Sony Drops PS3 Price by $100

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

July 9, 2007, 10:07 AM

Despite comments to the contrary from the company president just a week ago, Sony on Monday cut the price of the 60GB PlayStation 3 by $100, while also introducing the 80GB version to North American consumers.

The announcement comes days before the annual E3 gaming event in Los Angeles, where competitor Microsoft may announce its own price cuts in response to Sony's moves. Nintendo, meanwhile, is widely expected to leave its own pricing untouched.

Analysts had been expecting a PS3 price cut from Sony for several months in light of the company's struggles in competing with the Wii and Xbox 360. However, in an interview with Reuters last week, company president Ryoji Chubachi said there were no plans to lower prices.

The change takes effect immediately and means the 60GB PS3 will run $499 USD. The new 80GB model will be introduced at $599 USD and include the game MotorStorm, but would not be available in the North American market until August.

"As we move into the next phase of PS3, it's important that we continue to evaluate our product line, offering consumers the technology and features that meet their growing needs for new forms of media and the way in which it is delivered," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA.

The company had already begun selling the 80GB model in South Korea as part of the launch of the console there. However, it had sought FCC approval for the device in the US, indicating an eventual launch here.

Even at its new price, the PS3 is still twice as expensive as the Wii, which is dramatically outselling it in every major market. It is also $20 more expensive than Microsoft's Xbox 360 Elite, which includes a 120GB hard drive as part of the package.

Sony says that about 120 new PS3 game titles will be released in this fiscal year, which ends next June. It expects the price drop to cause sales to "double at a minimum," although some analysts expect a more modest 50 percent increase.

JupiterResearch vice president Michael Gartenberg says the console industry is driven by games, an area the PS3 has had trouble with, which makes new titles equally as important as any price cut.

"PS3 has not garnered the same success as prior versions. Sony faces Microsoft who has made the most of a one year head start in launch, as well as un-expected consumer interest in demand for the Wii. At the same time, Blu-Ray has not become a major purchase driver while the inclusion of the technology in all PS3s has forced Sony to keep the purchase price relatively high," he said.

"While price is still the prime purchase driver for consumers, game consoles are still fundamentally about games first and foremost," Gartenberg added. "As each vendors lineup is revealed later this week, we will have a better chance to asses how well each player will do this fall."

£50/$100?

I reckon too little & too late.

Of course there will be a small spurt in sales as those waiting on this cut come to buy but my bet is it'll not be long until the sales numbers drop off of that very steep cliff again.

.....and this petty refusal to make this a global cut in one swoop (who doesn't imagine it won't happen everywhere eventually?) does nothing but pi*s off potential customers in other territories.

It's the worst of all worlds, another short rush then more poor sales and a return to higher losses on each unit.

Poor Sony, awwwwwwwww.

This trojan horse for their grossly anti-consumer BD system can't fall flat on it's face fast enough for me.

Amazon is hardly a good source to get how sales have increased.

Because the Playstation 3 was hot at launch and look what happen after people figure out what the real deal was.

I know somebody who owns a Playstation 3, it doesn't get played, yet he owns a ton of Nintendo Wii games.

This is one person I understand, and were both in a our mid-20's so its not like we enjoy the Disney Movie games.

I think time will tell if Playstation 3 is doing well is you can go into a store and NOT pick one up. If that happens then Playstation 3 is going to do well, but lets face it Gamecube did well and everyone makes fun of that system.

From what I have seen sales for the PS3 have gone through the roof, here is a bit of the info. FYI

For those of you who have been thinking about picking up a Sony PS3 but were a little sticky on the price tag, Sony has just dropped the $599 60GB version by $100. That puts the PS3 at $499. You can read more at CNN and Video Business. Some in the industry expect that Microsoft may drop the price of their Xbox 360 in response. Not surprisingly, sales at Amazon of the PS3 are up 2800% today (according to Amazon's Movers and Shakers list).

1. Controller
2. Live Service
3. Abundance of good FPS

Everything else is mute. This is a "game" console after all. I already have a media center PC thank you.

But that dual shock controller severely irks me. I didn't like it on the PS, PS2 and now I don't like it on the PS3.

Also the PS3 is more of a RPG oriented console which I am not really in to.

I'll buy a game on the 360 before the PS3 for this reason alone. I love FPS on the PC but have a hard time with a controler aiming. I wish MS would support a mouse. I agree about live and the controller.

I am looking into why both my 360 and Denon reciever failed at the same time. I think I am having some sort of a power issue. I refuse to buy anything from Monster so their stuff is out as far as a power conditioners goes.

THAT!!! is part of my point, if you have $599 in your pocket, you know you can do a lot more benefit from it like giving it to your mom or heck give it to charity!!! but damn, spending that money just to smash a piece of electronic device? lol, that is crazy. In case you didn't give some thinking to my point is that he's taking his situation for granted, an object is an object, it comes and it goes...but if you're in a situation where you can do A LOT MORE IN LIFE!! with your money, I consider that taking it for granted. Giving a child a game console is not for the sole purpose of "here, sit on your a** and play all day long boy!", its about making him happy, it doesn't mean he will have his life spoiled by that. Yes...I agree with you, $599 could be a nice investment into sports equipment, if I had $599 and don't see the need for it?...If I don't see the need for for a PS3?, I'll buy a soccer ball, a uniform, and some gear for that boy and get him enrolled into what could possibly be his other interest, because most certainly I don't think video games is the only interest in a child, or was it for you?

