Study: Tumor Risk from Cell Phones

by Nate Mook

Researchers at the Swedish National Institute for Working Life issued a report this week disputing two earlier studies that claimed cell phone use has no correlation to increased brain tumor risk. The Swedish study found that long-term mobile phone exposure could raise the chance of developing cancer.

In January, a four-year study performed by the London-based Institute of Cancer Research and three British universities found that talking on a cell phone had no effect on tumor rates. That research included 966 people with glioma brain tumors and 1,716 healthy respondents. Individuals were questioned on first use, lifetime years of use, cumulative hours of use, and number of calls they made.

However, the new Swedish study is the biggest yet to cover long-term mobile phone usage, including 2,200 cancer patients and an equal number of healthy individuals. It found that a tenth of those with a malignant brain tumor were also heavy phone users -- logging 2,000 hours or more of total talk time. The number correlates to about 10 years of phone activity.

"Of these 905 cases, 85 were so-called high users of mobile phones, that is they began early to use mobile and/or wireless telephones and used them a lot," the study's authors said.

The study also reported a higher risk of a tumor on the side of the head where the phone is held. Overall, the report suggested a 240 percent increased risk of a malignant tumor on this part of the head. Other factors, such as smoking habits and working history were taken into consideration as well.

The Swedish researchers did have one recommendation for people looking to cut down on any potential cancer risk from cell phones: use a headset.

You figure that their are microwaves running throughout our society. You cannot see them with the naked eye, but they are there. The human body will be capable of adapting to these signals. Radiation is part of our excistance on this planet otherwise we would have perrished along time ago.

The Swedish study on cell phone radiation and brain tumors mentions that using a headset will protect users of cell phones. However regular headsets with a wire coming from the ear bud acts like an aerial and increases the radiation by three times as much. Also cordless headsets like the bluetooth also bring radiation to the ear through the signal from the phone. The good news is there is a headset available that is radiation free. go to www.waveshield.com

OVER CELL PHONE SAFETY.

Today there are an estimated 1.5 billion cell phones in the world. In Europe 80% of the population uses them, compared to 50% in the US. The US. market is growing quickly especially among teens and children who are at the greatest risk. . All this points to one fact: cell phones are BIG business. Even though the health risks from radiation are being reported and the evidence is mounting, the industry giants continue to claim their products are safe.
Shelly Kalnitsky, an authority on cell phone issues wants to ask your listeners three questions.
1. Do you now believe nicotine is non-addictive?
2. Do you now believe that cigarette smoking does not cause lung cancer?
3. Do the words “radiation” and “microwaves” sound like something you want going into your brain?

“The jury is still out on the extent of the long term effects of cell phones” says Kalnitsky “but we are discovering more evidence of cell phone dangers.” He points to an independent reporting site cprnewsbureau.org which documents hundreds of articles , studies and research on cell phone dangers under world news.
He discusses :
• How the industry suppresses negative stories.
• The increased risks cell phones pose to teens and children.
• Why current hands free kits are more dangerous.
• New products that can reduce the risk.
• Safety tips in cell phone usage.

Kalnitsky is an expert on the subject and can add insight on recent scientific findings as well as discuss protection devices such as shields, new hands free radiation free kits and safety tips that can offer a remedy for cell phone users.

Cell phones, cordless phones and brain tumors

Randall Neustaedter OMD

Do we need definitive data to show the dangers of cell phone usage? If so, then we probably have it in a recent report issued from Sweden (Hardell, 2006). Researchers there have conducted the most thorough evaluation to date of the association between brain tumors and cell phones as well as cordless phones. The findings are disturbing and cautionary. A previous review of cell phone research revealed that nine published studies showed an enhanced cancer risk from cell phones with increasing risk for longer duration of phone use (Kundi, 2004).

This team of researchers in Sweden conducted two separate studies of patients with malignant brain tumors, then pooled the results. These studies looked at 2,437 cancer patients. Of those, 1,008 had malignant brain tumors. Then their cell phone and cordless phone usage were evaluated. Many of these patients had used these phones for periods of time exceeding 10 years with a cumulative use of more than 2,000 hours. A total of 2,000 hours correlates to 1 hour of phone use per day over 10 years. These patients were compared to 2,437 matched controls.

Results showed that cumulative lifetime use of analogue cell phones for more than 2,000 hours was associated with nearly 6 times the risk of controls. A similar use of digital phones showed nearly 4 times the risk. And use of cordless phones more than twice the risk. The risk of malignant brain tumors also increased with an increasing number of cumulative hours use of cell phone and cordless phones. And the risk was higher for both cell phones and cordless phones if use of these phones began prior to 20 years of age compared to first use at an older age.

The authors note that previous studies have often looked at a shorter time period from first cell phone use to diagnosis. This study examined the risk over a period of time exceeding 10 years. They also note that cordless phones deliver a higher dose of electromagnetic radiation than cell phones.

