Spring 2006 PS3 Release in Doubt
By Ed Oswald | Published January 17, 2006, 5:21 PM
The release of Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 3 may not occur in the U.S. until the holiday season of 2006, analysts say. Furthermore, in what could be potentially damaging to the gaming console's overall sales, the number of titles available may be far less than competitor Xbox 360.
A working version of the console was notably absent at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, and Sony CEO Howard Stringer left any mention of the PS3 out of his keynote address. A non-working model was displayed behind glass, and only non-playable demos of games were shown at Sony's booth.
The lack of any public comments from Sony regarding the console has led some gaming industry analysts to speculate that the company may miss its spring 2006 target it announced at E3 2005.
Such a miss could become the big story of this year's E3 conference, to be held May 9-12 in Los Angeles.
Expectations as to when the PS3 will launch varies from source to source. According to MarketWatch, William Drewry of Credit Suisse First Boston said a decision to delay had not been made and would be dependent on the ramping up of production of the Cell microprocessor jointly developed between Sony, IBM and Toshiba. He speculated a one to two month delay on the console's launch.
Another analyst, Evan Wilson of Pacific Crest Securities, said a Japan launch would occur during the summer, followed by a U.S. launch in November and European launch in March of next year.
Wilson went even further to say he expected a "weaker" game lineup for the 2006 holiday season.
If such a launch schedule were to be used, Microsoft could have far more Xbox 360s on the market by Christmas, while the PS3 would just begin shipping to retail outlets. Gamers who couldn't find a PS3 may opt for the far more available Microsoft console, analysts speculate.
Microsoft has said it is on track to sell 4.5 to 5 million consoles in its first six months of launch.
A delay of the PS3 could have effects on Sony's business elsewhere. Supporters of Blu-ray, the Sony created next-generation DVD format, are quick to point out a flood of the new PlayStation in consumers' hands would give the format an advantage over HD DVD.
These same analysts also say that Sony faces a problem of cost; if it prices the console too high, gamers could scoff and opt for competing consoles at a much lower price. Some project the PS3 could run over $400 for just a basic version, a full $100 more than the core Xbox 360.
After hearing the lame excuses and cutdowns for the ps3 i think im going to buy an xbox360.
No! Dont worry diehards, the ps3 isnt going to kill the xbox360 so quit pissin your pants.

|So, does this mean that Microsoft will release Halo 3 for XBOX 360 any earlier? I read that they were going to wait for the PS3 release date so that Halo 3 would release during the same week (presumably Spring 2006 prior to this news), in order to take away from Sony's launch excitement.
Knowing MS, if this news about Sony is true, and that the PS3 will be delayed for quite some time, I would guess they'd wait until Holiday 2006 to release Halo 3 in order to generate holiday shopping excitement. I hope they prove me wrong and release earlier, so I then have a reason to buy the new machine.

|Ok, so what if Sony had stuffed up lately. I'm not really not that bothered. Why is that? Because they HAVE done SOME good things. e.g: They were first with personal stereos (can't use "Walkman"--it's a TM of Sony). Then again, they have also done some really stupid things, like CD rootkits as we all know, but the really stupid act was to release the MD Player -WITHOUT- MP3 support, rather than try to push their proprietary AATRAC & AATRAC3 formats.
How gay. If they had released MiniDisc with MP3 and WAV support, they would of took the MP3 market, kicking iPod in the balls and sending them in to planetary orbit.
Ofcourse not every company is safe from being idiot proof. The major flaw in releasing the XBox 360 too early is... wait for it... the lack of HD-DVD support. Funny how a console is already on the market that's based upon a DVD format that hasn't been released yet. When games that require the HD format is released, there are going to be a lot of pi553d off gamers around when they can't play them.
Ok, so what if the HD-DVD part is missing, they can add it later. But aren't we forgetting something? The price of computer hardware is constantly falling - which means when new technology is release, developers are deliberately going to raise the price, and we're talking fat money here. A single layer DVD+/-R drive cost over $1000 when it was released (~early 2002). Now, I can pick up a dual layer DVD-RAM drive for around $50. Now, the point of this rant?
Answer: When HD-DVD is released, the drive alone will cost more than the current XBox360 itself.
This is where I hope Sony won't stuff it up for the rest of us. By delaying the release of the PS3 they MIGHT ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING GOOD and release their console with complete support for HD-ROM, although everybody keeps calling it "Blu-Ray" so it doesn't get mixed up with HD-DVD.
I just hope they don't jack the price up too much, that'll turn people right off. Until that day happens, it's better to wait in anticipation than to see something fall flat on it's ass.

