Longhorn Gets a Name: Windows Vista

By Ed Oswald and Nate Mook, BetaNews

Windows VistaThe folks at Redmond have long pointed to the user interface of the next generation Windows release as one of its major selling points. Now, Microsoft has chosen an official name for Longhorn with just that in mind. Enter: Windows Vista.

Word of the new name leaked out late Thursday after Microsoft tipped off journalists and enthusiast sites of an impending Longhorn-related announcement due Friday morning. "Windows Vista" was first mentioned at a Microsoft sales conference in Atlanta, according to reports.

A video has been made available to showcase the Windows Vista news.

Microsoft has also registered domains to go along with the newly christened Windows, including windowsvista.com. The domains were registered in late March, indicating the company made the decision even before WinHEC gave developers their first taste of Longhorn in over a year.

Windows Vista was initially reported by enthusiast site ActiveWin.

The word 'vista' defined means "pleasing view." According to a source, the name had been first floated about six months ago, although not much more had been said in the following months.

Sources tell BetaNews Microsoft is also rallying the troops -- MVPs and close partners -- to gear up for the Beta 1 release.

Longhorn, or Windows Vista, Beta 1 will be available by August 3, Microsoft said Friday. Beta 2 is expected in early 2006, with the final next generation Windows release expected by the end of next year.

Small town boy reboots Microsoft

GC Shekhar

Chennai, August 6, 2006

He'd wanted to be the next Dhanraj Pillai, but the vista that destiny opened up for A Mahesh led to greener pastures in the world of technology.
The 24-year-old from small town Tamil Nadu has created a software that will add considerable muscle to Vista, Microsoft's brand new operating system due for launch next year.
In all probability, Vista will incorporate Mahesh's creation, which is an image browser, image editor, web browser, system tools and disk manager rolled into one.
In fact, Microsoft has already validated and awarded the product BETA2 iBRO.NET a patent protection certificate.
This means anyone may make use of Mahesh's product using the validation key but would need to pay Microsoft a royalty a part of which would reach this shy lad from Palayamkottai in southern Tamil Nadu.
The first member of his family to reach the post-graduate level, Mahesh developed the BETA2 iBRO.NET as the fifth-year project for his integrated M Sc course in computer science. He chose Vista's developer platform, where individuals are invited to contribute features for Vista.
"For sheer conceptualisation and acumen, his creation shows enormous scope and maturity. It's a full fledged tool that would not only remove deficiencies in Vista but add never-seen features in the OS," explained Dr Krishnan, professor of computer science at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, who helped fine tune Mahesh's creation.
For example, why a computer hangs remains a mystery to most. But Mahesh's product can display the reasons. It can also optimise the download speed of a broadband connection when needed.
Unlike other OS, it can also display properties of all the drives in the computer simultaneously. "Before Vista is launched, I plan to add more features to make my product more comprehensive," said Mahesh, whose father is a retired peon.
"Such a product would take a team of at least 10 people in a top IT company months to develop. But for a student from a rural background to do all this in just 5 months on his own is amazing," observed N Chokkan, a columnist on computer.
Mahesh, who will soon join IBM at Bangalore, is unfazed by the recognition and remains grateful to his parents and R Panneerselvam, chairman of his school who waived his fees for the five-year course.

If names really mattered then i feel sorry for ppl called d***. If you're a mac user - stick to ur 'all-so-perfect' system. windows users are doing fine with all the viruses, infections, spyware and adware issues. And there's nothing wrong with copying from others......if there was, most of you guys wouldn't have made it out of high school anyways. If you're a windows user - stick to it and crave for vista, on the other hand, if you're a mac user - stick to yours!

Well I have to say that i use mac computers at school all day, and i come home to use a pc at night. When at school i im usually running photoshop, illustrator and indesign all at once. Photoshop gives me an error message every time i save, illustrator crashes occasionally, and indesign files become corrupted occasionally. and occasionally i have had the programs "unexpectedly quit" WHILE DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Other thatn these minor setbecks that i get on a daily basis using the mac platform, i would say they are great, except for the fact that i also do architectural drawings using autocad 2006, which is not available for a mac, so i go pc for that. When it comes to using photoshop illustrator and indesign on my pc, i have to say, that when i click the icon to open, i dont even get a splash screen that pops up, it is just open. And this is a a pc with a 3.4 ghz processor and 8 gigs of ram. I work on powermac g5's a school, and i still see the splash screen when i open, along with delays in adding filters, and 3d effects.

