US video game market skyrockets 57%, Xbox 360 ahead

By Jacqueline Emigh, BetaNews

In the never ending video console war, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has now stepped back ahead of Sony's PlayStation 3 in terms of unit sales, says a new study by the leading industry analyst group on the subject.

But both platforms got outperformed by Nintendo's Wii and the portable Nintendo DS and Sony PlayStation Portable, within a total US video game market that reached a $1.7 billion milestone in March.

Even in a tough economy, the US market for video game hardware, software, and accessories soared 57% from March 2007 to reach $1.7 billion last month, according to NPD Group's David Riley, who attributed his group's findings to a number of factors, including "a shift in preferences for expenditures of consumer dollars."

Nintendo's unit sales of 720,000 Wiis are followed in descending order by Nintendo's DS platform with 698,000 units; Sony's PSP with 297,000 units; Microsoft's Xbox 360 with 262,000; and Sony's PS3 with 257,000.

Consequently, the PS/3 -- which had stepped ahead of the Xbox 360 during the much publicized game machine battle of the past few months -- now lags behind again.

"But personally, I think the whole 'console war' thing is a bit ridiculous," Riley contended in an interview today with BetaNews. "One [machine] is always going to be ahead of the rest. Yet that doesn't cancel out the others. Each offers an entirely different experience."

With the US economy so distressed, why is the video game market thriving? For one thing, the market is still fairly new, with plenty of room for growth, according to Riley, who is marketing manager for the analyst firm. "People hear about video games, and they get interested in finding out more."

Meanwhile, NPD has discovered that the added dollars that consumers are investing in video gaming are coming out of other forms of entertainment, such as CDs and DVDs.

"Gaming is not cheap, but it is satisfying. There are options out there for everyone, whether you're a light gamer or a heavy gamer," he elaborated. The gaming market is also starting to expand to include more older gamers, and to embrace more of a "family/group activity" kind of an orientation.

Other recent research by the NPD Group shows growth in sales of game products to 25-to-34-year-olds shot up 63.4% from 2006 to 2007, in contrast to 42% for 18-to-24-year-olds, and 37.2% for people aged 35 and up.

Another study by NPD indicates that gaming enthusiasts share similar views on "gaming as a family/group activity" to those of lighter gamers such as "dabblers" and "hobbyists."

Xbox wasn't doing so well previously so I have serious doubts that it is ahead in this economic downturn.

On the other hand, I have reason to believe that the wii game cannot keep up with consumer demand.

If I am not mistaken, it is doing well not because it is a game for kids, but as a rehabilitation tool used for the ever increasing aging boomers.

Withering away looking at idiotic / mindless soap opera's or playing checkers and hoping for the day to die will come soon is no longer the only option for the elderly because of the wii.

Regardless of the pathetic console wars the question is phrased incorrectly. The US economy is distressed because the country has been busy breeding a lazy, misinformed and uneducated generation with twisted values that - getting back on topic - doesn't see an issue slapping $1k+ on the table for a console with a few games and accessories. Then again this creates a lot of opportunities for my kind...

The irony is that had MS bundled an inexpensive HD-DVD player in each console instead of allowing it as an add-on - HD-DVD would have won the format war which was decided - despite all of the factors that favored HD-DVD - by the BR installed userbase by virtue of the PS3's bundling of the player.

They couldn't, HD-DVD wasn't ready that fall when MS launched. The movie standards battle was Sony's primary goal, and that's why Sony waited a year.

OK, I'll assume that folks here are not ignorant of market history! It'll require work, but I'll try...

The HD-DVD format players were available a full months prior to BR.

From that point on (I guess that this is the point that is so confusing to the site's historians!), MS could have bundled the player - thus assisting in building the installed player userbase - the exact variable that propelled BR to format dominance by its inclusion in the PS3.

So to repeat - had the XBox3 included HD-DVD, the BR-HDDVD format war most likely would have turned the other way in HD-DVD's favor.

And that is ironic - if not just completely confusing to many posting here. ;-)

Xbox was DISCONTINUED due to Nvidia making the GPU for Playstation 3, they ended their contract with MS

They had no choice but to start work on the next console.

There is room for ALL three consoles

Nintendo's last three consoles have not been that big but now since they come up with something different you jump on their bandwagon.

Xbox360 is #2 Worldwide, yes the USA makes up a significant amount of those sales but the USA is still part of the world and without the USA a lot of other economies would collapse because by god do we love to spend money and they know this.

