It's about time. I'm not a huge fan of Opera, but when I tried it a couple years ago it was definately a good browser. Much better than IE anyway. Had they made this switch last year, I might have been using it instead of firefox.

I think they lost a lot of popularity due to charging. Making it free was the best move they've ever made.

I like it... it's fun! I like the Voice commands... when they work, I think it would work better if it was not Tabbed browsing. I downloaded the Birthday version of Opera and got a Free reg-key with it I thought that was pretty kewl. I've also downloaded a few skins and extras, and there are lots to download.

It's funny when running the Pop-up stopper that comes with Opera because I have a Pop-up stopper running in my system tray and there is this one news site (ABC News) that has an ad of some sort trying to pop and when I click on it to close it there is just a Blink and Everything that has to do with Opera is closed... It's more funny than it is annoying though! hehe

The one complaint I do have, and before you ask - Yes Java is Enabled - Some javascripts don't seem to want to run. Some work, but others just seem to load and than just not run. I don't know what's up with that, I checked the settings and it seems like everything is enabled that should be.

Congratulations to Opera, this is a great decision. Opera is by far the fastest, lightest most secure web browser on the planet and now that it's free there's no reason to use anything else. :)

Not an Opera fan myself (haven't even tried it in at least 3 years so there is no real reason why), but this is great news.

Its definitely improved since 3 years ago. You should give it a try - nothing to lose. I like it because its faster than Firefox. I also think the UI is a bit more streamlined.

As I stated below, ad muncher far exceeds the capabilities of ad block, i am not getting into it again, if you want to fine, but I am sick of trying to prove stuff to people who arent going to be open minded and give something an honest try. I tried ad block, it paled in comparison (after a 2 month trial with it) to ad muncher. I am no longer going to try and prove my opinions to anyone, either you take my opinion for what its worth, just that, or you dont. Just because some people cant stand when someone bad mouths their beloved freeware, doesnt mean that freeware is always better.

Some people fail to realize that their opinion isnt the only one in the world, I am trying to give the person an answer to their question, an adblocker for opera, and he cant seem to get over the fact that someone would choose A) another browser over firefox, B) another program over ad block.

I'm with Metshrine on his assessment of ad muncher. it is an outstanding advert blocking utility. For all you detractors out there, give it a try. Your surfing experience will improve dramatically.

It's free and works very well. You can add to the list that comes with it and have Wild Cards. I've been using it for quite a long time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like that tool only blocks popups; not inline ads embedded in the page.

All I can say is that it's about time. I can say that it loads and renders pages marginally faster than Firefox, nothing earthshattering. I also downloaded Opera and decided to give it another try. I can't quite ut my finger on what it is, but something just doesn't click. I still like Firefox better. I will however say I like Opera much better than I ever liked IE. IE doesn't hold anywait for me anymore since I don't use windows.

Incidently, Opera isn't a failed business. Only a small portion of their income comes from their desktop browser. They make most of their money from the embedded market. This move will increase desktop market share, hence giving their profit-generating side of business more notoriety. This isn’t desperation; it makes the most business sense.

This was a wise move by Opera. They have a great product. Opera is by far the fastest browser I have on my system (I have FF and IE 7). IE 7 does not seem as fast as far as rendering speed. It is faster on startup of course.

Fireflop has the ugliest interface ever...YUK...Opera is much faster, and has a great built in email client, whereas fire flop needs an external client....nuff said but there are hundreds more reasons to use Opera vs the FLOP

Opera has automatic update check feature, but there's no option to disable or set the frequency. or does it even tell you that it's calling home.

I was using Opera 8 that was offered for free one day, and today I get this pop-up out of nowhere to upgrade. The entire time it was calling home without telling me jack.

Don't tell me you didn't know that you can turn off Firefox's automatic update check in the options menu. His point was that Opera does not give you an option to turn it off or even tell you it exists.

The first time I saw the update message on FF, I went into the preferences and just turn it off.

First time I saw the update nag from Opera, I went into options to find they don't give you any choice. So much for alternative browser.

Sweet. I always hated Opera until version 8. Now.... well... I somewhat like it.

It is fast, I'll give it that, but I don't like the way it ignores certain STANDARD CSS. I have had several cases now where Opera insists on ignoring very specific definitions (such as no underline on hyperlinks) in my CSS code.

If my standard code (which renders EXACTLY how I want in all other major browsers) would render properly in it, it would be my favorite.

One big thing Firefox users (including myself) really like is the ability to exclude ads. Therefore, any of Opera's appeal was completely lost when they discovered there were always ads visible taking up screen real-estate.

