Sprint Xohm service expands to DC and apparently parts of N. Virginia

In an impromptu test this afternoon conducted jointly in Reston, Va. by BetaNews' Nate Mook and InformationWeek's Nick Hoover, a successful Xohm connection was made -- indicating that service is also extending to the suburbs.

Initial tests show the Reston connection to yield 4.8 Mbps downstream and 1.3 Mbps upstream. That's even faster downstream than our Baltimore test three weeks ago, where we achieved 2.6 Mbps downstream and 2.4 Mbps upstream. A wireless upstream connection of over 1.0 Mbps is still a considerable achievement.

Earlier today, Washington, DC-based blogger Dave Zatz reported having successfully made a Xohm connection in his hometown, after having purchased a third-party USB WiMAX modem. Sprint has not yet officially announced Washington or the surrounding areas as receiving Xohm service, though it was widely expected to be the next city on the carrier's list.

I am in Logan Circle in Washington DC and I just got my Xohm home modem in the mail. They mailed it here to DC... no problem after putting in a Blatimore zip in in the initial screening screen.

Works like a charm. I am getting up to 4 Mbits per second download and 2.5 Mbits per second upload. Twice as fast as my previous crappy Verizon DSL and much cheaper! Go Xohm!

hey Sprint.. stop wasting bandwidth on metro areas that already have other broadband connections. roll out to the rural areas first, where people seriously need other options other than dialup and high latency satellite.

Yup - spend even more money on limited customer densities...

There is a very simple reason such areas, even within metropolitan areas, are underserved as the infrastructure costs rise significantly compared to the potential for revenue.

Economics of scale still favor overbuilding in high density municipal areas. Its still a business and not an altruistic social project.
