. Maybe next year you won't be such pricks about downgrading posts with a different viewpoint.

And ~start~ to downgrade posts with no viewpoint at all posted by silly teenagers writing nonsensical gibberish !

I suppose you could also stop putting dots and extraneous space in your post, but I guess we can't get everything we want for Christmas. We'll just have to improve our filters.

This is probably the first site I visit every day, and I come here at least 5-10 times, just to make sure I didn't miss something. I love coming here, reading the articles, reviewing the software, etc. etc. Keep up the awesome work!

I want to thank the folks at BetaNews for having perhaps the finest all-around forum online for instant software gratification and comparison. BN's reporting needs more critical journalism and less cheerleading in 2006, but like many others, BetaNews is a must-stop every day for me.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to everyone, especially the staff of BetaNews. Another great year! I hope everybody got what they wanted for Christmas.

Merry x-mas everyone!

The only feature which would be a nice addition I think, would be if people can place comments on software but not leave a rating. Maybe a "not rated" entry or the likes. Sometimes I like to make comments before using the software and such, and it wouldn't be fair to give it points without testing it.

Can we expect a 1-10 rating system in the New Year at all instead of the current 1-5 rating? I did e-mail you Wed, 2 Mar 2005 about this afterall. ;)

ORRRR....So as not to disrupt continuitiy, we can stay w/ the present & just add ½ & ¼ point increments-- w/ maybe even a critique guide + what the different levels should stand for...

That would only add more prestige, value & credibility to BetaNews..

And yes-- i also requested this many moons ago-- please don't be a Grinch!
