PS3 Passes 1 Million Sales Mark in Japan

By BetaNews Staff, BetaNews

July 18, 2007, 4:06 PM

Sony's PlayStation 3 has passed the 1 million unit sales mark in Japan, game publisher Enterbrain reports. It took about eight months for the company to reach that mark, a half-year longer than it took competitor Nintendo to reach the same milestone. As of July 15, Sony sold 1.01 million PS3s, compared to 2.9 million Wii consoles being sold. Microsoft has sold 420,705 Xbox 360s in Japan.

Microsoft has always struggled to do well in the region, so its low sales numbers are not altogether surprising. However, Sony has always performed well in Asia, easily outselling its rivals. The PS3 has been on sale in the country since November 2006, with the Wii debuting the following month. The Xbox 360 has been available in Japan since December 2005.

Coming from the same guy who claimed he owned one three months before they launched in Europe. This is the most pathetic post so far.

It appears he has scaled back to only a select few usernames now. Still a complete "looser".

You can't go giving your objective opinion based on experience with all three systems. That doesn't fit the way Dave does things.

You need to move to a place that has no gaming systems or an HD-DVD / BD player, or an HDTV for that matter.

Then come back and spout nonsense and one sided propaganda based on nothing but fanboyism. You are totally screwing up the way we do things here, at least for some people.

You are supposed to give your opinion of the PS3 from a continent that is hadn't even launched in yet, claiming to be an owner and it's the best thing since prostitution.

"...In addition to 1m consoles sold, Hotshots Golf 5 has 300,000 preorders,, so you can add another 1/3rd million to those numbers in a few weeks time, when the game comes out."

This is faulty logic! How does one knows that these 300,000 preorders are from people who don't have the PS3 yet? What about people who have the system already? So, 300,000 more unit sold in a few weeks is indeed a very long stretch of reasoning. Or maybe there is no reasoning at all!!!

As for the game list, that is pretty weak for a new console and I will say PS3 is more advance but I would have still bought the XB360 just for the games it has. I will admit I need it to last 5 more months to make $400 wothwhile!

Indeed, no at least half-way sane person would preorder a game for a console he doesn't have, so with pretty much absolute certainty the preorders come from people who already have a PS3.

Besides that, I bet Hotshot Golf 5 will be just as shortlived as all the other overly hyped Sony ttiles - if you look at the MediaCreate charts, all of the oh-so-great titles dropped out of the charts the second week already.
Take for e.g. the super-duper Rpg FolkSong, which was supposed to be the end-all, be-all, but failed to even reach the Top10 and next week was gone already. Or take Nija Gaiden Sigma - short appearance, next week gone again. Same with My Summer Holidays, which didn't live to see a second week as well.
It will be no different with Hotshot Golf 5 - as soon as it drops from the charts the second week, all the Sony shills will instantly drop it and swarm to another title to hype it up as the best title ever.
Doing that must be really depressing... no wonder the Sony shills always sound so angry and frustrated when they post here.

The cost of the entire XBox enterprise (everything since 2000) comes to around $5 billion.
Microsoft made that (net) in Q1 of this year alone
(nevermind the other 7 years of large profits that actually paid for those costs as they went along).

Your (so obviously) longed for 'share holder anger' is far more likely to be happening with your heros over at Sony.

It is Sony that have posted profits that are tiny when compared and who have done nothing but miss original sales target after sales target.......to the point where they have had to lay people off of work.

I have seen many news articles stating that the loss of the POS3 is sucking up any profit that any of the other divisions have made. A company starts frowning whenever 1 division is eating up all their profits. Something drastic better happen with the POS3 or you can kiss it goodbye.

Also with the 360s excellent attach rate(which is better than the POS3 and Wii combined) it will not take long for them to make those losses back. Then add on the savings of switching to the 65nm chip.

Okay, so you Sony fanboys please explain to me how this works. Every month the Xbox 360 and the Wii both outsell the PS3. The Xbox 360 already has a huge lead over the PS3, yet it still outsells it every month even if it's by a small margin. The Wii is outselling the PS3 by a land slide. So, explain to me how the PS3 is catching up? The gap between the PS3 and the other two consoles is getting wider each month. I'm talking GLOBAL sales here, just in case you feel the urge to quote some random country where the PS3 happens to be doing okay. Not that there is many of those.

I know Steve or one of the other idiots will bring a bunch of random links to random meaningless sites, to show how amazingly well the PS3 is selling. Yes, they must've got a sales boost the last week or so, because of their fake price drop. But let's be honest here, it's been shown every month for the past 3 or 4 months that the Wii is selling the most consoles by far and even the 7 year old PS2 is outselling the PS3. How is it that more people still want the cheap 7 year old technology over this amazing new PS3?

I think I'll start following in the footsteps of the Sony zealots around here and start posting awesome links of my own! Here's one now. Enjoy the hilarity!

I own a PS3, I picked one up at Circuit City last weekend because of the price cut, 5 Blu-Ray movies, and Circuit City was throwing in a second Wireless controller for free. I managed to get the last unit at my Circuit City so they seem to be selling pretty well now.

