Sony pulls PS3 update after some gamers report bricked systems
by Tim Conneally
Just hours after making it publicly available, Sony has pulled the PlayStation 3's latest firmware download (v2.40) due to reports of inoperable consoles after the update process.
SCEA's director of Corporate Communication and Social Media, Patrick Seybold, played down the problem, saying that incoming calls regarding failures have been of a low volume, and the removal is only temporary.
The worst outcome that several users have reported is a PS3 that simply does not boot after upgrading. One user said, "I tried to update to v. 2.40 this morning. Probably around 10:30 or 11:00 PST. It rebooted and left me hanging on the screen with the squiggly wave lines. It did not make it to the XMB. Upon calling Sony, I unplugged the machine. I plugged it back in. I restarted it. I held down the power button until it turned red again. Then I repowered the machine. Now I don't even get to the wavy squiggly line screen. I just get a black screen." Several other users reported the same.
The firmware update added several notable features, most prominent of which is the ability to access the XMB operating system screen while playing PS3 software. It also added an Internet search command that does not first require an open browser, and a new "trophy collection," which lists all the user's objective-based trophies collected from games which support that feature.
Some users who reported successful installs, however, report issues with these new features, claiming that attempts to access the XMB in-game or check their trophy collection both result in frozen systems -- but nothing as serious and incurable as a bricked PS3.
Sony has said it is "working diligently to isolate the problem...and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up." In the meantime, some users have taken the matter into their own hands, removing and reformatting their PS3 drives at the expense of their previously saved games.
I like this post and I agree sony is reducing prices on the ps3 and i bought 1 knowing thier system is far far far far more reliable than the 360. my friend had to send his 360 to microsoft 2 times in 4 months. RED RING OF DEATH!!! both times.
Microsoft dont belong in the console market they have no business there.
They just saw it as a market they don't own.
As for xbox live they still think they own the internet and feel people should pay them for the right to use it. Total BS. I will never spend 1 red cent on anything they make. Now they are talking about making a handheld because the psp and the ds are cleaning up that goes to show u another market they don't own and they just cant deal with that!

You're arguments are weak as gameplay is everything and fancy graphics mean nothing if the game sucks.
By the way, Burnout Paradise looks much smoother on the 360 than the PS3, as I can A/B them to compare the graphics. The PS3 version reminds me of those old Namco arcade games with the badly shaded polygons with severely jagged edges.
Other PS3 games look fantastic, as long as there are curved edges. The PS3 does not render straight lines worth a s*** at any angle. I laughed when I saw MGS4. The power lines in the intro literally were the worst case of jaggies I have ever seen on a so called top end gaming machine. This was after about ten minutes of loading time.
A lot of things looked god awful in that glorified hide and seek game.