As we got closer and closer to the release date, the system kept getting weaker and weaker. And how about when they said the PS3 was going to be released about the same time as the Xbox 360 in an attempt to keep people from setting their minds on buying an Xbox 360 and waiting for the PS3. They pulled the same thing with the Xbox and PS2. They are less of a hype machine and more of a lying machine.
The PS3 is a Japanese system and they usually release to their own first, where the Xbox is an American system and they try to release everywhere at about the same time with America being its first priority.

Sony's are built in Japan. So its natural they will be shipped there first. The Xbox was likewise shipped here (USA) first, I don't even think there is a Japanese version, and even if there is... the Xbox isn't going to sell, because the PS3, totally rocks. PS2 is great too. Its not just hype, its historical precidence. The PS2 has more games, support, and developers than XBOX, Dreamcast, Nintendo, and NGage combined, and by like double. I don't think that's a coincidence.
The PS3 stats, are impressive, WHEN it comes out, it will hush you up... I don't want to see you standing in line waiting for one, because I will remind of what you said about it... the ENTIRE time..
Sony, hasn't been the leader in worldwide electronics by accident. Your impression of them may be lessened because it sounds a little like you are a somewhat of a snob, and you have a problem with the asian culture, but Sony is the REAL deal.
I buy sony everything, because they rule. You are entitled to your opinion, my opinion of Sony is perpendicular to yours. I for one have an Xbox, but after playing on a PS2, I like my PS2 better.. the game play, everything is nicer, and you don't you have pay for live play on the net...

When it comes to the hardware itself, the Xbox is the way better system. Microsoft looses money on every Xbox sale and Sony makes a profit on every PS2 system because the Xbox hardware is superior to the PS2, but Microsoft must compete with the PS2 pricing, but they are both great systems.

|Actually, the Xbox 360 is being released everywhere almost simultaneously. Faster than any other console in history. It has broken all sales records for fastest selling system. MS has got almost every developer in it's pocket; also has acquired Bungie and Rare for exclusive games such as Halo 3. I owned a PS2 for a while and was very disappointed w/the quality and effort put forth.
Rockstar has agreed to release GTA 4 simultaneously w/the 360. Sony's exclusive days are over regarding that. Developers also say 360 is easier to develop for. There will be about 100 games available for 360 when Ps3 launches w/a meager list of games that don't show full potential, enjoy playing your old games instead of new innovative games for a while.
The blu-ray is the better quality format;however HISTORICALLY, regular consumers opt for the cheaper and seemingly more reasonable option. We gamers don't, general public does. An HD-DVD player will cost $400 initially, a blu-ray $1,200. Which do you think an ordinary Joe will pick? Sony hasn't learned it's lesson from Beta-max.
The 360 has a sound network already setup, and is free! Sony is even considering putting an internet browser in their "network" they supposedly are creating, this is a hackers dream.
Sony posted it's first overall annual loss this year, they're praying for this system to work, but they're left w/delays and empty promises. Ps2 was the pinnacle of their success in games, and their twilight. MS will take over this market just as Sony did from Sega years and years ago, HISTORY repeats itself.

