Sony says PS3 outselling Xbox 360 in Europe

Sony is touting European sales figures which have surpassed those of Microsoft, even though the Xbox 360 was released some 16 months before the PS3.

About five million PS3's have been sold in the region, with the console consistently outselling the Xbox on a month-by-month basis since October of last year. The news is somewhat shocking, considering the significant lead time Microsoft enjoyed.

Worldwide, the console had sold about 12 million consoles, the company said.

Microsoft had a price advantage over Sony as well. In the UK, the PS3 retails for £299 -- almost double the £159 entry point for the Xbox 360. Analysts credit the PS3's broad appeal for its success.

Whereas the Xbox 360 is targeted more towards adult males, many argue the PS3 has a far broader appeal. Microsoft's strategy presumably does not play well in European markets.

Sony isn't giving up on the US market yet, even though it has a greater distance to cover to outsell the 360. At a company event in London Tuesday announcing the PS3's victory, Kaz Hirai said it expected to be similarly competitive in two to three years in the US market.

Some people will buy a PS3 just to fill empty place of "third" console (if they don't have a Wii). :)

I wouldn't sheer away from the article just because the title makes it sound like this was a Sony-produced statistic. From the article itself it seems that Sony is merely bragging about how great the PS3 is doing according to "European sales figures" (it would be nice to see some sources in the article every now and then, to be honest).

They wont supply outside sources numbers as they will show that although there may be some increase there is no ground to be gained on world wide numbers. North American numbers are still low.

Are you using a hard wired ethernet on a console that has wireless built in? You should have read the box or done your homework before you post.

Evidently online problems still occuring if the playstation forums are to believed.
Patch fixed some gamespy issues but not others.
People will have to wait a bit longer

well of course the ps3 is out sellin the xbox in europe its a much much much better peice of hardware we all know this, and with us europeans been totaly unbiased we can make a conscious and informed decision, i do own both consoles and i have to say that as a machine the ps3 is better in everyway, bar slightly better online play that you have to pay for anyway and a few games that dont realy interest me i cant see any reason someone wud buy a xbox 360 over a ps3

As a few sensible people have noted the phrase "Sony says......" is probably all the warning anyone needs here.

XBox 360 sales have skyrocketed after the recent price cut.

If You're really interested I'd wait for an independent report.

I wouldn't trust Sony to ever tell the unvarnished truth about themselves.

Unless you count blu-ray being the broader reason to own a P$3, then I don't think the P$3 has a broader appeal. The people who buy P$3 are P$ fanboys like pitdungo, and they are a lot of person in Europe. More importantly, the same argument that japanese don't buy american stuffs work with Europeans. They don't buy american stuffs (especially the axis countries of WWII) except in UK.

I have to disagree reptile. I have freind who buys insanely expensive items like DynAudio Evidence Temptation speakers, $1000 interconnects etc....

He has the most expensive stand alone BD player money can buy and admitted the PS3 outperforms it with the latest firmware update.

If you are ever going to invest in BD, the PS3 is the best choice. Who knew that DaveBG would be right about anything.

At the time he was ranting, the PS3 still had problems and no dts-HD or MA, now it does, plus BD-J and extremely good black levels.

They actually got thier s*** together and I can admit I was (eventually) wrong. I still think the 360 is a better and well thought out gaming console. I don't have a problem plagued first gen however, I have an Elite that I bought at Halo 3 launch.

My older non HDMI 360 is collecting dust in my back room where old electronics go to retire. Luckily, I got an overbuilt, overpriced 80GB that cost Sony $309 more to build than I paid for it.

Thats the point and probably why anytime you see a post like this from sony you call BS right away. The fact of the matter is I am a gammer played on both consoles and MS got it 100% right. From desktop to actual ingame menus its user friendly. IF only they would realize, but then take it in baby steps eh.. i guess they finally gave into rumble tech and paid MS off for this and maybe we will speak this in with an update in the future.

Whenever you see a headline that starts with "Sony says" you have to take the information within with a grain of salt. Sony hasn't exactly won any truth telling contest in recent years. I could go down a long list of "Sony says" things just from the past 5 years that were complete BS, but I don't think anyone has enough time to read it all.

