Microsoft Fixes Patch Installation Snafu

When trying to download the seven security updates released by Microsoft on Tuesday, many users found one of the patches continually failed to install. MS06-007 covered a denial of service attack in the Windows TCP/IP stack. In response, Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and updated the patch.

The issue only affected users trying to upgrade through Automatic Updates, Windows Update, Windows Server Update Services and Systems Management Server 2003 when using the ITMU. Microsoft has since resolved the problem and says the patch will be properly installed the next time Windows checks for updates. Users can also visit Windows Update manually.

It means that if you purchased a product and I purchased the same product that we both paid the equal amount for the same product and that what we would consider to be a fair and desent price.

And what on earth is "the ITMU"?

I don't think your point about "only 4" is very convincing when some of these methods are obviously so obscure that you've never heard of them.

went out and downloaded it manually still worked. not a big deal.

It *is* a big deal. We [geeks and semi-geeks] invariably forget that we are just 1% of the computing population. The remaining 99% saw the download/update did not work, said okay, and moved on to something else.

They did not go to any forums for a solution. They did not call their computer tech for assistance. In fact, is it not the reality that people will not manually perform updates the entire rationale behind Microsoft's auto-update? Answer: Yes.

The thought that the failed update had left their computers less secured than intended *never* crossed the minds of that ninety-nine percent. And how do I know this? I deal with those people every single day. And, they never cease to amaze me.

Good point you have there and one I won't argue with! The only thing I can say is that most of those non-geeks probably have Automatic Updates enabled (it's enabled by default anyways) so they likely got the patch a day or two later. But, yeah, I'm sure they did move on to something else in the blink of an eye!
