Sony Preparing 80GB PlayStation 3

By the Betanews Staff | Published March 29, 2007, 10:59 AM

Regulatory filings indicate that Sony is planning to release a model of the PlayStation 3 that would include and 80GB hard drive in the near future. Due to changes within the Bluetooth module, the company was required to file an application to request permission to release it within the US with the FCC, which controls products that transmit or receive radio frequencies.

Sony is not commenting on the existence of the updated PS3, or whether the new model would replace one of the currently available consoles that come in 20GB and 60GB versions. Speculation is rife that the decision may have something to do with the current market conditions for HDDs, where smaller drives are becoming more expensive and mid-sized capacity drives continue to get cheaper.

Oh Boy... $799 Console!

What Sony should do is offer a PS3 WITHOUT a Hard Drive for $399. I can get a 120GB Laptop Drive for $100 or less.

Sony has made the drive user removable, so they are encouraging people to upgrade it themselves if the need warrants it.

Not sure where you pulled the $799 from... this version won't cost any more than the current model, same price in all likelyhood. As mentioned Sony are doing this, purely because 80GB HDD's are cheaper in bulk than 60GB HDD's

As for remvoving the HDD totally...

That would be a very foolish move by Sony, and won't happen, as it would cripple the ALL the PS3 versions in the same way the lack of HDD in the Core 360 cripples the way develoeprs can utilise the HDD in the premium models, and the reason why the 360 has never really taken major advantage of the HDD, because it's not standard..

I think Sony could easily sell a lower cost system without a HDD, as long as they stated cleary that a HDD would be REQUIRED to be purchased separately.

Cost would have to be reduced enough to make it worthwhile though.

Guys, relax. Joey nailed it. It's likely that the 80g drives are simply cheaper in bulk, given that manufacturers rarely get 60g or 80g to the shelf anymore. This is actually a parts move that will help sony. That's all.

So a FCC filing automatically means Sony will produce a 80GB version? Nope it MAY produce a 80GB version. This site gets worse and worse.

Either way, a 120GB PS3 HDD upgrade is less than $85

Unlikely, as IF they do release a 80GB unit, it's because 80GB drives are cheaper to buy in bulk than 60GB drives. It many even lower the price to the consumer (unlikely)

"Then why continue to visit the site". It's quite funny what the lame anto-Sony viral marketing train that Betanews is, throws up each day.. For example, the title here says that "Sony Preparing 80GB PlayStation 3". Making it sound like a product launch, or major revision. It's 20GB for christ sake, it would be newsworthy if it was "Sony Preparing 300GB PlayStation 3", this is nothing more than anti-PS3 FUD, timed to conincide with the Euro launch. "Let's break news of a new revison, to try and disuade consumers from buying PS3".

Perhaps the editors need to review a BALANCED story on this "news", to see what unbiased actually means.. http://www.gamesindustry...tent_page.php?aid=23890

Yeah, yeah, everyone who says anything negative about Sony is automatically anti-Sony. When it comes to Sony, there is no "balanced story" as you put it. What you really want is for BetaNews to only report positive news about Sony, anything else you would consider anti-Sony. Typical fanboy attitude.

People dislike Sony because of their continued arrogance, broken promises, missed release dates, outright lies, shoddy products, questionable ethics, etc. The list goes on. So get over it already. Sony is just one company, go find another one to worship.

KASHIN,
You got to admit though that this site does bash Sony and PS3 at every chance they get. Always quick to point out Sony's mistakes and flaws, but don't touch (or barely mentions) the positives or when problems are corrected. And when they do, it's brief and there is a spin.

Example: PS3 not backwards compatible story before the PAL launch, but no mention that it IS backwards compatible to 1000 plus titles.

Score: 0

|

So when a company promotes their product prior to launch as being 100% backwards compatible it is not justified to publish an article criticizing them because they, in fact, aren't?

They should instead forget the promised compatibility and laud them for getting over a thousand of them? Yeah...that wouldn't be seen as biased reporting at all.