|It's ludicrous to expect the PS3 to be out this year. If you read between the lines it's obvious that the PS3 has some major problems--so major that they didn't even have a working demo at the CES expo. It's not smart marketing to keep a supposed impending product launch secret (especially a massive launch like the PS3). Regardless of the reason why the PS3 is being held up I can guarantee you it won't even be released in Japan this year, much less the US. It looks like Microsoft will be the king of this round in the console wars. Sony will have an extraordinarily difficult time making up for all the lost time. The 360 is already out, soon they'll have the bugs ironed out of it, it's relatively affordable, and it is easy (comparitively) for developers to develop for. Sony just tried to skip machine generations by releasing a machine MANY times more powerful then the PS2 and they're getting burned by that decision. Eventually, when the PS3 is released, it'll be awesome. But it'll definitely hurt their market share to be so "late" behind Microsoft. Believe me, this isn't the scenario I want, but it is the way it is. I'd much prefer to see the PS3 arrive sooner than later.

|I predict that Sony will release the PS3 late this Summer in Japan with a single terrible launch title. It will sell like mad, but their production lines will be unable to keep up with demand. They will be unable to launch in the US until Spring 2007, and Europe will need to wait until Fall 2007 before they see a launch. Their chip yield will be dismal - I'm guessing less than 60%, but they will try to fill the demand with chips that *almost* passed Quality Assurance. Soon after launch, the PS3 will have massive hardware failure rates, which will be resolved about the time it launches in the US. Their production lines for the Blu-ray discs will be fraught with error, and I'd say that about 20% of all game discs sold will not work in the machines because they can't get the aperture size for Blu-ray to work fast enough to read game content without MASSIVE load times. Sony has some of the most expensive TV's on the market...and the performance of a below average-average set. You can get a MUCH better LCD TV then sony...and I prefer DLP or Plasma to LCD anyway.
"PS2, PSP"
So...?
"mobile phones"
Sony still makes phones?
"VAIO notebooks, digi camera"
Their VAIO notebooks are pretty nice...although too expensive (how many rootkits was on yours?? SOrry had to say it:) ). Their digital cameras are way over priced and offer worse performance then their competitors.
"home theater systerms"
I'm a big home theater nut...and I will never stick a piece of sony equipment into my setup. They offer nothing to a high end home theater system...shouldn't even be considered.

ONE.
Most systems WON'T have problems, but there is a significant number of Xbox 360's that have them and there is a significant number of them because Microsoft had to go and release it too early. If they were to release it now, they might not sell as many at the time of the PS3 release, which shouldn't be as late as that one person said in this article expected, as there was also one person in this article that said it was going to be delayed one to two months.
They would have a larger group of people that want to buy them, because they went and screwed it up.
The PSP had a couple problems at release in Japan, but it never ruined anything. It may have been a little more difficult to play when the PSP game bay kept opening up, and when it had a bunch of missing pixels, which one of my friends has a lot more pixels gone awry than my PSP does.
All systems have problems at release, it's just the Xbox 360 had TONS of them. At Software, Etc. in West Acres, Fargo, ND, their shooting game, I don't remember which one it was, was ruined by their Xbox 360.
Sony may make mistakes, but they are trying to fix them and they are more humble about it than MS.

|flash, you speak like an unfortunate. Ps3 is one of the biggest blunders ever, it'll sell b/c of all the fans it's acquired. Just be prepared to be disappointed. Sony had all the hype about the "emotion engine" processor on the ps2, and look at how the original xbox showed that was all bulls***.
The 360 resembles nothing of a box as the first did. Enjoy the grill looking ps3 w/it's boomerang controller, wait though, thats only a CONCEPTUAL DESIGN, I had forgotten. Very few crash, yes, simply b/c consoles are becoming more and more like PCs. The ps3 will be even more like one.
Apparantly, it was ready enough, at least, to launch, as you may know it already has. The ps3;however, isn't even ready enough to show what it will look like, or actual gameplay demonstrations.
They might want to just wait to release the ps3 on the next next generation, they'll have a better shot. It's crap now, well actually, its almost nonexistent, it's a lotta talk w/no game. Say what you say buddy.

|I think that a lot depends on Sony being able to secure exclusive contracts with game developers such as Square-Enix and other developers for exclusive titles or promotional copies of their own games.
For all those who are speaking pessimistically about Sony as a whole - do remember that the Sony PSP is selling fantastically and has established itself very well in the market. Nintendo's Gameboy Advance kept the company floating after the dismal failure of the Virtual Boy and the steep competition that the Playstation 2 provided it's more family-oriented Nintendo 64 console.