If Sony says they sold 12 million PS3s, chances are they haven't even broken the 10 million mark yet. Either way, they have no chance of catching up to the Wii or even the Xbox 360. The 360 is getting close to 20 million units now, so you can "tout" your regional sales figures (Sony really likes to compare themselves to Microsoft on home turf Japan especially) all you want, it doesn't mean anything.

Sony got a little too used to being the leader in the video game industry and now they're BAAAAAWing about being a distant turd, erm, third behind Nintendo and Microsoft. Expect more of these announcements every few months where Sony pretends they're winning the console war. It's like the saying goes, if you can't be successful at least try to fake it.

SOny says alot of things. THe POS3 i have is sitting collecting dust while i Play GTA4 on my xbox. Maybe in the fall if i can tear myself away from Gears i may look at killzone but wouldn't count on it. Gain as much ground as you need in the console war your loosing out because of the games. The blo ray player helped you sell them. w/o this you probably would have 1/3rd of the sales.

Same here...I must say the PS3 is an absolute pro at collecting dust. It and my subwoofer(glass top) are the biggest dust collectors in the house. It looks like a printer shaped sand dune!

I rarely turned mine on for over a year and bought exactly 0 games. It came with Blades of Glory on BD. Then Sony recenty released the firmware update that added all the 2.0 features to the BD player and dramtically enhanced the black levels out of the HDMI (v2.3?).

It is now the best looking HD player and SD upscaler in my home. The HD-A2 walked all over the PS3 in black levels for a while. I can plainly see the difference, especially on my projector.

The PS3 not all bad you know, mine is a movie player first, game console second. I still use mine to play PS2 games and an occasional PS game.

If you get the chance to see Cars on BD with the latest firmware, you will be amazed. The in-movie car finder game actually works too.

Sure I rent the occasional movie. It came with Spider Man 3 and that failed to ohh and awe me. I also have an HD Player and find richer colours in 300 or better yet Transformers. I find on my DLP that the HD player still does a better job at displaying the picture than the POS3. Don't get me wrong Sony got a couple things right with this console but I still perfer my Xbox for playability and game content.

Just so you know jeffrey, that's a really bad idea. I don't think anyone will care in here but if you post a video on YouTube and your gamertag is shown on screen, MS will ban you from XBOX Live for life.

There is something in the agreement that states you aren't allowed to post it publicly. They have a whole team of insects scouring youtube posts just for this purpose.

Secondly, if you are the kind of person who likes to stir the s***storm (like myself), the last thing I would do is share my tag with people in a forum who could report you on Live just for spite.

By the way, mine is not Hollywood__ but if someone owns it, you can complain all you want.

Actually, the guy who owns Sony Defense Force owns Microsoft Defense Force and 1up.

He's not stupid, the sites are extremey biased on purpose to create controversy and ultimately popup ad click throughs.

Dingo has been getting his a** kicked trying to convince everyone here the Wii is the best console money can buy. He needed a new reason to bash the "M$" 360, so why not pretend to own a PS3 to piss off the 360 fans.

The problem was he didn't know the 40GB he claimed to buy had wireless built in (and neither did I). His story began to fall apart when he claimed to have bought a 360, then sold it because he was afraid green smoke would burn his house down.

Now he's grasping at straws and posting things like "Time to get back to GTA4 on my brand new PS3" blah blah blah. It's very entertaining.

I'll shut up if he does it. I want to see his copy GTA4 in the picture and the Dell monitor it's hooked up to.

Apparently the PS3 has a 15 pin VGA port I don't know about or his Dell 26" has an HDMI input. This is why I asked for the model number but we should plainly see the PS3 menu or GTA4 running on the monitor.

If you toned down the crazy MS hate talk, I'm sure people would be a lot nicer to you. If you like inciting massive flame posts, keep doing it, I wouldn't change for anybody either.

The PS3 may well be outselling the 360 now. But I bought my 360 when it came out... and I bought a PS3 a few weeks back. Does that mean, effectively, a no sale? Does the fact I own both mean that my PS3 sale DOESN'T count? I'm confused...
