Microsoft Downgrades Longhorn

To head off what some have described as a "perfect storm" Microsoft is paring down its next generation Windows release code-named Longhorn. Business Week is reporting that Microsoft will fall short of its aspirations to include the full scope of the Windows file-storage system (WinFS) in the operating system; instead, the software giant will focus on rolling out WinFS for the client - leaving network support to the dust.

The WinFS system along with the Indigo communications subsystem and Avalon graphical subsystem serve as the three technologies at the foundation of Longhorn.

According to Microsoft Watch, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates publicly acknowledged that the Longhorn client will be pushed back well into 2006.

To fill the void left by the absence of Longhorn, Microsoft was expected to release an interim release of XP rumored to be called Windows XP "Reloaded". However, according to emails allegedly viewed by Business Week, those plans have been shelved indefinitely.

Instead Microsoft will deliver Windows XP Premium: a conglomeration of Windows XP Service Pack Two and Windows Media Player 10.

Windows Media Player 10 is Microsoft's attempt to outflank Apple by offering the MSN Music Store, and is set to include new digital rights management technology dubbed "Janus". Windows XP Premium will not be billed as an 'interim' release.

With Windows Longhorn, Microsoft has promised big. This, however, is not the first time Redmond has attempted a proverbial 'moon shot'.

Senior Jupiter analyst Joe Wilcox told BetaNews, "Microsoft's situation is like it was 10 years ago. It's interesting to see history repeat. The company had promised big things with Cairo, but executives faced increasing pressure to ship a new version of Windows. Microsoft also worried new competing products, such as IBM's OS/2 Warp, would eat away Windows market share. Funny how the characters are changed, but not the situation."

Jupiter's Wilcox continued, "Ten years ago, Microsoft shed features to get out Windows 95, which wasn't as revolutionary as the version 3.1 successor was supposed to be. Shedding features could put Longhorn on a similar track."

Linux's growing momentum and the continual delay of Longhorn is brewing what some have called a perfect storm. "Many Longhorn promised features are like those proposed for Cairo, Microsoft faces some pressure to ship and Linux could be the OS/2 of the day," said Wilcox.

I think it just a marketting game.
actually what is planned as Xp reloaded is same/almost no different as the one which is delivered for premium.
it just microsoft way to make more money.
But what I want to get is better performance too, as XP SP2 is not better performance compared to XP.

What I also want to see is windows XP for Developer.
so developer can develop better software, with good performance, etc. they did not need many other things which normal user wants, but they need best environment for producing good software.

little bit relating to this is, Microsoft did not release service pack for Visual studio .net 2002 and 2003. meanwhile they just releasing sp6 for VB6. and they delay the Visual studio 2005. it is not good for visual studio (VB, VC) developer. Microsoft must release SP for Visual studio .net 2002 and 2003, so developer can produce better software.

I agree. It would be nice to have compilers and a GOOD terminal window like the users of unix enjoy.

The command prompt Windows has is garbage...

will we have to pay for this "windows xp premium", which supposidly is just sp2 and WiMP 10? because i would rather just download them seperatly than buy it in a package for 100 bucks.

No...SP2 and MC10 will be available for download. XP Premium is what you would buy if you don't currently own Windows XP.

Hahaha. As far as I know, M$ never did a complete rewrite of a product. They keep using the old crap code until they buy another product and then, start bloating it. It happenned with the whole windows "family", with their fat-office suit, and better don't talk about programming (anyone remember the god old FOX database system?)
M(g)arketing is another story, every windows release will be the "most advanced", feature rich, redesigned, rewriten, refaked OS in the world...
But I forgot.. M$ DO make innovations... They produced the first spyware operating system in the world: Windows XP. Ah, bad boys...
I hope and think that linux will not become the next OS/2 because linux is not a product from a giant, lazy and weak minded corporation (IBM).

Longhorn will be based on XP.

As time has gone on, more and more of the original NT3 code has been rewritten (2k reports state that it only inherited about 40% of NT4's code), so eventually it will be a rewrite..

There is no real need to Rewrite, as XP is modern and stable, and it a good foundation for further OS developments..

Windows XP Stable? HA HA HA. Xp when compared to 2000 Pro is pretty unstable. I won't even consider going back to XP. Hopefully they make "Longhorn" more based off 2000, yet a better OS than 2003 is.

yes... Microsoft is a business... and they do make quality products for the standard user... I use linux and windows xp currently.. I am going into my 4th year in software engineering microsoft is great for my entertainment and relaxation... Linux is great for my software development... all the super linux advocates never want to see the big picture... sure microsoft wants to make money.. but they do a good job at it... now think... do you want your grandparents using windows xp or linux (no matter what nice and easy distro you use)!!?? the average user will be able to use the well developed windows far easier...

microsoft may not have rewritten all their code... but it is a constant migration towards improvement... do you think all the UNIX code out there was not developed in stages?..(yet there tones of flavors of UNIX out there...linux is a rewrite I guess)....

bah.. I dont know if I will ever see a day when people even the balance..

Microsoft does unfair business. They did, they do and maybe they will continue doing dirty business.
They have really brillant marketting and better lawers, and Bill Gates is a visionary. But they DON'T do quality software. Even having monopoly, billon dolars, all the resources that a company could have to make the best, they produce mediocre software. And that there are lot of people using their stuff doesn't mean they are great. How many people bought Enron shares? (just a really small example, there are many).
M$ is really worried about the growing linux community, they fear because M$ can destroy (or buy) any company they want to (they did it several times), but they don't know how to handle (sabotage) a FREE project.

Mediocare products?? I supposed you could make a better product then Windows 2003 and XP? What's your expectations of a product that makes these ersion mediocre?? I think 2003 and XP are great products, very stable and very flexible. I can't remember the last time an XP machine crashed on me (a 2003 server has NEVER crashed on me yet).

I'm not going to say Linux is a mediocre product...I actually use a linux box as our NMS...Linux just doesn't support everything I need it to...and I happen to like windows more. I wouldn't call either of these products "mediocre" (NT was mediocre and ME was just garbage tho')