Also as someone else pointed out MS and Sony have created an all-in-one media center as well.

The wii not so much...

Also keep in mind how many people that bought a wii are still using it? To me it seems like a novelty, a party trick if you will, with the PS3 and Xbox360 if you do get tired of the games or decide all together you don't like games anymore it can be used as an all in one media hub, or in the case of the ps3 you could use it as a computer.

The headline says the M$ 360 is ahead, but later you give numbers clearly showing the Wii is selling almost 3x the number of systems.

720,000 Nintendo Wii
698,000 Nintendo DS
297,000 Sony PSP
262,000 M$ 360
257,000 Sony PS3

Of course, world wide, the M$ 360 has been at the bottom of the sales charts for almost five months now, despite its year+ headstart.

Right, I added $ in every S except for Microsoft.

Yeah, maybe in your wet Sony dreams. What you're saying doesn't even make sense. If the Xbox were lagging behind in sales, it would be BECAUSE of its 1 year head start, not despite of it. Considering people had an extra year to buy their 360s, it's still selling well. You can spin it any way you want, the POS3 isn't catching up to the 360 any time soon. Just because a few idiotic Sony fanatics like yourself keep wishing it, that still won't make it true. Now go find a magic lamp and maybe a genie will grant you that wish.

Pit of Dung, You are a f**cking IDIOT!!!!!
You can't compare the PS3 and the 360 with the Wii! As others have noted - they are a different gaming experience - light vs. heavy gaming. They are directed at different markets. PS3 and 360 at heavy duty gamers. The Wii at kids like you and others who like to play games occasionally, but also have a a real life. They do other things and don't want to pay the price of a high end console.

It's true, the 360 and PS3 are so much more than just gaming systems too. I've had a 360 for five months now and while I do play a few games now and then it's mostly used as a media center. I couldn't do that on the Wii because it can't play Xvid, h.264, etc.

No one is saying the Wii is a bad system, at least not me. I'd like to have one but while all three are consoles they really aren't comparable. Neither in features or in price.

Its the fairly typical outlook that the Wii doesn't matter since it isn't high definition. That is why I feel they have to make note of the Xbox being ahead of the ps3.
High def is terrific but if the games suck or aren't there for the audience who wants it, what is the point.
The Wii may have more games that have a cartooney feel to them but that certainly doesn't mean they are less adult or less fun. They are far more enjoyable, but this article gives the viewpoint subtlety that its more important to look at how the high def consoles are doing versus the Wii.
The sales figures certainly show the Wii continues to provide the fun aspect of games that the smaller section of hard core gamers are most of the ones who are buying the other offerings.

More people are buying games though for the ps3 and xbox360 then the wii, plus its a different gaming experience.

Even Nintendo states they are not fighting against MS or Sony.

So there is no spin, its just thats how they are identified.

No, the Wii sells more software than either the M$ 360 or PS3 every week. Has been doing so for almost six months now.

Click on the World wide hardware sales and scroll to the bottom where they list the software totals.

Like I said before jackas$ (look I can do it too) its called shovelware. People will buy $20 game even if they suck. Sadly most of the stuff on the Wii does suck hard. There is some good stuff but it is either made by Nintendo or its a port of games that can be had on much better systems. Hell I bet even the PSP has more power than the Wii.

mm vgchartz is not a reliable source as they are tagged by Google as a phishing site and have been know to lie about stats.

Of course, it's what you want to hear so it must be true.

dumba**.

The 360 has sold more software than any other console but the PS3 is catching up.

LOL. give us a link to where Google says that is a "phishing sute"? From your use of the term, you obviously have no idea what the term even means.

How are they unreliable? Because they do not lie and say the M$ 360 is the top selling console?

The article is saying that the Xbox 360 is ahead of the $ony Lamestation 3

"In the never ending video console war, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has now stepped back ahead of Sony's PlayStation 3 in terms of unit sales, says a new study by the leading industry analyst group on the subject."

That sentense says what the article is about.

Exactly right, terminalx.

Microsoft fanboys will leap into the fray of comments to delightedly point out the recent successes of the 360.

PS3 fanboys will use the article title as an excuse to rant about how biased BetaNews is, etc.

Wii fanboys will use the article to argue about how the Wii didn't get mentioned in the article title (probably leads to what the PS3 fanboys will do).

Not to mention the first, rather flame-baiting statement "In the never ending video console war..." will only send more fanboys to the Post Your Comment button.
