PS3 Sales in Japan Fall 49 Percent
By the Betanews Staff | Published December 1, 2006, 11:06 AM
Sales of the PlayStation 3 in Japan fell by almost half in the first full week of availability, and low shipments are being blamed for the lackluster sales, say gaming company Enterbrain. The site had estimated that 88,400 consoles sold in the first two days of launch, but from November 13 to 18 only 43,378 sold. Sony will not comment on the report, but said it was continuously shipping new consoles.
Data for the US is not yet available, although it is likely that sales will follow a similar pattern. At issue is the Blu-ray disc drive within the console. Sony hasn't been able to procure the blue laser diodes needed, among a host of other manufacturing difficulties. The problems are also affecting game sales; PS3's highest-ranking title in Japan was Ridge Racer 7, coming in at #29.
Mark Gillespie, I can't figure someone like you out.. So far you have called me an Idiot, lyre, Naive and whatever else I don't remember. If you recall this all started because I told everybody about the experience I had with Sony. The problem was it was broke right out of the box and they wouldn't fix it. I don't care about the problems XBOX had on there launch or the problems Sony is having for that matter. Just provide customer service and take care of it. Don't be unethical and make excuses on why it's my fault it don't work it's clearly theirs No company is perfect their Will be defects, no problem, just step up and take care or your mess ups. I never expected Sony to launch all the console without a problem. I just expected them to stand up and correct there mistakes, They did not, They would rather do the unethical thing and slide through some loop hole. From what I get from you, you are young and probably haven't been though to much. I have been in this situation before, just a different company this time, but it's the same scenario all the time. The big powerhouse company stepping on the little guy, and you know why because they can. If it hasn't happened to you yet it will and I hope you remember all the trash you accused me of being. When all I am is a little guy being stepped on by a financial giant because they can. Why you would stick up for them is baffling they would step on you if given the chance they don't care about you or me. They care about money, and you should be outraged that your beloved Sony has screwed me. I have my own business and I live by one rule, spend a $1.00 today to make a customer happy, and they will pay you $2.00 tomorrow. My only guess you are so protective of them is they bought you your first house, Paid the medical bills of your first born, and bought you a car to drive. What has Sony done for you to win you ridiculous loyalty?

Another quote from a site which tested Blu-Ray against HD-DVD
"But Blu-ray's problems didn't end there. Occasional compression artifacts and brightness issues also led the site to crown HD DVD the winner. "In our first head-to-head comparison, we found the HD DVD to be superior," wrote Peter Bracke. "The unfortunate cropping of the Blu-ray image, coupled with more noticeable compression artifacts and an overall darker cast, can't compete with the more consistently pleasing presentation of the HD DVD."
It's just opinion though, right Dave?
The funny thing is, I am having the hardest time finding anything saying Blu-Ray's picture is superior, unless you wrote it.

What makes you think the ps3 is going to be perfect especially since it is using brand new tech?
The xbox 360 failure rate was 3% not 15% (I could be wrong) but then again xbox admitted their mistakes and didnt try charging someone.
Even if they bought it elsewhere even though it was never opened and brand new.
I think the ps3 has the potential to be great (but it has been stated it will take years before the potential of the cell processor will be realized, by then everyone could have moved on and Sony sealed its fate)
The problem is its price, programming for it is a b****, and customer support for Sony is a joke.
I think it is cool that you can switch out the hd (which is a nice feature) but as of now there is not many games that are new/ exclusive.

You are a self admitted non Blu-Ray owner. That means you have to shut up and actually put your money (you don't have) where your huge mouth is and back the format you think is so great.
You are the type of person who complains about George Bush but never took the time to vote. Therefore you don't get to whine about one format or the other.
I am probably the only person in here who owns a BD "player" and hates the format, the complany who's pushing it and everything Blu_Ray is about.
I know HD-DVD is better, I've seen them side by side at CEDIA, the joke of the event was the Blu-Ray display and the non-working PS3 at the Sony booth.
Until then, I hadn't seen either format in person so I had no idea what the differences were. Like everyone says in here, Blu-Ray tends to look very grainy with a lot of artifacts.
HD-DVD blew me away. The people at the Toshiba booth took us around and actually explained the differences, they also gave us a Toshiba HD-DVD demo disc, which they don't normally give out.
As soon as we mentioned HD-DVD at the Sony booth, they turned into a couple of Mark and Dave's. They got all defensive and tried to make us feel stupid for even asking about it.
We commented on the grainyness of the picture, they blamed it on the player and said it would get better. The usual from Soon.....Only Not Yet. Although the banners all over thier display said "Superior to HD-DVD". It was a complete joke.
This is why I am such a huge fan of HD-DVD, the picture IS better, the movies are selling 10 to 1 over BD. The best part is, people who actually care about picture and sound are telling people who don't know about the new formats that BD is a joke.
People usually listen to other people who know more than they do about electronics. My own brother-in-law asked about Blu_Ray at the dinner table at Thanksgiving because he was at Best Buy, and he saw a movie he liked in the BD / HD-DVD section.
When he asked the salesman, the blue s***s told him that HD-DVD simply isn't selling and to invest in a BD player. He suspected the guy was full of crap and asked me during dinner, with 20 people at the table.
When I started to explain the differences and why HD-DVD was better, and also the sales numbers are exactly the opposite what the idiot at Best Buy said because they get a spiff for every BD player sold. It seemed like everybody was listening to what I had to say.
He said he would go back to the store to talk to the manager about why the salesman didn't recommend the cheaper player with better picture and more titles.
So please go buy a BD player and then you can say anything you want. You are the worst kind of fanboy, most of them actually OWN the equipment they love so much.

