Sony: No Price Cuts for PS3 Planned
by Ed Oswald
Forget about a price cut for the PlayStation 3 in the near future. Sony's president Ryoji Chubachi said the company currently has no plans to reduce the price of the console in an interview with Reuters.
Analysts had long been speculating that the company would cut the price of the PS3 by at least $100 to become more competitive here in the US. At a price tag of $599, it is $200 more expensive that the premium Xbox 360, and $120 more expensive than the Xbox 360 Elite.
Price cuts were seen as the key to alleviate those concerns and propel the PS3 to the top of the heap like its predecessors enjoyed in previous generations.
"If you take a look at how PlayStation and PlayStation 2 have taken off, this is not such an unusual start," he argued. However, at the same time, the gaming industry has grown substantially since those consoles, so comparisons with them may not necessarily be accurate.
The financial markets are also increasingly losing confidence in the Japanese electronics maker. Last week, Nintendo replaced Sony as one of the company's 10 most valuable companies based on market capitalization.

Selling a product at a huge loss is NOT GOOD, yeah you might get the product, but when the product becomes unsupported because its not profitable then its bad.
An example would be this really really horrible U3 Flash Drive I bought. It was a great price, does everything I want, except work with Vista. Sure I purchased it before Vista and instead of supporting it the company just ended its life cycle.
I am not going to say that will happen to Sony but unless Sony starts to make a profit on the Playstation 3 and GIVE developers what they need to make great products.
Well lets just say Playstation 3 will be like the DODO Bird.

Micro$oft is still loosing money on every 360 sold and look at how long that has been out. And now, they are going to have to shell out ~$1 billion USD to deal with all the defective systems.
This is an incorrect statement Microsoft is making a profit on Xbox 360s and they have been for awhile now. Granted its like only about $20 but thats still a profit.
But in general they have lost money cause they increased the warrenty period for a huge cost ot them.

Don't worry, many products sell at a loss. It's a common practise, called "Loss Leader".
This is how it works. They sell the hardware at a loss, but make the money back in the long run, via PS3 game sales, and Blu-Ray movies sales.
The problem is, when you are someone like Toshiba, who is spending massive amounts of money keeping HD DVD afloat (hardware costs $550, sells for $300, and they are paying considerable amounts of money to Universal to stay exclusive), but they have no returns to get that cash back, They get nothing for movie sales on the HD DVD format, and there are no games or the like to generate returns...

I agree with you on the first part about making money on games and addons, however you are grasping at straws on the HD part. I was for once going along with you until that point.
I still believe that the majority of people could care less about the blu-ray player. I believe that most don't want to pay a premium for a system that has something that they are not even remotely interested in. I think an addon would have been a better option for the consumer. People here are supporters of blu-ray so they want to the drive. Don't ignore that fact that most 90 some percent of the popluation don't give a crap about HD anything, accept maybe their TV.

Despite denials, Sony has made official the new $499 price point for the PlayStation 3 that we've started to see appear in retailers across the US. The 60GB model's new price point will indeed be $499, with a new 80GB model going on sale for $599 in the US and Canada in August. As a small bonus, the 80GB version will include a "free" copy of MotorStorm. So there ya' have it kids: in one quick swoop, Sony has made the PS3's price a whole lot more competitive.

The current price of $599 is an excellent deal considering you're getting a Blu-Ray movie player with full support for all high definition audio formats including DTS HD Master that can also play video games. This is easily the best Blu-Ray movie player on the market. If Blu-Ray movies had both high quality sound (Dolby Digital Plus or better) and equal picture quality to HD-DVD I would buy a PS3 in a heartbeat.

"Sony Computer Entertainment America ("SCEA") warrants to the original purchaser that the PS3™ hardware shall be free from material defects in material and workmanship for a period of 90 days from the original date of purchase (the "Warranty Period")."
Also read this -
"Yesterday we were tipped off by an employee of a major publisher who claimed that the Sony PS3 failure rate—at least within his studio—has been much higher than Sony has stated failure rates to be (around 1-1.5%). The employee suggested that the failure rates were actually as high as 10-25% among the 300 or so consoles they received. He also noted that Sony Online Entertainment's Q-Bert seemed to be making the problem worse, with many of the consoles getting much hotter than usual."
That is too funny. Hollywood is right again as usual. PS3 failure rates are just slightly higher than that of the 360.

First it was a loss of well over $300.00...... now $400.00 per console? This move stinks of desperation. Like I said, Christmas of 2007 will be the end of the PS3 console. There should be about 15-20 million Wii's out there by then.
It's obvious that the Wii is the clear winner here as it actually generates revenue with every sale, the 360 has done very well in game and peripheral sales. Then there's the PS3 with an attach rate that is the lowest in the industry, a substandard BD player and over $400.00 lost with every console sold.

Microsoft could 'pay' for an entire XBox 'enterprise' out of the profits from every quarter.

Write XBox/XBox 360 off as a failure if you like but you're under-estimating the venture, it's one designed to last several generations....

Please, keep it up, you Sony shills & drones have been hilarious in the last few days.
The truth is the PS3 is failing to meet it's sales projections (so much so they - rather unusually - publicly admitted this).
S'funny how a brief rebuttal of those absurd 'XBox is such a drain on Microsoft' comments is now a "rant".
LMFAO.
You guys, hilarious.
Keep taking the meds.

"investors are becoming increasingly more restless as the gaming division continues to cut into the company's successes in other divisions.""
Ouch!
Surely they coulda just wheeled in some of the expert Sony drones/shills we have here who'd have told them all about how great the PS3 is doing, especially at this point in it's life cycles compared to the XBox360 & the Wii blah blah blah......if nothing else it woulda bored them to tears so bad they'd have been only too happy to escape the 'meeting'.
.....course all that kinda ignores the fact the bankers & financier types aren't interested in that kind of ludicrous garbage tho.
They're more concerned with people leading them up the garden path, promising profits on their investments and in fact returning them losses on the balance sheet.
Nevermind, perhaps they're all in Toshiba or Microsoft's pockets too......or they hate Sony or they're XBot fanboys.
LMFAO.
Too funny.
