Sony to Demo 82-Inch LCD at CES

While some say otherwise, Sony is placing its bets that bigger is, in fact, better when it shows off a new LCD television at CES 2006 in January. The company has developed an 82-inch display, which will further prove that TFT displays can reach sizes attained by plasma and rear-projection televisions.

Japanese daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun first reported on Sony's plans, but no other details of the TV have been announced. Samsung introduced a similar 82-inch behemoth at CeBIT in March, which boasted 1920x1080 pixels and 1080p HD support. Sony actually worked with Samsung on that TV, and is now ready to demo one of its own.

The Xbox360 won't display on an 82 inch display. As a rule of thumb, I don't buy TVs that are taller than me, so I'll have to pass. If Sony knew what was good for them, they would focus more on building life size robots than on silly TVs. It has been prophecized that by the year 2027 every home will have a robot slave person type thing for entertainment and chores. Whoever grabs this market early on will not only make thousands of dollars, but will eventually control all of mankind - sort of like The Matrix and I-Robot.

Am I the only one who can see the $$$ in this? Weather proof it and set it up like a billboard on the side of a busy road with a lot of rush hour traffic. Don't forget to pay off.. err.. get a license from the city. Sell the advertising space to local companies. With the prices of DVR and computer equipment it'd be an easy setup and you'll make bank.

They now make much cheaper screens on paper, fabric, just about any pliable / moldable material-- maybe that'll be the future of billboards?

82 inch is FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR too big.

I'm happy with my 15inch TV (I think it's 15 :P... It's about 30cm anyway :P)...

If you look in any gaming console manual, it recommends sitting as far as possible from it and using the smallest TV possible.

LCD's don't use picture tubes and don't emit radiation(or at least very much harmful stuff).

TV's with picture tubes emit X-Rays or something.

I agree, 82 inches is way too huge(for something with so little DPI). I think the only use for such a TV would be sitting 25 feet away. Perfect for the rich man's home theatre in his 8000sq ft home.

CRT's don't emit harmful radiation. They haven't done this since monochrome monitors started becoming available for the original IBM PC computer. As for game consoles, the instruction manuals for the Sony Playstation and Playstation 2 don't make any recommendations for screen size.

No radiation, but you will always have the flicker that is bad for eyesight.

Size matters, but physical size produces more blurry and lower quality results(unless you're massively far away).

Pixel count matters. I think you're a fool if you want a HUGE TV since you're watching lower quality than you have to.

If they can deliver on this and maintain leadership it might be the start of a bit of a comeback since their trinitons started losing sales.

So hmm. 82 inches of LCD Goodness? At what price though?

Do I have to wear a DRM helmet to watch it? Hey they want me to install malware in my computer to play music. So a DRM helmet aint that far fetched.

Damn, sony is just the punchline of every single post. They are the new punching bag of the net community. I never thought I would see the day that someone other than microsoft held the crown of Internet Punching bag.

Another new addition to the Sony LCD line; when connected to your computer, the screen automatically installs malware to be sure you aren't using it to watch pirated movies....
