Nintendo Profits Soar on Strong Wii Sales

By the Betanews Staff | Published July 25, 2007, 12:21 PM

Nintendo continued to impress investors, posting another solid quarter thanks to strong Wii sales. Its strength was apparent in recent surveys that show during the month of June, the Wii outsold the PS3 by 4 to 1 and the Xbox by 2 to 1 in the US market. In Japan, where Sony is traditionally strong, the numbers were even better. The Wii managed to outsell the PS3 there by a 6 to 1 margin.

Nintendo's profits skyrocketed to 80.3 billion yen ($669 million USD) from 15.6 ($129 million USD) in the year-ago quarter. Such strong results have led Nintendo to raise its full year profit forecast to 245 billion yen from 174.3 billion yen. Altogether, Nintendo has sold 9.3 million Wii consoles worldwide, and may soon overtake Xbox 360 for the lead in sales. Microsoft has sold about 11 million units worldwide, according to reports.

Dont forget, its great to have soaring hardware sales... but its important to have a good software attachment rate also.
And theres only one console doing VERY well with that currently ;)

Yes also don't you dare mention the fact that the 360 has a higher attach rate than the POS3 and Wii put together.

How is that possible, I look at my game library and see over 30 360 games 1 PS3 games and 5 wii. Add the 4 more preorders for the 360 and non for PS3 and Wii. Like you stated before so many good games coming for the 360 its crazy. But then again some fanboys say nothing good is coming for the 360 and its dead.

I would like to see more good stuff come out for the Wii. If I'm lucky they might make Q-bert 2 so I'll have something to play on the PS3. I never would have thoght that the best games for a $600 video game system would be downloads. Sad, very sad.

I do however praise Nintendo for making a system that appeals to the masses.

I love the M$ fanboi's on here...so predictable. the Wii will have a larger installed base than the 360 very soon.

It will take some additional time to overcome the _year_ advantage the 360 has had in software sales.

By the end of the year, the Wii will own everything in this generation, except the length of time on the market. And i am sure there will be posts about how much better it is to have had a year headstart or how much more mature the system is, etc...

The software attach rate is very important when your not making money on the hardware.

Wii itself is profitable, so its far less important - They are not relying solely on game sales to make money.

First Nintendo comes in and kicks Sony's ass. now BD losing steam badly to HD-DVD even though 95% of the next gen movie players out there are BD/PS3's.

Sony is losing billions with BD and the PS3 and Microsoft is still making money hand over fist even with their 360 issues.

The top ten HD movies for each format are neck and neck in sales volume. Can Sony do anything right?

Nintendo is doing everything right and won't have to cut the price on the Wii until the start stacking up at stores, which wont be until Spring 2008.

Of course we then list the other choices:
Nintendo DS
Gameboy Advanced
PSP
Playstation 3

In this case you can say #2 = #1. Though they are both new game consoles, in which NIN is selling at the #1 spot, you cannot put them in the same catagory. What he is trying to say is that overall NIN is #1, MS #1 in the next gen/hd catagory.

For god sakes troll. Maybe everything has to be spelled out. Yes a hard drive would be needed, you can add that if you want. You make it sound like it is impossible to add on. You would be renting the movie wise guy. The PS3 proves that most people that have a high def drive in the system don't use the drive, look at attachment rates so your point is mute. Nothing is stopping from buying the movie. You are priming this for the PS3 is great crap I can see it already. If it was so great the Wii would not be leading sales but it is. Exactly. I bet all those major chains selling consoles like Best Buy, Walmart, Zellers, Future Shop, etc. were getting tired of Sony using them as storage area for their dust collecting POS3. It's not a price drop, it's a clearance sale because they're desperate to move inventory. Where Nintendo is still having trouble making enough Wiis to keep up with demand, I bet Sony is actually making way more POS3s than they can sell, or even s*** into the channel.
