RSSMS: IE7 Flaw Really in Outlook Express

Microsoft responded Thursday to reports of the first exploit affecting Internet Explorer 7, which cropped up less than 24 hours after the browser's official launch. Christopher Budd from Microsoft's Security Response Center says the flaw lies not in IE7, but in an Outlook Express component.
This fact could explain why the problem first surfaced back in November 2003 and was found to affect IE6 last April. "While these reports use Internet Explorer as a vector the vulnerability itself is in Outlook Express," Budd said. Microsoft notes it has received no reports of any attacks against customers, but is investigating the situation and may release a patch if necessary.

I used to think that, too--but lately, I'm starting to think that third partys are PURPOSELY waiting until after RTM to actually releasing updates. HP, for example, has long known of the IE7 - HP Director incompatibility, but they haven't made any patches yet. Release Candidates are made for that sort of thing--so third-party mfrs. can fix up their little bugs with updated OS software before the final release. IE7 RTM is/will have about the same reaction that XP SP2 had at RTM...most people will quickly install it, it'll work fine, and we won't hear from them, while the big-mouths talk about how much it has ruined their life, while the only thing that ruined their life is the sasser virus that was "updated" with IE7 and hence prevents windows from booting up :)

|Well this explains why the proof-of-concept didn't work in Vista... Vista ditched Outlook Express and introduced "Windows Mail" (well ok it's just a new name... but that's probably enough to break everything, vulnerabilities included :P).

|My God, there is STILL confusion over Windows Mail (the OE replacement in Vista) versus Windows Live Desktop Mail (the desktop version of Windows Live Mail, which is the Hotmail upgrade)... This is why Microsoft's branding department needs to go back to school to learn how to name products.

|I agree that Microsoft's branding is lousy, but you are mistaken about the facts. First of all, it is Windows Live Mail Desktop (not Windows Live Desktop Mail).
Second, I've actually been running the beta releases of it. It is only a "Hotmail upgrade" to the extent that Hotmail is ONE of THREE account types it supports (POP3 and IMAP being the others). Today, Outlook Express already supports the same three types of accounts, but all three are gaining various improvements in WLMD. For example, you can finally map the common folders (Drafts, Sent, etc.) in IMAP, making the IMAP support more friendly to non-Microsoft IMAP servers.
You were probably confused because the earliest beta releases of WLMD were limited to testers who had qualifying Hotmail/MSN accounts (qualifying meaning that it was purely Hotmail/MSN and not tied to an ISP account from an MSN partner like Verizon). Microsoft just didn't want to deal with a bunch of testers screaming that the Hotmail support wasn't finished at that point (which they already knew).
WLMD on XP/2003 is very comparable to Windows Mail in Vista. The only real differences are: (1) WLMD will be ad-supported and display a large vertical banner. (2) On Vista, Windows Mail integrates tightly with various features in Vista like the Search. Although WLMD on XP/2003 does have search capability, it doesn't work as nicely.
Installing WLMD on XP/2003 will replace OE. The core EXE and DLL files in WLMD are the same as in OE.

|Another thing to add about Windows Mail in Vista (the successor to OE), it no longer supports HTTP mail accounts such as Hotmail. Although, WLMD on XP/2003 does support HTTP mail accounts.
