Nearly 3% of America became iPod converts over the holiday

By Tim Conneally | Published February 29, 2008, 1:25 PM

With 40% of last quarter's iPod sales going to first-time buyers, Apple managed to convert a sizeable segment of the entire United States into white earbud wearers.

In analyst David Bailey's research notes to Goldman Sachs investment bank, he noted that of the Q1 2008 sales of Apple's iPod, 40 percent were to first-time buyers.

While the figure was meant to illustrate that media players have a long time before reaching saturation in the American market, it gave a good idea of how big an impact the device still has on the populace.

In the company's earnings call for the quarter, Apple's Chief Operating Officer Timothy D. Cook said the iPod Touch could have actually contributed more to overall iPod sales if it wasn't introduced as a high-end device, but the goal for the year was more to establish it as a platform. Sales of the Touch are expected to pick up speed.

Achieving a 17% year-over-year increase in revenue, 22.1 million iPods sold during the quarter, which closed at the end of the year.

Weighed against the approximate US Population of 303 million (source: US Census Bureau), that is the equivalent of seven percent of America buying an iPod last quarter. With 40% of sales being new customers, that amounts to nearly three percent of the entire population of the U.S. purchasing one of Apple's media players for the first time.

How about free software? Or games? Does Mac even have games? :)

Really, the question that comes into my mind is; Why should one buy a Mac? I have to admit, i don't know much about Macs, but neither have i seen any reasons to even consider buying one.

Macs do have games. I'm not a gamer myself, but let us keep in mind that the new Macs can run Windows, if necessary.

However, I hardly expect Macs to be the platform of choice for gamers.

As for reasons for buying a Mac, I can only speak for my own reasons - and I'm sure some will disagree with them (and I respect that):
1 - Stability - Macs are extremely stable. Even if a program does crash, it usually won't afect anything other than itself.

2 - Performance - My old MacCube (450Mhz with 512Mb) can do most of Vista's new tricks under Tiger, while running some heavy software such as Photoshop, and Office, altogether. As for my newer Macs, I've never been able to do anything that would slow them down. Multitasking under a Mac is excellent.

3 - Interface - Far more pleasant and intuitive than any Windows machine I've ever played with. Also, integration among iLife apps is fantastic.

4 - New tricks - Apple is always providing some nice new tricks. First was indexed searching, which now every computer has, now it's the Time Machine, and so forth. For some, these are useless, but for me they are very nice.

5 - Best multimedia apps - Macs are the best computer out there for handling graphics, photos and movies.

6 - Safety - Since Macs are not the standard platform, there is very little malicious code that will affect it. Most malicious code is written to run under Windows. Also, the Unix core is arguably a little safer.

7 - Lack of Patience - The greatest reason of all: I work with Windows all day long. I have no patience to use it even at home. I need a break from it. LOL

8 - Ease of use - Every family has newbies in them. I love the fact that those who are not very computer literate can use Macs fairly easily, and with very little risk of breaking things. Granted, Vista has improved on that. But it's become too annoying, IMHO.

For me, those reasons are more than enough to justify the extra bucks. Of course, like I said, some will disagree. I'm not trying to say that Macs are the best platform for everyone or every case. However, it's just not fair to label them as some sort of overpriced computer family chosen only by idiots. :-)

Obviously you haven't spent much time using UNIX either.

The primary advantage the Mac offers is a very competitively priced machine (if you do not want to build one, and like it or not, the average user does not)that is able to run ALL environments. Like it or not.

And others mention price. So let's debate it. But first one might want to discover the prices! Then if anyone wants to debate that after price a DUAL QUAD CORE XEON non-Apple computer and compare it to the Mac Pro for $2800.

Not only do most not know the environments that run on the Mac, they don't know the hardware nor prices.

And if someone desire or need/want the option to run Both UNIX and Windows (and even Linux, the baby UNIX designed by Windows users to look like Windows without applications that can't talk to Windows and with a file structure that confuses both UNIX and Windows folks - and yeah, I know, its about to take over the desktop any minute now! ;-), or if they just want an elegant powerful environment without wanting to know anything about how the machine works, the Mac excels.

The MacBook is available for about $1000 and the miniMac for about $600, and a 24 inch IMac for about $1800 - very competitively priced - whether one like them or not.

And they work JUST FINE as a Windows machine. If that is your strange idea of of an improvement.

At least get your facts straight.

Oh, but YOUR worry is about GAMES!
Hmmmmm...

If you and others are clueless about a product, it follows that you probably wouldn't want one.