Score: 0

|

Nobody said anything about not reporting it. It's news and should be reported. But BetaNews never said anything about it being partially compatible.

It becomes biased when they report it as NOT compatible (days before a major launch), and not report that it was discovered to be PARTIALLY compatible for 1000 plus games with a website to check what is and isnt.

Score: 0

|

Please show me where Sony claimed the PAL PS3 to be 100% backwards compatible.

They never even claimed the NTSC PS3 to be 100% backwards compatible...

The ONLY statement Sony ever released, was that PS2 and PS1 titles would work, as long as the Sony TRC requiremnts were adhered to when the original games were developed..

People like to spin the truth to whatever suits their argument, at least here they do...

Embarrasing stories like the PAL PS3 only supports 200 titles (when it's actually in excess of 2,700 PS2 and Playstation titles) is proof that news here is biased. The fact the article remained uncorrected for several days, and finally when there was no dispute even amonst the most avid Sony haters that the article was incorrect, it didn't even get a retraction notice or update post, simply a minor subtle edit to the article.. Fanyboys extreme..

Score: 0

|

While you are correct the original number was wrongly reported, at least they did update the article. However, you spin your own lies:

It is in no way 2,700 compatible games at the time the article was written, it was approx. 1,700 games listed with many duplications, and not all of them even at 3 star rating for compatibility. So you've managed to add 1000 titles on to your own number pretty quickly.

Impressive? No, I think we can see through your own cynicisms and defense for anyone criticizing Sony.

'People like to spin the truth to whatever suits their argument, at least here they do...'

Suits you too. Sony's spin obviously has convinced your reasoning also. Supporting 1700 games, does not mean all these games will work flawlessly, or even close to flawlessly.

to quote you, and then to somewhat embarrass your own misinformed comments:

'Embarrasing stories like the PAL PS3 only supports 200 titles (when it's actually in excess of 2,700 PS2 and Playstation titles)'

Here are the statistics for PS2 games, taken directly from the PS3 site
http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/bcGames.htm
and processed to remove the crap

1237 uniquely titled games / 1782 listed games

1 rated games: 295
2 rated games: 193
3 rated games: 798

The star rated figures do not 100% match the unquely titled figure: some games with the same title have different star ratings, I've included those twice as it's hard to say which rating they are meant to land under (I assume it's either different regions or game revisions).

If you meant to say PS1 and PS2, you'd be wrong there too. Here's a full breakdown I've done of every game listed on the website.

Here's what I did: counted the ~unique~ game titles, I've been generous and left in some with have (G) after them, not being completely sure what that means.

again, some games have two different rating scores for different game IDs, they have been counted in each category they are listed for for the star ratings. It only puts the unique and the star ratings added together off by about 5, so it isn't major :)

PS1 Stats:
1 star rated: 111
2 star rated: 199
3 star rated: 654

963 uniquely titled games / 997 listed games

PS2 Stats:
1 star rated: 295
2 star rated: 193
3 star rated: 798

1237 uniquely titled games / 1782 listed games

PS1 + PS2 Overall Compat Stats:
1 star rated: 406
2 star rated: 392
3 star rated: 1452

2200 uniquely titled games / 2779 listed games

Tell me again how saying "Sony Preparing 80GB Playstation 3" is anti-Sony? Do you even know what viral marketing is?

What would be a better title? "Word on the street is Sony has applied to be able to sell an 80GB Playstation 3 sometime in the future if they so choose as a way to reduce cost to consumers for their new next-generation gaming console that competes with the xbox 360, this message is not intended to disuade you from purchasing the current 20GB model of the PS3 and it is merely coincidence that it is appearing on BetaNews.com close to the European launch of Sony's next generation console"

Let's be honest, if they are applying for permission, they are going to sell it. Do you really think someone over at Sony was thinking "hey, we are not currently looking into this, but I think we should file for permission to sell an 80GB model of the PS3 with new Bluetooth module changes."

