RSSVMware Ships Free Virtual Machine App

VMware on Wednesday introduced VMware Player, a free tool that enables users to run virtual machines on a Linux or Windows PC. The company says that the program would be ideal for those beta testing software, or evaluating pre-built application environments. The release of the Player comes during VMworld, a yearly convention held by the company focusing on virtualized computing.
While VMware Player cannot create virtual machines like the company's Workstation software, it does offer a few pre-built applications that can be downloaded from VMware. VMware Player is also compatible with machines created in Microsoft's Virtual PC and Symantec LiveState Recovery disk formats. Download VMware Player 1.0 from FileForum.

This is on every box I own. Ranks with the best stuff I've ever downloaded from this site. VMware did a lot of people a favor when they released this.

This is going to save us a lot of money in extra licenses we won't need anymore. Mainly for demo workstations, sales agents, product demo DVDs, etc. No need to buy the full VMWare Workstation license for those! And now we can distribute fully functional environments for demos!
Kudos to VMWare! Virtual PC has a lot of catching up to do to compete.
And for those trying to install VMWare Workstation and Player on the same machine, the FAQ clearly says that it can't be done and is not supported. And why would you do that?

Hi, ...
I have created some Virtual OS files = like : Dos 6_22 Fr., Windows 3.1 Fr., Windows 3.11 FR., Windows 95 Fr., but after i have deinstalled vmware workstation, to try the free Vmware Player, the installation of the vmware dont cause bug. After i have try to reinstall the Vmware Workstation, without deinstalling the free vmware player.
It show that error window = "Setup has detected that VMWare Player is already installed on this machine. Please uninstall this product through Add/Remove Programs and try again."
It's boring to deinstall Vmware Player free version, to have the Workstation version installed. Me i whant both vmware installed = workstation 5.0 or 5.5, and the free player version, on my Windows XP SP2 Pro. Eng. version.
Grat product, ... i try the Free player version, and also the Workstation version. I recommand those to all.

Try removing the registry keys for vmware, and cleaning up the setup info in the add/remove section of the registry as well.

This is a cool product. I have several workstation licenses, but just for kicks I installed the viewer and the demo ubuntu install.
I then dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda, then install W2K3 from CD, and installed vmware tools from my USB key on the image on the viewer.
Then I created a blank image in Workstation and booted to a CD and installed an OS. Cake.
All in all this is a very big deal for virtualization.

This totally kicks butt. I downloaded it and fired up a Windows 98 Virtual Machine that I created in VMware 4.5.2 and it works great. I love the fact that you can run VM's now without having to pay for VMware.
What will be cool is when people start creating Linux virtual machines that are free to download to run on VMWare player. Then you can just run Linux here and there when you want to.
This will have a large impact in the corporate world where sometimes departments need to run something on an older OS.