Windoze has a lot going for it, but mostly that it already has market share. Parvas24 is correct in saying that Windoze had better be careful, because Linux and Mac OS (both FREE to develop on) are fierce competition. I find it amusing that all people can do is insult the name of an OS that isn't even out, and I doubt most of these people have a subscription to MSDN. So what's the point in insulting an OS that hasn't even hit the shelves?

All I hear is tripe like "Oh, Microsoft is an evil corporate Nazi that STEALS!"

The Matrix stole from Kung-Fu! Oh no! The foundation of the action in the entire series! The Wachowski brothers must be punished for stealing!

Or...

Half-Life and Half-Life 2? A first-person shooter involving alien-like creatures!? That must be a rip-off of Doom! And Heaven forbid a targeting reticle is used! That would be even more stealing!

I wonder if people are seeing just how retarded the Mac and Linux users are being with that "feature theft" argument.

What I have noticed, though, is the Mac and Linux users tend to be quite a bit more immature with their argument presentation and their overall disposition. That tells me something right there.

I'd be so bold as to claim Mac OSX is a coloring book to amuse the visual, and Linux is an OS to make people think of themselves as elite "hackers."

Not all, of course, but that's what I'm seeing the most.

Good job. You sure did pin Microsoft in the corner with bad grammar and overused insults which were applied to an OS that isn't even out for the public (again; I doubt most of these people have an MSDN subscription, let alone a computer these anti-Windows advocates would put the OS on to give it that shot).

You see things through rose colored glasses, unbr0k3n. Windoze is not the wonderful OS you make it out to be. If you haven't recently used a Mac, then don't go on and on about how crappy the OS is, and don't turn the argument into a personal attack against all Linux and Mac OS users/developers. I use Mac AND Windoze, and I can see clearly which is the superior system. You are an elitist Windoze user (because you've probably known nothing else), which tells me that no matter what comes out from any other OS, you will always be a Windoze user. Good luck with that. By the way, most people don't have a MSDN subscription because it isn't worth it.

For unbr0k3n ... Oh Yeah ... Windows Vista cracked copies are avaliable on the internet ... got it from those who develop it .... not as effective as Windows XP .... if you try it you will know ..... Microsoft developers for Windows Vista now are postponing the release of Windows Vista or Longhorn to next year end .... the core of the operating system is only 75% stable as compared to Windows XP .... needless to stay one should stick to Windows XP updates if you use Windows .... untill a newer version of Windows Vista is avaliable .

As far as Linux and Mac OS X Tiger are concerned ... Mac OS X is definately superior .... cool to use .... great support form Apple ... is getting better everyday ..... Linux OSMandriva needs further improvements .... already preloaded on many new computers in ASIA these days on Desktops and Laptops ... It is time the world embraces change and all computer users are exposed to different Operating systems so that they choose what they want to use ... sadly most computer users are exposed only to Windows OS ... no fault of theirs ... On most of your points, you're wrong, King_Rapist. Nice name, by the way - it shows your intelligence and sensitivity, but mostly your intelligence. Heh. As far as development goes, most of the major media outlets use Macs for their enterprise applications, and for a lot of Java development. This is because they don't want to throw money down the drain with windoze apps anymore. None of that ASP sh**. Many windoze users don't know it, but many of the web applications that companies pay to have developed, including those running e-mail, forms, database, and other various java applications, were done solely on Macs. windoze is far from top of the line, as can be seen in the many security exploits and several "blue screen of death" incidents that users have. It's so sad to see so many ignorant people who just have no clue about what they're missing, and yet who feel that they are superior enough to rant about something they know nothing about.

As soon as Mac offers anything whatsoever to the developer's community I'll consider comments like your's actually grounded in intelligence. A pretty interface is about the only thing that Mac OS has going for it and I'd just as soon not waste my processor power on such frivilous, superficial crap. That seems to be the motto at Apple though: Form Over Function. They seem content to just bombard people with advertisements for shiny little computers that can't do anything. But, I'm sure you're right, I'm sure Microsoft is deeply concerned about Apple's approximate 2% marketshare. Concerned enough, in fact, to outrightly rip off the entire Mac OS.

Lest we forget that, while the original Windows OS was a rip off of the original Mac OS, the original Mac OS was a rip off too. It's a business of thieves, so you'd better get used to it.

Quote Parvas24 "Most of the world's top institutes like NASA depend on Mac OS X . Though Mac OS X has a small share currently in todays market ..."

They use it because of the fact it's got so little of the market. They know that script kiddies and the like are having too much fun with trying to screw up a company with 90+% of the market.

