Microsoft, Dell Team on Special Vista PC
By the Betanews Staff | Published November 21, 2006, 4:47 PM
Microsoft recently partnered with Dell to create a special edition PC to commemorate the launch of Windows Vista. Only a few of the computers have been produced, and there are no plans to sell it, the company says. Among the specifications are a Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX graphics card, 4GB of SDRAM, 1TB of hard drive space, a DVD+/-RW DL disc drive, dual television tuners, a 30" widescreen monitor, and surround sound capabilities.
The PC has a rating of 5.2 on Vista's Windows Experience Index. One of the PCs was raffled off at Microsoft's internal launch party, with another going to charity. The number of PCs produced, or the plans for the other machines was not announced.

The case is hideous to say the least.

|there are some corrections in the page that comes with this link "special edition PC".there in the specifications,it is given Hard Drive capacity is 1TB and just next to it,it is given as (2x500MB).1TB=1024GB and not 1024MB.before uploading the pages, check the page twice.

My 2 year old home built rates a 5.7 on Vista's Windows Experience Index.
This PC doesn't look bad, but it's performance seems questionable.

|Let's look at the big picture 1 first Microsoft drops a new OS system 2 He comes up with new anti-piracy mechanisms 3 partnered with Dell byebye home made computers all of this from a man who once said the internet was a passing phase.I hope bill gates fall off the face of this earth and dell back out of this before thay fall with them there's been a lot of talk about vista on the net about what it can do and can not do heres what I hope to see hackers hack the s*** out of vista there's a version of vista on torrents sites already ummm bill gates seem to me you need to put your security some where else.

|SDRAM ?
Didn't realise DDR2 had gone up in price so much that dell are reverting back to PC133
Score: 0
|SDRAM is Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory. DDR SDRAM is Double Data Rate SDRAM. DDR2 is second-generation DDR SDRAM. As you can see, SDRAM is a fairly generic term. A little outdated perhaps, but by no means incorrect.

|i was actually aware of that already, i was taking a dig at "betanews staff" for not reporting that it was DDR2 @ 667mhz

|Umm, it has a Dell mobo, not a real one.

|True, and who knows what other "non-standard" parts? USB ports, power supplies? No thanks, I want something I can buy replacement parts for without having to call Bangalore.
Score: 0
|nothing wrong with a dell mobo, unless you want to oc, then there is a problem
Score: 0
|As I understand it Dell doesn't use many non-standard parts anymore. Last I heard they were using standard power supply units now. Well at least you don't have to worry about the board getting fried by installing an off the shelf power supply.
Disclaimer: I take no liability for the information above. If the information was inaccurate in any way then it is your fault for using it. Confirm it with Dell before replacing a part yourself in a Dell PC.

|Everything in a dell is standard. Seagate hard drives, Foxconn motherboards, Samsung or HL optical drives. The only thing Dell is the chassis.

|still cant replace the system fan in a dell without having to tell the bios that your aware it doesnt have the dodgy dell genuine fan in it every time you boot tho.