If they weren't planning on selling the 80GB model, they would have applied to sell a 20GB model with changes to the Bluetooth module. The hard drive size is irrelevant in this case.

That aside, I would like to point out that moving from a 20GB drive to an 80GB drive is quadrupling the amount of available space. I would say that is a fairly significant gain, even if only to save money on the parts by cheaper bulk prices.

Yes, and some say this is an MS fanboy site yet they post news on MS product flaws and patches on a regular basis.

It's like when people e-mail Bill O'Reilly and say it is obvious he's a liberal and the next e-mail says it is obvious he's a conservative.

You can't be both people! Sometimes you just report the news!

I don't understand how reporting the facts about the PS3 and Sony make it a bashing site? For gods sakes, this article is only about how they filed to be able to sell an 80GB model.

Should they write an article with this title: "YAY SONY! THEY SOLD 2 MILLION CONSOLES!" and make no mention of a benchmark that they said they would sell 6 million by such and such date? Not quoting real numbers here, just making an example. How many they have sold is irrelevant unless compared to benchmarks on competitors, previous consoles, and expected sales.

Yep, sorry I missed the 'and playstation' part, but what I said is still undisputed: the number 2700 still gets banded about, even broken down continue to be a lie by the Sony spin. It is a very odd 'fact'. I hoped the numbers would prove of benefit to anyone who actually wishes to see the real break down of things. Especially- 1,784 PS2 titles

Read the post again. Come up with another 500 titles listed on the BC website that aren't just duplicated title names. Some games are listed six times. For what? A few minor revisions? A different region code? All games are region encoded to stop import/export from other countries unless you mod the console in some way, so if it's the latter it's just something to push up the stats. It logically would make no sense to list them. If it's the former, a revision isn't a whole new game. It's some bug fixes.

In short, can you come up with another 500 names listed there that aren't just duplicated title names? Nope, you can't. Fair to say both sides are completely misrepresenting the numbers to look big and impressive.

But further, are you saying by that figure you're also counting 1 star rated games which work with major issues? Take out duplicate names, take out 1 star rated games which play with 'major issues', you're down to 900 for the PS2.

If anyone can counter those statistics, then all credit to you. But I highly doubt anyone can, yet people continue to defend it anyway. That's why I posted all those stats, and yet they're ignored anyway and the number 2700 springs back instantly by loyalists.

So what's your reason to defend these statistics, and the duplicated title names listed on the site boosting the figure up by 500, or the number including 1 star rated games?

hold on while I go write a PS1-3 emulator which can run every game with major issues, and I can spin the press to say it 'supports' all games released.

For the record, I don't have any nextgen console, or the previous generation back. Couldn't care less about owning them, but happy to cut though the journalistic crap on both sides.

It's safe to assume that you don't have a PS3, or have not played a 1* rated game.

I have, Crazy Taxi, and it's still very playable, a few minor graphical glitches.

Sony are doing themselves an injustice here, as even the worst emulated games are still quite good (assuming they are all similar faults to Crazy Taxi). So whilst there are 500 or so duplicates, It's still 2,200 titles (2,000 more then the 360) and a 1,200 more than Sony announced in the run up to Euro PS3 launch.

Expect that list to grow slightly, as some of the more popular un-emulated games get added (SSX and Gran Turismo 4), and the glitches get fixes that affect the 1* and 2* games. I would say it's safe to say most of the 1* will be promoted to 2*'s and some new additions in the next couple of firmware updates.

Score: 0

|

What you fail to realize again and again is Microsoft never once claimed all games would be 100% compatible that expectation was never set. Sony set that expectation and they have also stated working to get older games running better on the machine is the last thing they have in mind. They are more concerned with getting ps3 games to work. As the machine is still considered a failure they expected much more to sell but who knows what will happen in the coming months. I think sony got to overzealous and shouldn't have used such high hardware because its vastly underutilized. Its still early but if you see game manufacturers running to other systems it could be safe to say it may not recover but we will wait and see.