"the system is excellent ... it is like a BMW among cars ... while Windows is just about any regular cars like Honda / Ford ..."

Tell that to the people who get the crashes from hell. OSX has its share of issues, ignorance of them doesn't make it all that and a bag of chips.

"Mac OS X definately is a superior operating system .. unlike Windows XP or the forthcoming Vista which is cheap OS with copied stuff .. late in the game .."

Copied stuff, oh, you mean like how Apple copied stuff? Or insert name of software company here ______, what planet you from? Guess how Apple got its original GUI, sheeesh.

"able to load on any PC is a poor excuse for making an Operating system ..."

You sure about that? Seems like that's one reason why they have over 90% market share. It may also be a reason why so many people attack it.....

"let Microsoft make thier own Hardware and computers to load their Windows on then we shall see the difference ..."

Oh yeah, thats telling them! You have a truck parked in the front yard and a Kerry sticker on the bumper?

"Linux Mandriva is excellent for that matter .. is a freeware and loads on any regular PC is very good"

It took over 10 YEARS to load on what you call a regular PC, Linux still isn't ready for prime time average Joe.

"and Linux OS seems to be the Operating systems of the future ...."

Linus would be proud, now that you've said it, do you know why you said it, what do you have to back that up besides empty air.

"Windows just have to be erased ... The only good thing about Microsoft is that the MS office ...."

Ignorance of History and your commentary shows you don't know much. There is room for Linux, OSX and Linux, fanboys aside there will be a day when Linux is ready for the average guy/girl and Apple has jumped over to X86 so it's only time before Windows has true competition and people can finally choose between OSX and Windows on a X86 based PC.

Look guy... All I have to agree with you, is that MAC makes some pretty descent computers... The new G5 with the dual 2.7 processors is a great idea, especailly when using Adobe apps. or doing anything in general with music, photos, movies, and any other type of media... But aside from that, Windows Server 2003 is far more superior operating system than OSX... I don't give a damn if you think NASA can only operate on a MAC... Being that I am a MSDN subscriber, a Beta tester, an IT Pro for Microsoft, I am aloud to say that... If Mac was so great, why doesn't everyone use it? And if the OS is so great, why can't you loud it on any type of computer? Hell, and if MAC computers are so great, why are they switching from the G5 processors to an Intel processor? If you take a MAC computer apart, the hardware isn't far from the Windows machines... Of course the new Windows Vista is going to be similar, do you think that Microsoft wants to make a difficult OS for all of the current windows users? Here's a question for people.

You want to make a virus to spread throughout the world and cause as much damage as possible. You going to go with Mac OS X, or the dominant operating system on the market?

So, upon keeping the question in mind, what would happen if Mac or Linux became the major player in the operating system "game?" People would soon be switching their reticles over to the new beasts in an attempt to take them down.

Linux is not impenitrable, and people who know how to use it tend to be far more vicious. So what could be projected if Linux won? Meaner, nastier virii. Why? Linux isn't an OS for the mediocre computer user.

I've had nothing but problems when on the Mac OS. Time and time again, I've had resource issues and it would crash far too often. I hated it. I tried on more than one occasion to give the Mac OS a chance, but each time, it fell face first into the pavement. Mac OS is worthless to me.

And to be honest, someone with a pulse can figure out how to safeguard their computer enough to almost eliminate the threat of a virus. I get one once in a while, sure. It doesn't last more than a day, however. Beyond that, I have no problems whatsoever with Microsoft's products, and I look forward to what Vista can bring to the table.

I like microsoft's Vista b/c it brings change. I think for a while it will be good and bad for MSFT. It may generate more money for them (b/c you and all of china won't be able to pirate it), but at the same time they will probably lose market share b/c too many people like to steal music, movies, and apps. But i think after all those PC's with their "pirated partitions" stop working b/c of virus' and as most applications start to become written in "Trusted" code, and stop running w/out being verified, people will eventually move to the "Trusted platform" and the days of file sharing will become a moderate underground hobbie. Unless those creating the files and applications like having thier information stolen, or they believe in an ideological internet socialist society, where their IP should be shared by all,(I think money will speak louder than progress), then people may someday still "file share". If you wonder what i'm talking about, you should take a harder look at the PC industry. With Vista i am talking about full-volume encryption, with all the apps and file types i'm talking about something bigger, and a little deeper.

