Sony announces in-house video game lineup

Looking to keep up the current string of positive news, Sony on Friday detailed its game lineup for the rest of the year and into 2009.

Part of the announcement also revolved around games intended to take advantage of the PlayStation Network, Sony's online gaming service. While the service is said to have eight million registered users, it still is seen by many as inferior to Xbox Live.

Sony's own studios plan to release at least 15 games during the period, including several highly anticipated titles which it hopes will help the console catch up to its competitors in sales.

"For the second half of 2008 and beyond, we will see a spectacular line up of triple-A titles and original gaming content that will satisfy PlayStation fans across the board," SCEA's marketing chief Scott Steinberg said in a statement.

According to NPD, Sony has only sold about 4.1 million consoles in the US as of March, compared with 8.8 million for the Wii and 10 million for Microsoft's Xbox 360. Part of the criticism against the PS3 has always been the gaming selection.

The PS3 titles announced Friday include SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation, the oft-previewed LittleBigPlanet, NBA 09 (also releasing for the PS2 and PSP), MotorStorm Pacific Rift, and the highly anticipated Killzone 2.

Several PlayStation Network titles are also en route: wipEout HD, PixelJunk, and Siren: Blood Curse. The PSP will not be forgotten, with Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 and Secret Agent Clank are slated for release later this year.

If the game charts are any indication, Sony may need a little in-house help to jumpstart video game sales for its brand. Data for the month of March -- before Grand Theft Auto shipped -- showed that the best a PS3 game could do was 10th (Army of Two), while the Wii had three games in the top ten, and the Xbox 360 had five.

I think these numbers speak for themselves. The Failstation 3 is still a lame duck.

Gears of War, The Halo series, the Fable series, Mass Effect, Too Human, Crackdown, Even GTA is going to have addons that the PS3 isn't going to have.

And I can't forget Bioshock. :)

QUESTION: What exclusives does the 360 have that are a must own?

I owned the system for about a month before trading it for the PS3. At the time, Gears of War was the only thing worth playing.

I only ask because the NO GAMES argument gets thrown around a lot but 360 games titles are never mentioned.

"What exclusives does the 360 have that are a must own?"

Good question. From the point I can see, Microsoft won't want lots of exclusive titles on the xbox. They've worked really hard to allow games to be created on both the 360 and PC with very little changes to the code.
As Microsoft owns both the XBOX 360 platform and for the most part, the PC platform (via Windows) when it comes to games it wouldn't make sense for them not to release games from the XBOX 360 on the PC and PC games on the XBOX 360.

Well as hellcat mentions above its also the addons that extend these games lifespand.
360 titles always get mentioned in that no games argument, not sure what forums you discuss this in :) It's generally always the ps3 games that people forget to mention.

There's no real games that blows the other system out of the water. There really isnt a valid reason to drop a ps3 for a 360 or a 360 for a ps3. People that say this (especially after a month..) really need to ask themselves if they had a soft spot for one or the other, its clear they do.

Don't get me wrong, I am a Sony fan and I do own a PS2, PS3 and PSP, but this is not a "Line Up". It's more like 5 games over 3 Systems.

If they were 15 completely Different Titles, I would be more impressed.

This is literally like 5-7 games spread over 3 different systems for the most part.

It sounds more like Sony is replying on BLU-RAY Movies to carry them this year.

Singstar- I never heard of, sounds like another rock band wanna be, but probably playind disco crap.
SOCOM- is ok, but I've always liked the Tom Clancy shooters better, they have a better feel to me.
LittleBigPlanet- sounds interesting, but only because it also allows you to build content, I never really liked side scrollers.
NBA 09- is probably going to be like NBA 08 and 07.
BUZZ never- heard of it
MotorStorm- Never heard of it
Resistance 2- I played part of it on my friends PS3 it was ok, but Gears of War was better.
Killzone 2- It better be better than 1 because 1 didn't impress me.

I'll probably play Metal Gear Solid on my friends PS3. Otherwise with the game linup I'm not impressed. The 360 lineup sounds so much better.

Plus I see it this way Sony is still making PS2 games because the PS3 games are failing. They may have had a hit with GTA4 but so did MS. The PS3 hasn't had a real hit with an exclusive game yet. MGS will probably be its biggest selling game, and thats just because MGS has been on a PS since the begining. Sony hasn't picked a huge exclusive hit in ages. MS has had several huge hits and they just keep picking them.

Depending what one you buy the music can range from the 80's, 90's, Rock, etc. Some of the artists in SingStar have appeared in Rock Band including, but not limited to Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age, Ramones, The Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeah, etc. SingStar have a variety based of genres it tries to carry. Still prefer Rock band, but just so you know. (See full track lists at:

I still remain to be "WOW'd" by this game line up. Sure i may have been anticipating Kill Zone 2 until Gears 2 was announced.
These are just mediocre in comparison.

Congrats Sony... if this is what you figure will help you sell more consoles keep dreaming.

Too bad I don't have your imagination with numbers I'd be making more money every month.

The question I would love to pose to you would be "When will you finally understand that your not going to sell consoles until finally you have an epiphany and realize game superiority is what sells them and posing bogus number and projections won't entice your investors or produce new ones?"

Yeah, that's why they have only sold 4.1 million consoles so far. You have to remember that for the first year of the 360, you couldn't walk into a store and even find one let alone buy one. So take your delusions elswhere fanboy. I love the games that are available for the 360, I was even planning to buy a PS3 for Fatal Frame 4, but that is going to be Wii exclusive now (I guess it is a good thing I have a Wii also). Saves me a lot of money and disappointment I think. If you prefer Killzone or Resistance to anything that is offered on 360, more power to you, enjoy your puchases and by all means have a good time with it. Just don't act like a 5 year-old and try to bash others preferences just for the sake of being a jerk.
