Microsoft to Unveil Secret Project Mar. 2

By Nate Mook, BetaNews

February 24, 2006, 2:06 PM

With speculation flying about what "fun new products" Apple plans to announce next week, from video iPods to DVR-enabled Mac minis, Microsoft has its own surprise up its sleeve. The Web is abuzz with guesses as to what the Redmond company plans to unveil at origamiproject.com on March 2.

The site, registered by Microsoft and "discovered" early this week, provides few hints. A Flash animation pops up three questions: "Do you know what I can do? Or where I can go? Or how I can change your life?" It ends with the text, "Learn more on 3.2.06."

Imagery of circuitry, clouds and office buildings has sparked rumors that Microsoft may be readying a new mobile communications device. Company evangelist and blogger Robert Scoble says he was unaware of the Origami Project site, but hints: "I do know that Origami is the code-name for a new kind of device. Oh, heck, here come the NDA police, gotta go!"

Scoble's comments may refer to a prototype handheld device demoed at COMDEX in 2001 by National Semiconductor.

"About the size and weight of a small digital camcorder, the National Geode 'Origami' Mobile Communicator is a flexible unit that folds and unfolds to perform eight popular consumer electronics functions in one easy-to-use device," the company said at the time.

Other industry watchers are speculating Origami could be a new type of wearable PC that "unfolds" to run Windows Mobile and costs under $500.

Analysts who have been briefed on the project are keeping mum on any details, building up the suspense for next week. "Expect that we'll have a lot to say about what it all means as well as the implications over the next few weeks," says Jupiter Research vice president Michael Gartenberg.

1) There's gonna be a LOT of chairs flying, and broken windows to repair...

or

That is incorrect. It still displays the BSOD by default, but reboots so quickly that if you are not paying any attention you will simply miss it.

If you are experiencing freezes, it sounds more likely you have a hardware and/or driver problem than simply Windows being "naturally" unstable. A properly administered Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 based computer can be a very stable machine.

I remember now that you are correct. Hasn't happen in years so you tend to forget. Indeed WinXP is extremely stable though I still get the monthly or so system freeze and normally I know what caused it (currently it's either the Flash player inside my Maxthon browser throwing a runaway process on me, or ACDSee doing same). It's not a hardware or drivers issue in my case. I expect others to experience freezeups and hiccups as well (95% of the time killing the offending process solves the matter).

Knowing Microsoft, it will probably be something like a new kind of DRM.

They are clueless enough to want to create a buzz around something like that.

This reminds me of the huge hype about 10 years ago surrounding Pepsi's new motto, which would be ceremoniously unveiled during the Superbowl. Since Pepsi had been doing lots of fun and exciting Superbowl ads, it seemed like it might actually be some kind of neat event. (Relatively speaking, after all it _was_ just a commercial).

Then, the day of the Big Game and it's unveiled:

Pepsi. Gotta have it.

Big whoop! I think that lasted even less time than New Coke.

I'm betting this big announcement will either be something no one is interested in ("A cellphone that has a built-in compass!")
or something that sounds really cool, but is complete vapor... kinda like Bill Gates audaciously vowing to eliminate spam in two years and then Microsoft delivering absolutely nothing on the promise.

MS is so desperate to be perceived as cool and relevant, but they are even lower than AOL on the cool-o-meter (somewhere around 50 nanofonzies) and about as relevant as Lotus.

Whoopie doo.

I love how they make huge deals about stuff they are going to release and they pump it all up for nothing.

Apple did that about releasing a video ipod and I was like "who freaking cares?"

A new "device" of any kind doesn't even deserve press.

Unless it promotes time travel, can pause real life, is a light saber, etc, it's not worthy of the kind of press that this thing is getting for March 2nd.

Microsoft cannot make a device that I can hold in my hand (like a phone or something) that will change my life. As far as I'm concerned nobody can.

Has a cell phone changed my life? No. I use it but I'm not attached to it like many people are.

Things that are a big deal:

Discovering electricity
Discovering fire
The Automobile
The Airplane
The Wheel
The Computer
Data/Voice Networks
The Ink Pen
etc.....

Things that are NOT a big deal:

Cell phones
Airbags
Antilock brakes
Computer software
PDA's and similar devices
Wireless things
Carpet cleaning products
Game Consoles
Computer games
Video cards
Things that cost $19.95