What some people fail to understand is that Apple doesn't target their products at having a better hardware, or more features for the gadget-loving Geeks out there.

Apple's products are simply targeted at providing a better overall user experience for Mr. Joe Average, and at that they do very well. Nobody points a gun at a user and says they must buy a certain product. If the iPod really sucked, would it still be successful after so many generations?

Same goes with the iPhone. I saw many people whining about it when it came out, saying it didn't have the best hardware. True, it doesn't. But I've owned several smartphones and I can tell you that none of them offered anything anywhere close to the pleasant experience of using an iPhone. In a world where interfaces are awful and devices are so annoying to use (and I've owned lots of them), the iPhone is surprisingly pleasant, up to a point that I end up using it a lot more often than any other device I've ever owned.

If you want the best bang for the buck or cutting-edge hardware specs, then Apple products may not be for you. But some of us here prefer a pleasant user experience over that. The Acoustimass sub also has a paper cone driver hidden in a seventh order bandpass enclosure which is hugely efficient but limited to a strict range of frequency. The amp that drives the sub costs BOSE around 5-6 dollars to produce.

I do not bash the iPod, for I have one. I don't consider myself a sheep following the Apple flock. It just so happens that the iPod currently has better industry-wide support, and I settled for the sake of convenience. It does not mean that I felt the iPod was the best all-around media player for the price, for it is truly not. It just happened to meet a need I had, and nothing more.

iRiver, Creative, Microsoft... many companies have similar products that offer far more features for less money. It has evolved, certainly, but it still has a long way to go before it becomes a viable alternative for which Mr. Joe Average doesn't need to call technical support to install his new camera software.

And Apple's OS didn't become as successful because of Apple's market tactics - they decided on closed architecture, while PCs were open. But what can we say about IBM? Have things really turned out better for them? It's a somewhat controversial issue.

Nowadays, why is it that Macs are seeing a sort of comeback? Because with Internet, open formats and higher compatibility between platforms, being a Mac owner is no longer like being stranded in a desert island. That, and the greater ease of porting software for Macs (given its Unix core and switch to Intel processors.)

But still, being a proprietary system, it will never rise above a certain market share. And Apple knows it.

And why do the MS fanboys and anti-Apple fanboys come out of the woodwork to decend on this thread just to b!tch and moan about the iPod (and Apple and the Mac for that matter) - something they claim to not care about.

Emotionally mature folks ignore what they don't care about. They don't need to obsess about that which they don't care about.

And they certainly don't worry about what someone else runs nor if those people like what they use.

Wouldn't it be nice if MS could engender the same customer sat for the same reasons that Apple does - and no, they don't.

The reason the iPod is popular is that people like it, be it for it's elegance of design, its shape, its color or thefact that maybe people are simply enamored by fruit. Who cares? People like it.

And you or others can tell us how stupid folks are to like it, just as anyone who runs any of the larger more capable UNIX environments can easily say the same about the mediocre Windows environment.

But who cares, if the Zune or Windows floats your boat, USE IT! It doesn't bother me! I use it when I have to, its a tool. Not the best, but so what. I will use the OS that I like best when I have the choice. And if someone else likes another environment and they use it, fine!

But NOT here!

Unfortunately the constant whine about this place is akin to a religious argument where the other person is correct ONLY when they reflect your opinion, instead of simply debating the pros and cons of each environment without some pathological ignorance of the differing opinion until they capitulate and adopt your obsession.

The irony is that religion and politics have the potential to be debated intelligently in a polite and respectful way that explores the issue rather than simply tries to denigrate the other. But not here! After all, that would assume a level of maturity that transcends that of an 8 year old. And I suspect that the average age of this forum is somewhere closer to 14-16! ;P

Again, if they like it and want to say it in a thread about the #&$%# product, so be it. You complain about those who like it, but complaints seem to be just fine...

After all, THEY are "stupid"! And the MARKETPLACE is "stupid"! Aren't THEY?

Well, most are here in a thread regarding a product they claim not to care about, whining about how those who like it are "stupid".

So I just might have a suggestion as to who the really stupid persons are.

Not to mention lost looking for information regarding a product they actually like and care about!

Allot of folks like it and are willing to buy it.

Don't you wish the wonderful Edsel's that you like, but which no one buys as they don't suit their needs and desires, did so well???

Oh, but they are SO MUCH BETTER! Right! Obviously they don't suit the perceived needs of the "stupid" marketplace. And the engineer's of the products you tout aren't smart enough to satisfy the "stupid" marketplace. Ain't they swooft!?