Which MS has the upper hand in. MS learned that tech specs. mean little about console sales--it's the games. That's why I believe MS will likely win this race, and now it looks like they have a year's head start too.

|It seems that saying "Microsoft Sucks" is the cool thing to do these days, most of the people doing so are starting to sound lame.
The fact is that Sony IS a hype machine, and ALWAYS will be. Where's the real time Toy Story 2 graphics on my PS2? I DON'T SEE THEM!
Where's the 70million polygons per second on screen! The PS2 does at best 10Million pps, ooops, guess the numbers were off.
To date all sony has shown are techdemos for PS3 games, the one in-game video i've seen for some racing game didn't look all that impressive, so all you sony fanboys need to wakeup from the dream in thinking that once the PS3 ships it's going to somehow blow away the 360.
If you look quite a few games are coming out for BOTH systems, and this time around MS has gotten and is getting more 3rd party support, especially from key japanese developers.
If you see a Final Fantasy game for the 360 (aside from FFXI) don't be surprised at all.
Square-Enix is a company looking to make more and more money, and it's openly said it's going to make more and more multiplatform games.
Another thing is that the PS3 IS harder to code for, and because of this fact, don't expect it's games to start looking that good until late in 07. Since the 360 has been out longer it's games will start to get better before the majority of PS3 games.
Why do I say this? Just look back to when the PS2 came out, most of it's games at the time were also on the Dreamcast, and in most cases the games looked the same or BETTER on the Dreamcast.
And one last thing, since we all know that the PS3 is the hardest system to code for it's also turning out to be the most expensive to develop for. There have been a few news stories out already touching on that fact. The 360 on the other hand is easier and at the end of the day, cheaper to code for. Again, game developers are looking to make money, and if they can with the 360 they'll keep making games for it.
I don't know who will win the race, and I really don't care, competition is good and we need more of it. But thinking the that once the PS3 comes out the 360 will somehow go poof and die is crazy.
Oh and about buggy hardware, my cousin has burned through 4, yes 4! PS2's. Don't know if that says anything to you or not.

|OK think about what you are all talking about. I mean come on please logically you talk about how the ps3 is so godly its such a great system... Look at all the flaws they are having over and over again.. (Company wide) The JP VP QUIT he knew it was getting bad, and NO other JP wanted the damn job so they gave it to a brit. Come on now that right their is saying so much for what the company has been doing lately. Second I have both consoles i like both. But another area to touch on the quote unquote SO many more games that ps has over the xbox... I have a news flash for yeah you are going to see those #s triple for Microsoft. Here is the reason Those companies that make those games need to have their games out to make money right, well I konw for a fact no company is going to wait a year on old technology when they can make their game look better, play better on something new and sell the game for more money. So in retrospect to everyone’s comment about sony having so many gamming companies guess what they just lost a s*** load because if I was a gamming company and they are telling me sorry you can release your game for a year. A year with out a profit on a masterpiece game. That hurts and I sure as hell am going to take my game else where. Now for the stats of this BEAST of a system WHO THE F cares these new systems will match each other in the graphics department,,, YOU KNOW WHY... the programmers for the games have YET to get to that lvl of programming to actually use all the graphics chips. DUHHHHH.. so for what the xbox360 has and what the ps3 will have = them out. ON top of the hd efforts, I love that on both sides but look at the avg consumer do you sure as hell think they can afford a hd tv. I THINK NOT so its not that important so the ray advantage that sony is talking about = out to one expense you are paying for no reason. this system is going to hurt so bad when it comes down to the line, and by that time xbox will end up boosting their sales with new games, and updates to their systems. Go figure. Now respond to something after a bit of research. Not hear say from a gamming website or you best friend sitting across from you at your lunch table!