Do I think the PS3 will beat the XBox360 or Wii in overall sales? Maybe in YEARS but certainly not anytime soon, but who really cares. A lot of people bought the original Xboxes. The orginal Xbox was OWNED by the PS2 in overall sales. Does that make eveyone who bought an Xbox stupid? No. There is room in the market for everyone, no one is going to go out of business (i.e. pull a Sega) as a result of this generation. Nintendo and Microsoft NEEDED to do well this generation or they probably would have left the market. I really don't see Sony abandoning the entire PS brand just because they aren't #1 in this generation. I have little doubt that the PS3 will turn an overall profit over it's entire production life and while Nintendo and MS might end up making far more that will just make Sony compete all the harder on the PS4 when the time comes.

Only if it were that simple.

"A lot of people bought the original Xboxes. The orginal Xbox was OWNED by the PS2 in overall sales. Does that make eveyone who bought an Xbox stupid? No."

Who called anyone stupid? I certainly didn't. I was simply pointing out the fact that all the Sony fanboys are delusional, because they think the PS3 is doing better than the other consoles. This is obviously not the case.

"There is room in the market for everyone, no one is going to go out of business (i.e. pull a Sega) as a result of this generation. Nintendo and Microsoft NEEDED to do well this generation or they probably would have left the market."

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Yes, Nintendo may have exited the console market if they didn't do well this generation. Microsoft, not a chance. Microsoft is a company who can afford to lose billions and it still won't hurt the company. Sony on the other hand is not in such a position. They're a much smaller company compared to Microsoft and posting a $3 billion dollar loss on the PS3 has shareholders worried. This is on top of all the other losses and PR Sony has been receiving lately. The rootkit fiasco and exploding batteries are still fresh in everyone's memory.

I'm sure the Sony cheerleaders will be quick to point out that Sony is doing well in other areas, such as LCD television. But those profits are being swallowed up by the gigantic losses from the PS3.

Also, if you're waiting for the PS4, don't hold your breath. Sony said they expect the PS3's life cycle to be at least 10 years, which is ridiculous of course. It's not even a year old and the hardware is already obsolete. This is how it goes in the console world.

I don't know what you are classifying as a "Sony fanboy". If Sony fanboys are only the delusional pro-Sony no matter what nuts then it's kind of redundant point out that people who you have specifically limited to those who are delusional... are in fact delusional. It's kind of like saying if we limit all games to RPG's then all games are RPGs.

If however you consider anyone who would willingly purchase a PS3 over a Xbox360 to be a Sony fanboy (and this is what I was assuming you meant in my first post) then I am a Sony fanboy by that definition because I bought a PS3 and have no intention of picking up an Xbox360. If I am Sony Fanboy though then your claim that "all the Sony fanboys are delusional, because they think the PS3 is doing better then the other consoles." is obviously not the case because as a Sony Fanboy, I do not think they are doing better. That was the point of my original post only I tried (unsuccessfully apparently) to convey the point in far less words.

I'm not convinced that MS would have stuck around if the Xbox360 had failed. Sure they are a much bigger company but the Xbox division just drags down the rest of the company. MS makes their money on OS and Office software primarily and there's only so long they would have stuck to a failing project. On the other hand the Playstation related parts of Sony are a MUCH bigger part of Sony's bottom line then Xbox will ever be at MS and so I don't see Sony exiting the market after just one console generation where it didn't take #1. It's doesn't really matter though because neither of us can prove either way what WOULD have happened had the Xbox360 failed because it didn't. It's doing quite well and so MS will certainly stay in the market for the foreseeable future now.

And I'm not WAITING for the PS4. I don't know where you got that from I already said I bought a PS3 and I happen to be very happy with it. As for the 10 years thing I don't know what is so difficult for you people to understand but when Sony says that they are referring to how long the console will be produced, NOT how long it will be before the next one comes out. Guess how long the PS1 was produced... 11 years... guess how long the PS2 has been produced... 7 years now and they JUST released a new hardware revision. It stands to reason that the PS2 will hit around 10 years also and so it's reasonable to assume the PS3 will likewise be manufactured for 10 years. That doesn't mean the PS4 won't come out several years before then just as the PS1 was still being made for years after the PS2 launch and the PS2 will still be made for years after the PS3 launch.

What's so funny about that? It's highly likely that the starter pack will be complemented by something with a bigger HDD.

Ultimately, who cares, the PS3 allows you to fit whatever HDD you want. The handbook shows you have to do it, and it does not void your warranty. A 160GB 2.5in SATA drive is $80.

I can think of one competing console, where they charge $120 for a 20GB HDD!!, and lock it down and make it proprietary.

Yes, and I can think of a console where they force their DRM infested HD format on you and it's a huge chunk of the console's price. Talk about choices.