You are REALLY unbelivable, Rattle and hum is actually WORSE on HD-DVD. Go cry...
Excerpt from the article:
"I am not sure what my expectations were, but I actually think 'Rattle and Hum' looks narrowly better on Blu-ray. But first I'll get my complaints out of the way that apply to both formats. 'Rattle and Hum' is a severely grainy, messy film, and the source material suffers unnecessarily from age and neglect. Dirt is frequent, as are blemishes, and even the vivid lighting of the color portions of the film look fuzzy and smeared. Add to that some pixelization, edge enhancement and inconsistent contrast and sharpness, and you have an image that hardly impresses, regardless of format.
Detail is also predictably wanting on both the Blu-ray and the HD DVD,

Since the PS3 is not a dedicated player, the numbers aren't changing. There are a whole lot of HD-DVD add on's out there. Which apparently only you and I kknow will be used for one purpose only. Watching crisp, clear, non grainy HD-DVD movies.
This whole thing backfired for Sony, they just can't admit it. The HD-DVD add on to an established console was genius.
I am getting so tired of asking these two apes to prove the numbers that are up for everyone to see are wrong. All they keep doing is posting the same BD promo sites and some eggheads opinion of the BD vs. HD-DVD war that was posted months before Blu_Ray even had a crippled player to offer.
The difference between people like us and DaveBG and Mark is we don't take this all that serious. HD-DVD could tank tomorrow and I wouldnt care. These two sit up all night thinking how they can spread the word about BD and pat each other on the back in the official Blu_Ray forum.
Which by the way, you will get banned for posting anything pro HD-DVD. Sony runs that little forum like a communist newspaper. If you search Blu_Ray on Google, the forum shows up in the number two or three spot, so when you go there, all you see is pro BD posts.

We drove to the video store after I picked him up from school and bought some games with great joy thinking we were going to be playing it in the next hour. Wrong, We got it home and guess what it does not work!!!! But it gets worse, I call customer service told them what happened and they told me "ok but it's not covered anymore under warrinty". After gaining my composer I asked why? I was then told they will not warrenty it becouse it was bought off ebay. I argued that a year warrenty is on the console. They rudely told me it was not but for $149.00 and my old console they would be happy to send me a new one. I felt real bad for my kid and was extreemly upset. So to get his mind off it I turned on the XBOX 360 and played it with him. Just a note I also bought the XBOX 360 from ebay and it broke a few weeks after I got it. Microsoft appoligized several times sent me a box to ship it back the next day and had a new one to me in days. That is service and I will always support there producs becouse they do. A lot of games that output 720p are scaled down to 480i instead of being upscaled to 1080i when the TV cant accept a 720p signal. Be smart and use the component outputs.
It looks better with the component anyways.

If I want all the stuff you mention then wouldn't I be better buying a PC which would totally kick the PS3's ass? There are a lot of sets that do 1080i but not 720p. I know it sounds stupid but a couple years ago, when HDTV was just getting populuar, there were all kinds of weird things going on.
I bought a 65" rear projection for my parents, same thing. The inputs on the back say 480i / 480p 540i 1080i, no 720p. This was a while ago and all they watch is a Comcast HD box which has 1080i and looks absolutely stunning.
My point is people who adopted the early sets are getting screwed.
Just for the record, I don't hate anything foreign, almost every piece of electronics in my house is Japanese except for my projector.
I don't have a noisy XBOX, I have a PS3 and unless you own one, you have no ideas of the issues with the console.
You have to press the power button for a few seconds to get the console to handshake with the TV. Once you do that, the optical audio output is automatically disabled.
Laslty, HDMI is a joke, it wasn't designed to give you a better picture. It was created to control things like DRM. Why do you think they are disabling 1080p on the component outputs and forcing you to go HDMI?