Wow, ad blocking is nothing new, it existed WELL BEFORE THE AD BLOCK EXTESION. Ad Muncher, along with several other, although not as good, ad blockers existed long before firefox even hit .1 release. Ad Muncher far exceeds ad block's capabilities, and it has a default list which is updated 4-5 times per week and as such blocks 99% of ads without ANY user intervention being required. And get this, although its not free (25 dollars for lifetime updates), it works with ANY web browser so you arent limited to an extension that works only with firefox, or only opera, or only ie, it works with all HTTP enabled APPLICATIONS (Not just web browsers, such as AIM, ICQ, etc)

and, if you can read, i put that in my post. God forbid anyone use something that costs money when it blows the freeware alternatives out of the water. Paying 25$ means I get ad free browsing without having to spend extra time looking for a list or manually updating my list with a list I have to completely redownload. Ad Muncher updates AUTOMATICALLY and has a list that is probably alot larger than any list you will find for ad block.

I don't see ads with adblock, and I have to update it maybe 3-4 times a year with the occasional ad. My filter list is only a few hundred long and quite a bit of regex is in there.

I don't want someone else's list. I want to block logos, flash, entire advertising domains and even pictures that are on sites that I find redundant (like betanews large buttons at the top I block because I find them space wasters.)

The extension works nicely because with a backup of my FF profile, the adblocking follows me wherever I go in my domain. I don't need to load a separate exe or program taking up resources.

$25 for updates? My FF adblock extension, in conjunction with my filterset.G autoupdate extension gives my updates for free. I have yet to see an Ad in FF with this setup.

This is a 8.1 release at best. Where is the auto completion and built in ad blocker Opera? It´s still my favorite browser but I don´t see how they can continue to improve it now that they don´t want our money anymore.

Umm... it's the magic wand...

The Magic Wand doesn´t do what Auto Completion does. For example if I search for something at Google the search text is not saved so if I later want to make the same search I have to type it in again. And that´s just one example of how I use Auto Completion.

So since this release had no new features and was called 8.5 I suppose this "Merlin" release with some new features (probably not the ones I want) will be called Opera 11 or something.

Its one of the major browsers yes, its one of the two competitors for IE. Unless you fail to read the articles that list it as such. I honestly dont consider it that major of a competitor until it hits 10%, but other articles (pc world, max pc, pc magazine, CPU (Computer Power User) all seem to list it as one of the primary competitors (and thus a major browser) in the browser wars

Well, at the risk of receiving one of your venemous attacks, unless you've exhausted all your resources on gawd21 already, I hate to burst your bubble Aussie71, but Opera's market share is hovering around a paltry 1%. Trust me, I've seen a few recent, credible articles already to make this claim. However, this latest version of Opera, from what I've seen so far, is very impressive. So if the developers continue to improve this version, I see no reason why they can't eventually gain a bigger piece of the market share pie.

Opera is NOT faster than Firefox on my system and after I installed this crap my firefox was slowed so much that it tooa while to load. I bet that Opera is pulling the old trick that Netscape pulled with IE. I will keep away from Opera. I never did care for the company.

What exactly is it that you hate about opera? I think the ONLY thing I dont like about it is its lack of 3rd party support to allow for the utmost customization and addition of functionality to the browser. They choose to remain closed and until the day comes that they open their doors to 3rd parties, I will be a firefox user. Opera is a great browser, it is VERY VERY fast, and its rendering engine is top notch, but it doesnt allow me to do what I WANT with it, without regards for whats included in the browser.

Well it's ugly. And it did slow down everything until I removed it and deleted the file in my Programfiles and removed the reg entries. After it's install it took Firefox almost a minute to load. Opera took about 30 seconds. Normally Firefox will load in about 2 seconds maybe 3 if I just rebooted.

This isn't the fastest of computers, but it shouldn't have slowed down from a almost 6 meg install. p4 2.4g
1g pc 3200
60G boot drive and two 160g back ups.

Clean install of XP Pro sp2 as of lastnight.

What exactly is ugly about it? The new version touts a minimalistic interface just like FF (My current default browser, I already stated why opera isnt my default). Opera loads for me in about 6 seconds, on my 3400+, and firefox loads in about 4. I dont consider that slow nor has it slowed down any loading of any pages in my other browsers.

I am not talking page load times I am talking program load times. Everything about it is ugly. The whole task area looks like a twisted IE/FF mix that fell and was put togther by a young child that still didn't know it's colors.