I love how you picked one single sentence out of my comment and replied, completely ignoring the bigger part about the PS3 being out sold by every other console month after month. You're so funny. :)

A. That link was hilarious... It really goes to show what Sony thinks of the various geographic and demographic audiences they have. Simply amazing --> "You live in Europe sooooo, we're just gonna charge you the full price that those yanks over in the US can get cheaper. Deal with it"...

B. Steve doesn't have time to reply to entire posts; there are so many posts that he is completely wrong in that he has to reply to first just to defend his precious Sony.

I dare say that I would be 100% fair to both the MSFT and Sony camps, but messing with Steve just has way too much enjoyment attached to it.

And they have no real choice but to do that. You can complain about it all you want, but that is why 360 has TV show and movie downloads and PS3 does not.

Simply AMAZING what a $100 difference can do!

Granted, most will still spend that $100 on a game and some accessories, but ultimately that is what drives the console and where the money is made, in the Accessories and the Software (Games).

I remember working a retail store when the PS2 came out. We all remember it retailed for $200 and even that we thought was high. Well, my Employee price was $212 (No Typo, it was MORE), but the games that retailed for $50... Employee price on them was $9!

So weather you are in the market for a PS3 or not, I would say take advantage that it is now $499 or also look at it as the cheapest BLU-RAY Player on the Market.

gall damn the wii is almost at total world sales figures as the xbox 360 and that had a year headstart. I bet the wii would sell more if you could find them that is, I will buy one once I can actually find one. I can now find a ps3 and 360 on store shelves now with no desire to buy it.

The point is that the PS2 STILL outsells the PS3 daily, weekly, and monthly.

If the PS3 is so superior, how is it outsold STILL by a 7 year old system?

Basically the PS2 is solid proof that price is the absolute main factor. The average consumer does not know, nor do they care what "almighty" power the PS3 has.

the ps3 has been out for 6 months right? So...assuming PS3 sales don't fall (which they most likely continue to do as they have been)...in another 6 months it would be 2%, in 7 years...the PS3 would have sold 14% of what the PS2 sold...success!!

The Xbox 360 sales figures in Japan make me giggle.

Giggle at the Japanese mainly for their allegiance to their country's products.

They really are atrocious sales figures considering it's been out a year longer (roughly).

I love how Betanews try to put a negative spin on even positive Sony news.

In addition to 1m consoles sold, Hotshots Golf 5 has 300,000 preorders, so you can add another 1/3rd million to those numbers in a few weeks time, when the game comes out.

http://ps3.qj.net/Japane...-Golf-5/pg/49/aid/95099

Things are ramping up quickly in Japan it seems. It took them a while to warm to the PS3. The game lineup is quickly convincing people... Many of these are ONLY available on Playstation..

- Lair (PS3 Exclusive)
- Heavenly Sword (PS3 Exclusive)
- Unreal Tournament (PS3 Exclusive until May 2008)
- Haze (PS3 Exclusive)
- Killzone 2 (PS3 Exclusive)
- Final Fantasy XII (PS3 Exclusive)
- Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3 Exclusive)
- Little Big Planet (PS3 Exclusive)
- Uncharted Drake's Fortune (PS3 Exclusive)
- PES 7
- GTA 4
- Ratchet and Clank : Tools Of Destruction (PS3 Exclusive)
- Stranglehold
- GT5 : Prologue (PS3 Exclusive)
- Warhawk (PS3 Exclusive)
- Folklore (PS3 Exclusive)
- Call of Duty 4
- Rock Band
- Devil May Cry 4
- Assassin's creed (PS3 Exclusive until mid 2008)

I'm sure there are more, these are just the big hitters in the next 6-10 months.

Great logic you got going there Steve! Halo 3 has 2 million preorders...so add 2 million xbox 360 consoles to the current market share and widen the gap!

I would be very surprised if even 5% of those preorders are from people that don't already have a PS3.

That is like saying that the 360 is going to sell 2 million more units because that is how many are preordered Halo3. Not likely.

Will it help sales, yes but the numbers stated.

THe reality, is that 360 has gained some previous PS exclusives. PS3 has moved on, PS3 has NEW exclusives, plus the old ones on multi-plat.

*still laughing*

Lost some previous PS exclusives?! Well WTH do you think that happened there?! The PS3 has been such a flop so far game-wise (it's lackluster launch lineup didn't help much either). Most of the companies that were producing these exclusive titles had to cut bait and return to where the money was guaranteed. Attach rates mean the world to a game studio and if you ain't got 'em, you ain't got 'em. Guess what? Sony ain't got them with the PS3... Why do you think there are still game studios producing PS2 titles!?

PS3 has moved on... uhhh, yeah, there really is no other way to move, is there? What are they supposed to do, try and resurrect some old PS1 and PS2 games and call them exclusives?

PS3 has new exclusives... yeah, at double the cost to the dev houses and tons of fees that Sony had to pay to even get some of these developers to produce the "exclusive" games. Add to that the nightmare that Sony calls a SDK (of which is part of my nightmare right now) and you quickly start to see why these companies turned tail from Sony and all their legal BS and nearly impossible to develop for SDK.