You must not know how to google, it's a wonder how you found this site. Here are the facts ONCE AND FOR ALL Why PS3 is better than 360:
Processor: xenon (360) 3 cores @ 3.2 GHz
the cell (PS3) 7 cores @ 3.2 GHz
PS3 Has a much stronger processor
GPU: xenos gpu (360) 500 MHz & 48 pixal pipelines
reality synthesizer (PS3) 550 MHz & 24 pixal pipelines
xenos is slightly more powerful than the synthesizer, BUT what the true gamers will tell you( as I am about to now) games rely on cpu much more than gpu.
Hard Drive: 20 GB NOT upgradable only 13 GB available (360)
60 GB SATA 2.5 " HDD FULLY UPGRADABLE (PS3)
This makes the PS3 HDD 47 GB bigger and reads ALOT faster because of serial ATA technologies.(bobthegoat should stay on the farm and leave the computer specs to us city folk)
RAM : XBox 360 features 512 mb RAM All of which can be accessed buy the cpu & the gpu. The RAM is clocked at 700 MHz.
The PS3 RAM is split into 2 RAMs. CPU RAM & GPU RAM, which both add up to 512mb. THE GPU RAM is clocked @ 1.3 GHz, that's nearly TWICE as fast as the 360 RAM. The CPU RAM is clocked @ 3.2 GHz The GPU can borrow RAM for the cpu.
The 360 ram doesn't stand a chance against the PS3 ram.
USB Ports
XBox 360 has 3 USB ports, 2 in the front 1 in the back.
The pS3 has 6 USB ports 4 in the front of the console.
PS3 is again the winner here.
Reliability:
10,000 XBox 360s get sent in each week to MICROSOFTS repair center. The XBox 360 has a failure rate of more than 33%. MICROSOFTS response" but but it's cheaper"
The PS3 has a failure rate of 0.2%. This means that the PS3 is 150 times more reliable than the XBox 360.
More features better than the 360:
1. Far more reliable than Xbox 360. No red-ring of death failures that must be sent off for a fortnight to repair.
2. Blu-ray is going to win the next generation format. The PS3 has the cheapest blu-ray player that your going to get.
3. WiFi built in. No more Ethernet cables across the room. Excellent browser - watch youtube videos, check and print email and play Macromedia Flash games.
4. Your PS3 has another cool party trick – use your PS3 as a phone to call your friends who are logged on via your Bluetooth headset.
5. PSOne and PS2 backward compatibility + PSP connectivity, file and multimedia sharing over WiFi.
6. Six-axis. Motion sensor wireless controller. Also comes with a free USB cable to charge.
7) High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) 1080p and Digital Audio. Superb graphics and audio on games, that holds up to 4x more data than other game discs.
8. PS3 exclusives: Metal Gear Solid 4, Genji: Days of the Blade, Final Fantasy XIII, God of War 3, Heavenly Sword, Kill Zone 2, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.
9. SATA hard disk drive. You can choose any SATA hard drive instead of having to buy one from Sony. MS charges 200+ just for 120GB hard disk.
10. Distributed research making use of the PS3’s CELL Processor. When you’re not playing games, why not put it to good use and help find a cure for diseases. (folding@home)
10. Don’t have to spend 75 + a year just to play against someone online.

Hey newyorksabre fanboy,
First of all, Live is only $49 a year and PSN sucks a bag of crap.
The 120GB 360 costs less than an 80GB PS3 and comes with a 2 year warranty.
The numbers don't mean s*** if you can't tell the difference between the two system while you are actually playing (both of which I own).
The PS3 controller feels so light and cheap compared to the 360, I can't stand even holding in my hands.
The PS3 has to do some monster download to update games all the time, which really sucks.
I'll take the 360 over the PS3 any day, even with all it's faults like RROD, which mine just came back from (brand new console with a manufactured date of June 2008 with a free black wirelees controller and free 12 month XBOX Live card, plus a letter of apology).
Sony would never do this to please thier customers.
My PS3 is a fantastic BD player and that's pretty much it.
By the way, hockey is for beer drinking white trash low life racist hillbillies.

In regards to the 360's hdd.
First of all, the reason there are only 13gb available AT FIRST, is due to the fact that there are videos and at least one game (Hexic HD) pre-loaded. All of which can be deleted by the user if they want.
Secondly, the hdd can be upgraded, either with the official 120gb hdd, or thru certain hacks.
Third: do you really consider Sony's hdd to be that much of an advantage, when you take into account the installs that a good number of games require? Oblivion took up a nice little chunk of my available space, and didn't load any faster than it did on my 360...go figure...
On to your 'bullet points':
1. Redundant point. You used it before in your diatribe.
2. A little late to the party. Blu won the next-gen format war a few months ago. Unremarkably, it remains a niche market.
3. To use a quote of yours from earlier: "BUT what the true gamers will tell you..." Wi-fi can be quite laggy when playing games across it. Decent browser, but I have a computer for those things, so I consider it to be a push.
4. I have a cell phone...using my PS3 to make a call seems more than a little bit like overkill.
5. Backwards compatability depends on which model you have.
6. The six axis sensor did wonders for Lair, didn't it. The controller feels way too light, and the motion sensors seem like more of a gimmick than an actual feature.
7. Here's a secret for ya: HDMI is NOT required for a hd picture...only 1080p. Component cables will transfer a very nice 1080i picture (which is more than enough for a good chunk of the hd tv owners out there). Furthermore, HDMI allows for more DRM. BTW, the 360 has HDMI, now, as well.
8. 3 of the games you list haven't even been released, yet.
9. Redundant arguement.
10. For the first year it was out, the PS3 didn't have that many worthwhile games. Folding@home was one of the few reasons (for many) to even turn their PS3 on...
10 (part 2 apparently). Live costs $49 a year...to play online. Otherwise, it can be accessed for free; with the user paying for things that he/she downloads. While I prefer the PSN store to 360s marketplace, Live makes the PSN look like a fart in a hurricane.
Most reviewers will state that the 360 and PS3 versions of a game are very comparable. All those numbers don't mean S$%T when considering that the majority of people want to do one thing...play a game. Both consoles cater to that, and it kind of makes either's superiority a wash.

