Lenovo Recalls 560,000 Sony Batteries

By Ed Oswald | Published September 28, 2006, 2:51 PM

In conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, both IBM and Lenovo announced that they were calling for the voluntary recall of approximately 526,000 laptop batteries manufactured by Sony. Lenovo had announced earlier this week that it was investigating reports of issues with laptops containing batteries from the manufacturer.

The two companies become the fourth and fifth computer makers behind Toshiba, Apple, and Dell to recall Sony batteries due to overheating problems. Altogether, nearly 6.8 million laptops have been affected, although in fairness Toshiba's recall of 340,000 had to do more with a defect in the laptop manufacturing itself.

Lenovo acknowledged over the weekend that it was investigating an incident in which an IBM ThinkPad T43 laptop overheated and caught fire at Los Angeles International Airport. Nobody was hurt, but officials have begun expressing concern about the safety of laptops on airplanes.

At the time, the company would not say whether it was considering a recall, however Thursday's announcement confirmed that the recall was sparked by that incident.

The issues affect the following models: in the T Series, the T43, T43p, and T60; in the X Series, the X60 and X60s; and in the R Series, the R51e, R52, R60, and R60e. The recall affects laptops sold, as well as replacement batteries ordered, during the period of February 2005 to September 2006.

i don't get this whole company worshiping/hating like they are some sort of sports team. If they make 1 thing out of 10000000 that you like who cares about everything else. You can go buy something else from another company. sony made an arlam clock i liked so yay sony, cowon made a nice mp3 player so yay cowon, etc. company loyalty is a delusion.

Well this is off topic but have you not read about the sheer number of recalls for Toyota/Lexus products lately? Some are minor, some are major including faulty transmissions and engine fires.

Back to geek speak now....

More good news for sony.

I bet they thought after the rootkit fiasco things could only get better.

Then came the BluRay problems, then the Ps3 delays and shipping problems and limmited stock on sale before Xmas. The signs of betamax, minidisk, memory stick and PSP disk woes came flooding back.

The time for things getting better looked just around the corner, candles are lit, prayers are made and virgin sacrifices are in the pipeline and .... Exploding batteries, massive recalls and the name of Sony looking about as good as $hit sandwich topped off with an evening with PC Tw@t ....

Dont you just love it :P

I love reading the posts from scared Xbox360 owners, who fear their console obsolete overnight, and feel the need to bring up 30 year old technologies like BetaMax, and other crap.

You obviously, are not an expert, as you make several mistakes.

1/ It's Minidisc
2/ Betamax was actually sucessful for Sony, in it's BetaCam broadcasting format.
3/ Memorystick is also actually sucussful, whilst it's only used in Sony products, why does it matter, infact it's write speed is fster than all the other flash formats on the market.
4/ PSP Disc Woes???? (I assume you mean UMD Movies).

I love reading the posts from scared Sony fanboys, who fear their console will be obsolete overnight, and feel the need to bring up 30 year old technologies like BetaMax, and other crap.

I feel I must correct some fanboy errors.

1/ It's Minidisc

LOL ... is that it, I made that post before I drove home and shock horror made a spelling mistake. At least im not ANAL enough to spellcheck it and feel the NEED to edit my post like SOME people do. If I had to use bad spelling to rubbish a post instead of using facts then that proves you either taking crap or truely are a fan boy.

2/ Betamax was actually sucessful for Sony, in it's BetaCam broadcasting format.

Yea .. im sure Sony regard Betamax as a complete success, and is currently on proud display in teh hall of fame .... NOT.

3/ Memorystick is also actually sucussful, whilst it's only used in Sony products, why does it matter, infact it's write speed is fster than all the other flash formats on the market.

Oh no ... you made a spelling mistake, cant give you that one ... "sucussful" indeed ... you using a sony spellcheck ?

4/ PSP Disc Woes???? (I assume you mean UMD Movies).

Well done ... hit the nail on the head. So where is the mistake ? Was it ... or is it a raging success, flying off the shelves in millions are they ?

You obviously, are not an expert, as you make several mistakes.

LOL .. i made a some spelling mistakes, big deal .. I hardly think that means you have the justification in assuming I am an expert and then basically correcting as I see it just one of the points I raised and then proclaiming it as you did.

I rest my case fanboy.