They did this with the Wii, the 360, the PS3, the iPod, and they are probably going to do it with more things.
The guy didn't pay for it, all of these things were fully supported by donations.

The whole thing is supposed to get people to lighten up, but these have gotten even more people pissed off about these videos, which is why they have "flamer" sections on each of the smashmy________.com websites.

And I like how the website that's biased towards MS says that they don't expect the PS3 do get any more than 50% higher sales and nowhere near twice as many sales.
But you look what happened when the PSP dropped $30 dollars, which is less of a percent than the PS3's price was dropped, and those sales doubled when there is low consumer faith in the product, and when Nintendo is the undisputed leader in handheld gaming.
And here's Sony, the leader for the past two generations, each with well over 100 million sold, dropping the price by $100.

If you're smart, you can get a PS3 for less than a 360 anyway...

http://www.sonystyle.com...151&ddkey=ClickInfo

Get a SonyStyle card, buy a game from amazon, then buy a PS3, and get $100 refund on it.. Pay balance, cancel card...

Trailertrash with 360 and bad credit history need not apply..

I think you mean "If you're smart". The word "your" denotes possession, as in "your dog" or "your house", etc. If you're going to go around insulting people, at least make sure you have a fair understanding of the English language.

Anyway, let's just wait a couple of months. I'm willing to bet the Wii will still outsell the PS3 at least 5 to 1, even after this price cut.

Just last week they announced they had no intentions of dropping the price of the PS3 in the near future. Typical Sony, always misleading their consumers and the media. Most of us are rather use to Sony covering up and flat out lying about anything negative relating to their company and products, but now they're lying about the positive too? And people wonder why Sony is so hated.

Still nice try...

Yes, companies stay quiet about price cuts. They avoid making public statements. Not every company's president goes ON RECORD a week before the price drop, telling everyone the OPPOSITE. That's only Sony. Do you think Bill Gates would announce to the world there would be no Xbox 360 price cuts and then cut prices the next week? I think not. There is a world of difference between keeping your mouth shut about a price cut and flat out LYING to everyone about it, just to mislead your consumers and your competition.

Nice try though Benjamin. Why don't you go set your PS3 controller on vibrate and put it down your pants, since you love Sony so much? Wait, did mommy and daddy even buy you a PS3 yet?

They didn't go on record as such, they were pushed into a corner by the media as a result of the CircuitCity and Target flyers, to make a statement.

Let's also not forget this story blew up on a weekend, and the official party line, before it blew up, was "no price drop", with the official intention to announce it at E3. The fact this official was sticking to the party line, was unfortunate, as the evidence to show otherwise was irrefutable, but by Monday morning the pressure was too great, to not announce it before E3.

Sony did what all companies do. If they say, "hey we are going to cut the price by $100 in two weeks", no one in their right mind would buy one until then.

You can bash Sony for many things, but i really do not see how you can for this.

If they aren't clones then they know each other in some way. The reason being if you look at all the new names and look at the style of each post by the newbies, they do tend to be remarkably similar as well as using the exact same obscure links that someone would have to dig for quite some time to find.

I hate to say this, IDIOT!!!

Wii is for a different market, buying a 360 is paying for a major difference in system horsepower, not to mention it isn't limited in storage by NAND flash and kiddy games.

I like the Wii, but you're drop-dead stupid for saying that.

What exactly would you say is _not_ a kiddie game?

Anyhow, if having the most horsepower is your thing, you would have a PS3 and not a XBox 360.

That game is pretty good kind of stolen from a game on Live but still good none the less.

I have had a PS3 from launch how many times do I have to tell you that? The PSN network still sucks when compared to live. Don't give me the crap of it being over priced or any of that nonsense. I'm shocked you even mention that game since it's not on your beloved blo-ray disk. So a high tech system with a small download kind of negates the need for the massive storage of blu-ray.

I am amazed at how you claim that blu-ray is needed for games yet rave about a downloaded game. This proves that the storage of blu is not needed for a fun game.

I will agree that the game is fun but a rip off of what is on live. If you can't beat them join them I guess.

Some games suit download, small amounts of sprites, textures, level data etc, These are games Like SuperStardust HD, Then there are other games, Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo is over a GB alone (1/8th of a DVD). There is no way the full game will fit on a DVD.

GTA5 and MGS4 are both too big to fit on single layer Blu-Ray, and need the fullly leaded 50GB disks...

You original comment implied that all PS3 games are big inaccessible games, and there are no "pickup and play" Wii style games, which is clearly wrong, the PS3 does these kinda games too.

That is not what I mean some people have claimed that blu-ray is required for a quality game and that is not true. Large amounts of data is used by video not game data. Funny how a game like Oblivion fits just fine on a DVD and looks great. FMV does not make a game. If I recall the reviews say Ninja Gaiden was out on the original XBOX too with some added stuff but still the same game for the PS3.

There is a comparison between the Ninja Gaiden on the 360 and the PS3, and they are worlds apart, I think it's on IGN. Similar gameplay, that's about it. The PS3 version spanks it (but to be fair the 360 version is now quite old).

If anyone thinks the PS3 does not have that arcade walk up and play aspect, try SuperstardustHD in 1080p and prepare for jaw drop time. The best $8 I ever spent...