The 360 has HDMI and Digital Audio too. So far it looks like the developers have done fine with a quarter of the space of BR too. Look at The Orange Box. It includes Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Team Fortess 2 and Portal all in one (1) DVD.
Just to be clear, more space doesn't mean better graphics if the graphics chip can't handle more. As you can see with my other link that the graphics for the PS3 don't look much better (if at all).
"Don’t have to spend 75 + a year just to play against someone online."
That's another lie. And you act like you know how to use Google. It's $49.99 per year. Or $43.99 and free shipping (for 13 months) if your order from Buy.com

That's what Sony gets for using a GPU that PC gamers had been using for almost a year before the Xbox 360 was released.
Don't get me wrong... I've always been a huge nVidia fan (except for a couple of months after they scooped up 3dfx, which was painful for me to deal with since I was a bigger 3dfx fan). However, there are limits to what a GPU that is 3 years old can accomplish (especially at HD resolutions) compared to ATI's more advanced offering in the Xbox 360.
The PS3 zealots will apparently believe what they want to believe... they always have. The simple truth of the matter is that the Xenos GPU is basically an ATI R600, which is the GPU that their HD 2900 cards were built around. Those cards were released to compete with (and in some cases wipe the floor with) nVidia's 8800-series cards, which were much more advanced than their own 7800- and 7900-series.
As advanced and impressive as the PS3 is supposed to be, Sony's GPU choice has been a head-scratcher for quite some time. And yet, the fanboys prattle on and on about how the PS3 will still be relevant 5-10 years from now from a gaming perspective. That's hysterical...

Typical Sony response. They never EVER take responsibility for anything, no matter how badly they screw up. They always try to shift the blame to someone else or pretend there was no problem in the first place. Say what you will about Microsoft, but at least when there was a problem with the Xbox360, they stepped up and extended everyone's warranty and offered to fix the problem. It would take a class action lawsuit against Sony to get them to do something like that. In fact, this is what happened with the PS2's faulty laser assembly. Sony had to lose a class action lawsuit before they would fix the problem.

Ummm...you do remember how long MS was spouting their 'vocal minority' nonsense, in regards to hardware problems, before offering up the LIMITED warranty extension, right? (Hint: over a year). How about the fact that when they extended the warranty, they left quite a few users holding their pud, since it didn't cover any of the dvd drive problems (drives that couldn't read 360 games, scratched discs, etc.)
I'm not going to say that there isn't an issue with this particular firmware update, but it seems that every time a firmware update comes out (for either console) there are people who b**** that it messed up their machine.
Anyone who remembers my rants from the BR/HD DVD 'war' knows that I'm not a Sony fanboy, in any aspect; but give them a little credit where it's due. When they found out there was an issue with the firmware update (regardless of how many were affected), they pulled it.

Ah well...I guess before making any improvements to their online system, they need to get someone to release a game that's actually going to be worth playing online. :)

Another screw up by Sony. This update includes support for upscaling, which I assume includes deinterlacing of 1080i video, on Blu-Ray discs (BD-R and BD-RE) but NOT for commercial stamped Blu-Ray movie discs. Considering nearly every set top Blu-Ray player supports deinterlacing 1080i video on commercial Blu-Ray discs before passing it on to the TV, I'm surprised that the Playstation 3 STILL can't do this basic task. It doesn't take an expensive Silicon Optix Reon or Realta video processor to do this properly. The deinterlacing of 1080i video can easily be done in software on the PS3's Cell processor.

Yountmj, you must NOT remember the last update for Xbox 360 when it crashed tens of thousands of Xbox live servers leaving gamers stranded over the new year weekend, only to promise to comp a free game in which I nor anyone I know ever received.
Score: 0
Yeah except the update didn't brick the console it only prevented online play, the console itself continued to play games and not lose save data and you know not just flash a black screen at you.
Keep reaching though...