But no, YOU "don't bash the iPod" as you tell us how stupid the buyers and users are. Yo see, YOU "are not a sheep" like all the other users! You are enlightened, whereas the others are mindless and stupid. And the product is "best"because it suits their needs - whatever they may be!!! - best!

For the same reason that YOU have one genius!

But I love how you subjectively decide what other's should like and what suits their needs! The fact is, those 'superior'(sic) products haven't made a significant inroad into the market.

And if you don't see the irony of that statement, YOU are the stupid one.

People can use whatever platform that suits their preferences. And ironically, if we applied the same standards and evaluated all products on the basis of elegance and power, we certainly wouldn't be spending much time talking about Windows - and even less time using it!

Choice is good. Unfortunately, many just can't stand to see others exercise their freedom to choose differently than they would.

Deal with it.

The Zune for example is one of them, the 2nd generation of the device has gotten pretty strong reviews and even mentioned as a worthy competitor for ipod now. But because we have the anti-ms crowd, it has to be horrible because MS made it.

Both devices have their advantages and disadvantages.

The following is MY OPINION AND VIEWS ON USAGE OF THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS:

Personally I like the UI on the Zune better, its more intuitive and navigation is cleaner, with ipod I need to go back a screen to view by a different topic with the Zune I just push the direction pad over 1 time.

The Sansa is nice as it can be used with a variety of freeware programs.

Ipod is nice as damn near everything works for it, and has a plethra of accessories.

The Zune software I find is much cleaner and less heavy to navigate through, it does have issues with importing some songs as the metadata gets messed up I believe its caused by songs that are downloaded.

Itunes click and drag is a nightmare selecting multilples is a chore, also their autofill feature tends to only fill itunes store's songs (if this can be prevented I would love to know how) Also Itunes installs mobile support everytime itunes needs to be updated and has processes that are always running whether you want them or not. Its also well documented that Ipods like to freeze up and stop working which is quite annoying when you cannot get to a pc as you are several hundred miles away. Buying another one does not fix this issue its a flaw with the entire product line.

I don't care about the iPod or the Zune or any other of the 'convenience over fidelity' utility devices, except to recognize the market.

But I do care about the fanboy BS. And what could be a relatively intelligent discussion of market factors is consistently lost in the attempt of the majority trying to push their opinion on the larger market who doesn't care - as witnessed by sales! Duh!

But that doesn't stop YOU from attempting to prove some point about your opinion of various units!

And mister wizard, no one called it the Zune or any other device as "low quality" EXCEPT to the degree that all of the devices feature LOW FIDELITY default playback formats! DEAL WITH IT! Sorry you don't understand the reference to audio formats! But your confusion continues yet again.

And the majority of folks have decided that they like the iPod over the competition, for whatever reason! And the reasons don't matter, except to the degree that the competition has failed to figure them out and provide a more competitive product.

So the seemingly endless attempt to push the alternatives, as you try so hard to do is moot. Who cares? Obviously not those who have decided to the contrary and gotten an iPod. But you just can't accept that can you as you just feel the need to keep debating a moot point!

The point of the article was not that there there aren't alternatives nor that you can't buy another product, but the fact remains that the alternatives are in the minority. Cry and whine all you like, but they nevertheless DOMINATE the market.

But I love how you point out that the iPod is optimized to work with iTunes. Really? Go figure! Now, if it could only corrupt metadata like the Zune...THEN they would really be onto something! ROFLMAO!

Just got a Zune 80 last month, love the device. Have used the iPods, don't see any real benefit in using an iPod over a Zune, they are both the same price, and the Zune offers more for your money.

Baaaaaf! Be smart if you have an iSheep, use SharePod instead of BlowTunes. I also use it for a portable backup drive that happens to play MP3's.

I'll second that. SharePod is a very nice free utility that also lets you transfer tunes back to a PC.

Also, ml_ipod for Winamp is nice for quick and easy transfers from your playlist.

Best of all, SharePod lets you grab everyone elses music and share yours with them.

Why don't you have someone control your entire life? Go jump off a bridge.

I'm a thrill junkie. Coasters, rides like the ones at the top of the Stratosphere (three of the most intense rides ever built), things like that.

I also bungied across from the Circus Circus in Vegas (A J Hackett).

Bungie jumping.....one thing no one will ever and I repeat EVER see me do.

Be careful, there were some people that had received thrombus after they performed bungie jumping, as well as coaster rides.

I looked up thrombus, I think I'm destined to check out early anyways, no worries.
