Philips to Repair 12,000 Plasma TVs

By the Betanews Staff | Published March 17, 2006, 11:15 AM

Philips Electronics said on Friday that nearly 12,000 plasma TVs it sold in the United States are vulnerable to overheating, and plans to visit customers' houses to replace the faulty component. Consumers will be contacted directly, and Philips declined to say how much the fix will cost the company.

A Philips spokesperson downplayed the seriousness of the problem, saying the move was simply a "precaution" and noted there is no fire risk. Only 42-inch and 50-inch sets sold in the United States are affected by the overheating. Plasma TVs have surged in popularity over the past year as prices have continued to fall, but production problems have plagued electronics companies trying to keep up with demand.

I actually have a 50" Philips plasma TV but I haven't taken it out of the box yet because I'm not finished with the TV room. Does anyone know what models are affected?

You might check the Philips web site, or call their customer support center.

Lucky you didn't open it. You should return it while the you can. Costco has a 50" Panasonic on sale $200 cheaper than the Phillips anyway, and the picture was much sharper on the Panny.

I'll be picking one up very soon after I finish comparison shopping.

Meh...

Considering maybe (big maybe) 1 or two BN readers here probably have one of these, I would be really suprised to see any kind of reaction to this here other than idle chatter.

Excepting, of course, dear rijp's ranting. ;)

Ya need to realize that the XBox was a much different beast due to the fact that many more BN subscribers had access to them or had spent their own hard-earned money on them.

The effects were broader, more public, and had a lot more personal affect on us. This likely affects maybe one or two of us...

You need a sense of proportion, here, rijp.

Well it may only affect 1 or 2, but its STILL representative of a bigger problem.

If this were a MS TV, you guys would be screaming its some sort of MS problem, and they should have fixed it by now.

But since its just a simple TV.. its no big deal, regardless if you have a Philips brand TV or not.

If it were an MS TV, more than one or 2 of us might actually own one. :P

But now I'm just arguing to argue....

This not only affects the people who own the product but it affects the Phillips share holders even if only mildly. Any news is news to affect their money and that is important to some people.

You don't have to read the wall street journal for info on your shares to be concerned, I use this site quite freqently to get info on stocks and whats up for its future.

OK, so come on people, where are those nay sayers when Microsoft Did this.. huh? Come on, prove you are not MS haters, and say the SAME things you did about the XBox 360.. come on, let me see those 400+ postings complaining that MS sucks and they knew well ahead, and how they should be sued.

Show the same vehemence when complaing about this that you did with Microsoft..

I already know, no one cares that OTHER companies have problems, but let it be Microsoft, and EVERYONE screams bloody murder.

They have known about this for awhile. Initially they were only going to repair models still on the showroom floor and those brought in for other repairs but apparently the heat got to them. My experience has been a nightmare. I purchased 50" 3 months ago today. First one delivered was smashed. Second one had a major malfunction. Been in shop 45 days switching out various parts to no avail. Can't get no satisfaction from them.