Ok, new patch re-released after only a day, go figure. Again the support from Sony is far better than Microsoft. I have both by the way ( 360 & PS3) so I can not feel your pain terminalx or any other one dimensional gamers who continue to hate on the best gaming system in the world. PS3 outmatches 360 in every single way and will continue to do so for the next 10 years. It's funny how these broke ppl who consider themselves educated in the gaming industry could try and down play the best graphics, gameplay, and most importantly HARDWARE for the 360 that comes in a far SECOND. You can reach all you want but you'll never have the money to find out.
P.S. If you want to lose to me some more, why don't you send me an invite on the 360's greatest game out C.O.D.4. That's if you can afford Xbox Live.

I'll reply to both of you here...
Yountmj: Not always. During the first year of MS's seasonal updates, there were quite a few forum users who complained of problems after doing the updates. Since it was during MS's 'head in the sand' timeframe (in regards to the RROD), there really isn't any way to know if these consoles were getting ready to have a problem, or if it was the update itself causing it.
Sabre: If you and your friends didn't get the free game, you really didn't try. MS offered up Undertow as a free download, for Live's downtime.

Wow, did you even read what I said at all your comment has absolutely NOTHING to do with what I said. The update bricked the console who cares if they rereleased it Sony still hasn't said how to fix the ones who are bricked. That's it but since you want to go on some tirade about nothing, here we go...
For someone who states they own both you praise the ps3 above and beyond. You would realize they both have their faults and neither of them are better then the other.
I'll never have the money to find out? What are you, twelve? I don't have a 360 which makes your post even more humorous and I do own a ps3 and a wii. I'll own the 360 when the 60 gb hdd comes out.
The only thing that the ps3 has better is the cell and a larger medium and even that is reaching as of now its still not doing anything the xbox can't do.
Rofl at afford xbox live its $50 dollars a year - a kid working minimum wage could afford it.

The PS3 is so far that all the games look the same when compared side by side. metal gear has nothing that the 360 can not do. the PS3 may and this a big may be slightly better but not the monster differnce you make it out to be.
It's also nice that you resort to insults too. Grow up.

"PS3 outmatches 360 in every single way ..."
What about:
- Games: The 360 has more
- Higher Rated Games: Check any game review site and compare both 360 and PS3 top rated games and see witch has more
- Users Online: 360 wins again
- Game Loading: Guess which one loads faster. Plus you don't have to wait 20 minutes (literally!) for the game to install 5gbs. And even after the install, you only gain 2 seconds over the 360. So much for the 40gbs (that would be upto 8 games the PS3 would be able to hold with these manditory installs).
Those are just ones I can think of off the top of my head. There's probabaly more.
"and most importantly HARDWARE for the 360 that comes in a far SECOND."
Graphics Comparison
I don't see any difference. Actually in some cases the 360 looks better. Have fun explaining this one.

It's always a pleasure to serve you the facts about software and hardware. Please feel free to bow down to the PS3.
Oh don't forget I'll also own you on your Xbox 360.

Facts? My a$$. Maybe YOU should learn how to use Google.
"Hard Drive: 20 GB NOT upgradable only 13 GB available (360)"
You just contridicted yourself. Here's what you said, "MS charges 200+ just for 120GB hard disk." Not to mention it was never that much. Let me hold your hand and help you with Google. "Current Xbox 360 owners who don't feel the need for HDMI but still want increased storage space have this option available for a retail price of $179." -IGN.com
Not to mention you can use an external HD if you want more space.
"60 GB SATA 2.5 " HDD FULLY UPGRADABLE (PS3)
This makes the PS3 HDD 47 GB bigger and reads ALOT faster because of serial ATA technologies."
Here, I'll help you, "The custom 2.5" hard drive is connected through a SATA interface".
"Processor: xenon (360) 3 cores @ 3.2 GHz... "
And with all that goobly gop, I still play my 360 more. Want to know why? One simple word, 'Games'. Not to mention the Online is better on the 360 too. And like I said before I don't have to wait 20 minutes for it to install the game.
"USB Ports"
So what? I have 4 wireless controllers that don't need USB.
"Blu-ray is going to win the next generation format."
I don't buy movies, so I don't care about BR. I do rent DVD's though, and if I want to see it in HD, I can download it from Xbox Live Marketplace without any extra hardware.
"WiFi built in."
Yeah, but it's not required. Eithernet is faster and more reliable anyway. I can use my 360 as a Media Center Extender and watch my HD TV shows that I recorded with my HTPC. Wifi isn't fast enough if it's too far away from the router.
"use your PS3 as a phone"
OH MY GAWD!!!1!one!!! That's amazing!!!!! Or I could just use my cell phone.
"PSOne and PS2"
That's what my PSone, PS2 and Xbox [one] are for, which I haven't played for months.
"PSP connectivity, file and multimedia sharing over WiFi"
I could do that without a PS3.
"Six-axis"
Oh joy. A Nintendo Wii copy. Not very many games use this feature either, let alone put good use for it [Lair!].
"(HDMI) 1080p and Digital Audio. Superb graphics and audio on games, that holds up to 4x more data than other game discs."
Thank you, come again.

