Sony Quietly Delays Blu-ray Player Again

By Scott M. Fulton, III | Published October 20, 2006, 12:32 PM

As members of the AV Science Forum were the first to discover yesterday, Sony has once again pushed back its estimate of availability for its first wave of Blu-ray Disc player consoles, the BDP-S1.

According to the company's SonyStyle Web site, US customers should expect to see the player on December 4, with MSRP remaining set at $999.95 USD. The BDP-S1 had been slated for release next week.

As one member of the Forum put it, "Who here really believes that this is finally the real ship date?"

This latest delay is critical, particularly because many studios have BD-based movies already shrink-wrapped and ready to ship, although they've been basing their availability schedule on Sony's timetable. With this delay, the PlayStation 3 -- still scheduled for limited release in North America and Japan next month -- regains its position as the premiere vehicle for Sony-branded Blu-ray players.

The spotlight on PS3 as a Blu-ray player has dimmed a little, however, in the wake of competition which ended up beating Sony to market. While Pioneer's Elite line of BD players has been delayed until after the holiday season altogether (January at the earliest), Samsung's BDP-1000 and Panasonic's DMP-BD10 are now the only Blu-ray players at least relatively widely available in North America. Meanwhile, HD DVD players from Toshiba and others are reportedly already preparing for their second generation.

Besides being Blu-ray's principal architect, supporter and champion, Sony is one of the main suppliers of blue-laser diodes to BD component manufacturers, itself included. Problems with diode production are being blamed for shortages in already released Blu-ray components in Europe, as well as the delay of PS3's release there.

Yet although the blue laser diode used in Blu-ray is essentially the same, if not identical, to that used in HD DVD, since Sony may not be a major supplier of diodes to HD DVD manufacturers, they are apparently less impacted by these shortages. Still, HD DVD suppliers aren't immune to shortages, as evidenced as far back as last August, when component manufacturers throughout Asia stated they may be willing to "freeze competition" between HD DVD and Blu-ray until shortage issues could be ironed out.

DaveBG posted hid Google Fights link to compare HD-DVD and Blu-Ray but he left out the dash in HD-DVD to tip the results his way.

If you type the formats in properly the actual results are clear.

http://www.googlefight.c...D-DVD&word2=Blu-Ray

What a loser, he has to rig a site to make Blu-Ray look better than HD-DVD.

Once again DaveBG, you are screwed

I knew DaveBG would stick his big nose in this topic. The only people b****ing about either format are the early adopters that feel they got screwed because newer players are already coming out, some much later *cough* SONY, than others.

One of them is going away and this Christmas will be the dagger.

I will continue to post the link to www.thedvdwars.com because it's factual, there is nothing stronger than the truth. But people like DaveBG dont want to hear the truth, just that the format he chose is better.

The consumers have spoken so far, and BD is getting it's a** kicked in sales versus HD-DVD. I really don't care, I will buy both players if I have to but you can almost feel the tension in DaveBG's post because he refuses to believe that BD is way, way behind in sales.

I still feel the VC-1 codec, which Sony/BD has now switched to, is the better way to go. Hopefully BD will be free of the artifacts that plague the picture right now.

DaveBG must have spent his last $1000.00 dollars on a BD player and is now pissed because the format is failing, so far.

He knows I'm right, and I cant wait to see his reply.

again www.thedvdwars.com see the facts, don't listen to opinion.

Average sales rankings as of today (movies)

Blu-Ray = 5108
HD-DVD = 678

Thats no BS, right DaveBG?

If I was in charge of the next new thing in entertainment, I definitely would not have improved on an already existing technology. I would have skipped ahead and made a disc of glass of roughly hexagonal shape, about 2.5 inches across and .5 inches deep. It would store information using the positioning of two lasers focusing on bubbles within the three dimensional space of the glass. Hopefully the disc will attain the ability to store 1 terabyte of data.

Maybe this idea is CRAP. Please tell me if it is a good idea or not.

Never argue with an idiot, people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

Don't forget the need for a scratch resistant surface, and some shatterproofing. Oh, and if we want something writeable, the lasers will have to generate a significant amount of heat. Also, the reading lasers, or their beams at least, will need to be projected/read from multiple angles to determine where the bubbles are. (Don't forget the supercomputer needed to extract those bits from the scan data in realtime.)

BUILD YOUR OWN!!

Seriously. I recommend waiting for a suitable Blu-Ray video card (HDMI/HDCP) and player to become available at a reasonable price then build your own HTPC.

Once the ability to do this is available, better cases and motherboards optimized for this will be available. This will enable for a great deal of flexibility, quality should be at least as good as the best player and fixing it when necessary will be basic troubleshooting and replacement of off-the-shelf parts, most of which should drop in price.

You can also copy all your DVD's, compressed movies, MP3's etc to your local hard drive and have instant and remote access (via wirelss) to your entire collection. Hopefully a good Universal HTPC remote will materialize.

I will be building an HTPC instead of buying a standalone player.

(I'd love to see Sony put out a combo PS3version2/PC which comes basically as a PS3 but with PC expansion slots and a CPU slot.)

Tell us about your $1 per gallon gas equivalent hydrogen why not requiring additional energy inputs. Which, even if all of the farmland in the US were dedicated to it would, in its most efficient form, only product 12% of the required supply for gasoline substitute as ethanol - and that does not even include diesel needs. And as hydrogen produces LESS energy than is required to produce it, hydrogen production would lower those efficiencies even more.

I wonder if you can spell "stupidity" as well as you can illustrate the principle?

People do spout crap here. The diodes on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are different, The Numerical Aperture on Blu-Ray is higher, meaning it can focus on smaller surface pits, which means higher data density, thus 50GB instead of 30GB.

Just because the diode is blue, does not mean Blu-Ray and HD-DVD share the same laser diode..

As for Sony's shortage of BDP-S1, Because demand would have been low anyway, they should have just made 1000 units, and have availbility problems, rather than delaying, less bad press. Bad press is what Sony don't need at the moment...
