Every time I read about the PSP trying to be an entertainment system, I remember the SEGA GameGear. *That* was an advanced console. You could even watch the TV (not a recorded video) with a cardtridge, and that was 15 years ago and the screen had 4096 colours already.

I really see this new announcement as just a way to make the user spend more money. Sell PlayTV, sell the service to have PlayTV, sell the Go! service, and from a device we were just getting money from selling games, now we get a monthly fee.

There is no damage taking place, either on the wireless adapter or the PC. They simply require a little more power than other USB devices. Perhaps people should look to their PCs and other attached peripherals for problems. Mine works just fine.

It seems not. The tuner (which is HD, i'm afraid to say), will pickup SD and HD freeview terestrial transmissions, NOT CONTROLLED BY SONY.

Whilst there are currenty no HD terestrial stations in the UK (Satellite TV being the only HD option), the UK is moving to entiely digital transmissions by 2010 (commencing next year), the move to digital frees up bandwidth, and allows loads of HD content to be streamed free.

Most people couldn't tell the difference between 720 and 1080.

I think cablevision charges me $4/month and the DVR was free.

I can see a bright future, recording fta digital TV is very popular these days. It would even perhaps save many people from downloading them if they can record them easily themselves. 740p is too high. The PS3 couldn't handle such resolutions. It's 720p.

Yep all Xbox 360's do with component (though not all TV's support it, but it's possible) and through the VGA adapter.

Though what's it matter to you anyway, you own a 42" 720p TV anyway.

Problem is nobody is going to pay a subscription to use their **""GAME""** console as a DVR, whenever they can get one built into their receiver and pay $5 a month to rent the receiver.

If you don't have a DVR it is not hard, nor expensive to get one from your satellite provider. It will also be a much easier set up then going through the hassle of using your console.

Just because YOU think they won't be HD (depsite the specs saying so, and despite the PS3 being the only true HD console on the market right now), does not make it untrue.

If they charge a subscription fee for the DVR service (like Tivo), I can see them selling the unit at a huge loss and making up for it with those fees; just like the "software seller" PS3.

However...Sony can only afford to lose money for so long. They are losing money in almost all their devisions...their investors need to see profit, and proposing another money losing hardware venture will probably not go over very well with them. They aren't a not for profit you know...they're not going to make a hardware device and sell it at a loss just because "they really want it to sell"...they need to make money on these things at some point. This is an addon, not a software seller like the PS3 is, they need to make money on it.

But either way, I still don't see it as being very usefull considering all the already available (much cheaper and probably more functional) DVR's, not only built in to cable/satellite boxes but the almighty Tivo that still is arguably the best DVR on the market....it's just too bad that it's a seperate box and not built in like the old directivo deal.

Then consider this:

The PS3 is still the cheapest Blu-Ray player you can buy, and playing Blu-Ray movies is only a secondary function. Sony has taken massive losses on all their consoles. I don't see why this add-on would be any different if they really want it to sell. With all that Sony is doing to push Blu-Ray and hi-def, I very seriously doubt an add-on like this wouldn't be HD.

Problem is...if you have an HDTV...you probably have digital cable or satellite...or fios right? If you have one of those...chances are you have a DVR, if you have a DVR, chances are it's already an HD DVR...so, I guess if you REALLY wanted a sony DVR, now's your chance to get one!

But it'll cost you 500-600$'s + whatever they decide to charge for the addon. I think tivo just released their $300 hd dvr.

I haven't commented on the add-ons being a disaster before, but think about this:

HD-DVD add-on useful to the ones who know and want HD at the moment (currently totalling 1%-ish). They need to have an HD TV.

Standard definition PVR: Useful to most as it is being marketed greatly in the EU at the moment as an excellent solution to recording TV. Plus everyone already has a TV that it's compatible with.

That is a good idea since they can't make a game worth playing for the PS3, might as well use it for something else.

Yes it is a great system, I love mine. It takes space that could be used for something else. I keep hoping that something worth playing would come yet nothing has. Two exclusive titles Lair and Warhawk got a pass or medicore review. The wonderful tilt felt like it was added as an afterthought. Two hugely anticipated exclusives and they stink. To most of the blow hards here that means it is no good, bad, or avoid. You still may not be able to understand as people here praise PS3 games that for teh most part stink. Oh did you try BioShock yet? Oh yeah 360 and PC only and a 9.7 out of 10, oh well.

One more thing I didn't buy a PS3 to play PS2 games. I actually have a PS2 to do that, go figure.

Then there is the blu-ray player. Some call it reference quality I truly hope not as there are issues with piture and souund reproduction that are far from referece quality.

People go on about 1080p yet most games are still programed for 740p why is that? Picture quality is not that much better than the 360 if at all. I was looking at the Sony basketball game and Oblivion and noticed that the games require gigs of hard drive space just to play. No wonder the system shiped with a large drive, the BD drive is to slow so it runs from the hard drive. At least that is the way it would appear by the massive amounts of drive space needed just to play some of the games.

Anyway that is enough for now.

Almost forgot an online experience that is truly lacking. You pay for the 360 online and what a difference. Online that is easy to use and works as advertised.

Too little too late IMO. The 360 has great games NOW and will continue to have more great games in the future to go right along side $ony's. $ony is trying to play catch up, which is an extremely difficult thing to do in the gaming industry. Just look at the PS2 vs Xbox.

I have been playing games since the 2600 was the hot system to have, and things have not changed since then. If your not #1 its hard to convince software companies to make games for your system (let alone exclusives) Its a downward spiral.

Yeah, you described me. I'm just a college student with basic analog cable. No DVR in sight, and I'm certainly not going to pay extra for one.

My roommate has a PS3, and it's *really* grown on me the last month or so. As an entertainment center, it's outstanding. Blu-Ray movies and Up-sampled DVDs are unbelievable. The games look amazing, and online play is smooth as glass.

I dunno...I just don't see myself using a ps3 as a DVR..my DVR works pretty well already and it's built into my cable box....and I'm sure it won't touch Tivo's UI (I still miss tivo:( ). But...I guess if your cable/satellite/phone company doesn't already offer a built in DVR with their tuners (which just about all of them do now) and you don't have or don't like tivo...I guess a PS3 is a good expensive alternative. :)