That one through ten list there is lame.
1. Blu ray player drives failing costs $150 360 red ring free.
2. You don't need no stinking blu ray to make games.
3. You don't need wifi to play online. The ethernet port works just fine.
4. Wow you can call someone again whippy. 360 has an onlie that is superior in just about every way.
5. I thought the newer PS3 are not backwards compatible.
6. The six axis is a rushed idea since nothing uses it well at all.
7. I thought the 360 has HDMI.
8. Exclusives every console has them. Both have good ones so big deal.
9. SATA is nice but not really needed. If it is faster you need to be since you need to have masive installs because the soon to fail blu ray drive is so damn slow.
10. Folding how ever a good idea sadly won't do much. Go ahead and think it will if it makes you sleep better. How about being green and stop wasting electricity with that oven.
Oh yeah forgot about the failure rates you mentioned. Yes there was a problem and yes they (MS) is fixing it for free. Sony had t be taken to court on previous consoles before they helped out. Then most didn't even know about the suit not sure how that one happened.
Face both are good system with their pros and cons. But no you would rather drink the Sony kool-aide and say that the PS3 is the best thing on earth.
you can spin your architecture stats how ever you like but the person that you responded to is correct with what he posted.
USB ports not that is an important thing. I guess I'll run out and buy an other PS3 since it has more USB ports.

Actually, an A-B comparison between the 360 and PS3 links for each in-game capture show quite a noticeable difference in quality... most seriously in favor of the 360's GPU (big surprise there). :)
The textures on the building bricks and cobblestones on the ground in Assassin's Creed on the 360 look much more detailed than the PS3 version.
Thank you for that link.

Everyone who doesnt have a pair of Sony or Microsoft sunnies can see that no console is clearly better than the other.
So for all that more powerful hardware the ps3 has according to you, it's seriously under performing. Is that a firmware fix?

I have one question. Why does SONY have to be put under the microscope when it makes a simple, little mistake?
Microsoft made VISTA the worst OS I have ever used in my opinion. Which also had/has lots of problems. And lets not forget all those unhappy 360 users with the "Red Ring" or what ever its called.
So for all you PS3 haters out there, think about all the f-ups Microsoft has had and cutt Sony some slack.

Probably because Sony put malware on people's personal and business systems. They will forevermore be criticized for everything they do. And rightly so. A truly evil corporation.

Because everyone puts MS under the microscope. Bricked systems btw is not a "little" mistake.

Hi, you must be new to the internet or just have to find a way to troll this topic and bring up the tired RROD of issue. (we get it its there yet people still continue to buy it, so go figure)
Vista is your opinion the worst OS, there are a lot of people that like it and a lot who hate it. There is also a lot of people that like the new version of OSX and a lot hate that too. This may surprise you but there are a lot of people that like CHEESE and some do not OMG!
MS has been getting criticized for every tiny thing they do since they became a monopoly. Vista while they did screw up on it still gets flack for issues that have been fixed but thanks to people who go on reading what it was like when it first came out it continues to be the scapegoat.
Sony has screwed up quite a lot starting back to playstation one and continuing forward, their customer service is a joke but unfortunately this happens with most large companies, even APPLE has told its customers to get bent.
You should probably avoid posting in the future as you honestly believe this is Sony's only blunder, they have had plenty but you know don't let blinding facts keep you from believing that "awww poor Sony, they are being picked on" wasn't warranted to begin with.
Before you also go assuming (as most fanboys do) I own a PS3 a wii and will own a 360 in September - all consoles have their good and bad points, use what you want but don't go thinking Sony is some poor defenseless child who never does anything wrong, ever.