Mechanisms for the carcinogenic effects have been discussed for several years. They include the toxic effect to cell cultures exposed to radio frequency electromagnetic fields, which include DNA beaks, chromosomal aberrations, and the possible activation of genes that play a role in cell division and cell differentiation.

What to do

The only acceptable ways to modify this risk are to use cell phones and cordless phones less or not at all, or to keep a distance between the phone and your head. This can easily be accomplished by using a speaker phone. Children especially should take this precaution since the cumulative dose seems to have a strong influence on increased risk of tumors. Alternatively, the use of certain headsets will decrease your exposure. Conventional wire headsets may actually increase the exposure to electromagnetic radiation because the wire sends the electrical signal directly to your ear and brain. Wireless Bluetooth devices deliver more radiation because the wire is replaced by a transmitter and receiver. An air-filled wireless tube headset is the only effective type of protective device. These can easily be located and purchased through an Internet search.

Other precautions include keeping your cell phone away from your body. Soft tissue is penetrated by electromagnetic radiation more easily than the skull. Cell phones are constantly transmitting and searching for a signal whether you are talking or not. Do not keep cell phones in pockets or clips next to your body.

Operating instructions

Use the speaker on your cell and cordless phones. Do not hold the phone next to your head.

Use an air-filled wireless tube headset.

Do not keep cell phones in pockets or next to your body when not in use.

Do not allow children to talk on cell or cordless phones unless they use a speaker.

Actally, Broccoli cures cancer, but since they don't promote broccoli like they do Ipods and Cell phones, no one will ever eat it.

Its funny really. Billions spent to promote the things that will kill you, nothing to promote things that might save you.

I can just see it now, a silhouette commercial with people dancing around to some moronic song, eating brocolli... HAHAHAHAH, I'm so sure That will happen. (ya right) Maybe if they make a McBroccoli Burger, dipped in hog fat and lightly dusted with about 100 pounds of salt to make it taste good.

The human race is killing itself to be cool, and I say good riddance.

Hey do me a favor, keep using cell phones, keep drinking Coke laced with 'Spenda', (the newest chemical they have found to murder you slowly), keep eating at McDonalds, this world will be a LOT better off without us.

Thats what Cancer is here for, and I am cheering for the cancer! Hell why not, I'll never get it. I do not do any of the above mentioned things, I do not even own a cell phone or an Ipod, nor will I ever, I never eat McDonalds "food" and I excercise regularly. Oh and I eat LOTS of brocolli, and its not deep fried in chicken fat annd coated with 'spelnda' then dipped in salt.

to get a brain tumor from cell phones is very difficult unless the phone is beside your ear most of the day for a lllooooonnnnng time.

Bluetooth Wireless Headsets Are Even Worse

Wireless headsets represent an even greater risk because the wire is replaced with a transmitter and receiver operating with low power at frequency levels between 900 MHz. to 2.4 GHz. The maximum frequencies for wireless products compliant with Bluetooth specifications are 2.497 GHz. The frequency power of wireless headsets rivals that of microwave ovens, which also operate at 2.4 GHz.

And, while in a few cases exposure at the head level may be lessened by the use of a headset or earpiece, it may not be enough to bring the level of radiation below the threshold where biological effects occur.

Scientific studies have reported biological effects caused by radiation intensities thousands of times below the level normally emitted from cell phones.

This means that even a device that offers up to 70 percent reduction in EMR exposure to the head is not nearly as effective as it seems.

Either some is lying about effects on cancer or it causes other serious problems in the brain.

lets add this up..
I get serious headaches, sometimes have to switch ears for it and some of these devices, I cant take at all. Without using them, I never have these issues.

Will people with the same symptoms, who don't want these companies to be able to just transmit brain damage all over the place, please step up to the plate. The problem is, it all surfaces on brain tumors.. well then what the heck is it causing if it has these effects.

People better be honest about their side effects and step up to the plate cause as all these antennas are going up and technology keeps evolving, if it does cause serious side effects, eventually we might be stuck with it and our children will be damaged even more.

Please, I know this is causing some kind of issue. There should be a thorough analysis of everything it could cause. There should be an analysis of why people are getting such bad headaches when sometimes using these microwave signal devices. These companies should have to re-arrange all their equipment so it is non-dangerous.

There should also be responsability; if these wireless companies don't want to say that it, at least may, cause brain tumors or infertility with use of these wireless devices and a pop up warning before using the device as well, then they should be legally liable for having to pay out damages including the medical bills for every person who can trace their injuries back to them.

They are fully aware of all these arguments yet they let us continue to use these devices with the known potential dangers and they dont warn their customers of it. Not even just about the devices, worse, the antennaes all over the buildings, what about them, they have to be pumping out a lot more than these phones do.

What about people who don't use these things, why should they have to risk getting a tumor in the brain or something like that cause of all these antennas all over the place.