It all starts in the pre-boot process. Once initialized in the factory, or by you the first time, your PC will create ownership and keys for all components of the PC, e.g. CPU, graphics, USB, Ram, ect. Then they will verify all apps associated with components. Creating more keys, or something like that. Anyway, if there is anychange to apps or components different things may happen, anywhere to notification to rendering useless. Also the file types running will be verified and either work or not work. Its more complicated but that is the breakdown.
Oh, there are a couple ways to beat it. One, don't conform to future applications or files (ha, you'll be like the caveman right when he got fire). Two, find a collision in SHA-1, (then you can hang out with those three chinese geeks) and write a program to utilize it. Three, get a clean room and the technology to intercept info packets being sent across the southbridge, you might have a chance then.

any questions do some research

NOW, about vista, the name needed further thought, but still hasn't impressed me all that much, XP is good enough for now, m$ is notorious for rushing products out before they have proper time to analyze the outcome, other then IE7, which i can get on any of my XP w/SP2 box's anyway, there is no need to rush into it.

I ONLY have a PC at home because they are cheap and goodm for games (But the XBox 360 will put an end to that). Mac's have had their crap together since day 1 and Microsoft has been playin cath up since day 1. Mac crash, yea sure but not half as much as PC's! And at least when a Mac crashes it tells you why, PCs crash and give you a blue screen with a description for IT pros. And talk about user friendly, Macs have been that way since they were born. PCs...finally have come around since XP, wow that's about 10 years in the waiting! The ONLY reason people went to PCs instead of Macs was MONEY. Apple knew they had a good reliable (Friendly) computer that would satisfy everyone, so they charged for it. Microsoft said look these are crap lets sell them for a dime a dozen and then get our money back for service calls (lmao). So don't talk (****) if you have no clue!

As I work is software designing it exposed me to various OS .... Mac OS X Tiger is extraordinary .... Windows XP is for is okay but I still feel that Microsoft can do better ... Windows Vista has many features like Pallidum security and 3D setup ..also spotlight finder features which Mac OS X Tiger already has .... Also the Internet explorer in Windows is poor ... not recomended by PC Mags .... a lot of worms like Windows ... Back in the days Windows 95 was good .. times change .. so do the perfrmance of Mac OS has improved tremendrously .. .. Mac OS X is user friendly ... Safari RSS browser is excellent with bulit in Google search ...Microsoft Windows Vista is coming up now with a similar feature on Internet explorer RSS due next year .... I browse any site now without fearing viruses ... also I download lots of music which makes the life easier on a Mac OS X . My Windows PC is still vulnerable to these worms .... Also I always keep and external harddrive to my Mac OS X ... helps me keep my stuff safer and eay to recover ... it has not crashed on me as yet ... but my Windows crashes often ... so I recomend Mac OS X Tiger over Windows .... Linux is a good alternative less problems on it and Mandriva Linux is a freeware and is COOL .... Another false statement about WHY Windoze computers get viruses. It isn't because most people use Windoze. It's because the people writing the viruses HATE Microsoft. It's a fact. MS keeps its code hidden from the world, and charges an arm and a leg to develop on its mediocre system. That's the incentive for these virus-creators. Not just because windoze is used by more people. That notion is ridiculous, and it shows that you probably haven't been using a computer for very long. Also, the only reason Windows Virus are of any threat is because of the multitudes of windows users out there who are either ignorant of pc security or won't learn. I mean if the security holes weren't there this wouldn't be a factor but the simple fact is that it is a factor because they do exist. So if some one ends up wit a virus, worm, trojan, adware or any variation of these it's their fault because they haven't properly prepared themselves to deal with the threat.

Wow, they were really creative with the name there... I cant believe they wasted millions looking for a name that crappy when they could be using it to create a better system. Anyways i believe, sure microsoft has a better user interface, but it is still a much more ineficient system. Linux, or Mac , are much better systems with quite good user interfaces and theyre much better at processing. So im sticking with Linux. Because Microsoft is only good at selling systems made for dummies, theyre easy to use thats the only good part. But for any coputing they really just are plain slow. Also the system is very insecure. 99.9 percent of the viriuses and spyware out there are for windows. Do you ever see any for mac or linux? No, you hardly ever see any for them. And its not because windows is the most common, because linux is used for servers which would hold a lot more valuable information than a home computer so why not break into that instead? well its simple.. its because u cant!! linux and mac are such secure systems that it is much harder to exploit security faults because there arent any.,
so i say forget microsoft, im going for performance and security.. but hey dont let my opinion change yours, just do some research and choose for yourself.. LATER!!!
