Verizon to announce FiOS rollout in New York City

Verizon has scheduled a webcast for Monday, where it will officially announce rollout plans and pricing for FiOS in New York City, which has over 8.2 million residents, providing a huge boost for the service that counts only 1.8 million customers.

Thus far, Verizon's FiOS television and Internet service has been largely relegated to the suburbs, where the company could more easily dig down to install fiber optic lines. Major metropolitan areas have seen only spotty FiOS coverage, making the New York City launch an important milestone for Verizon. The company was granted approval from the city last week to offer its television service. Verizon also plans to host an event at Grand Central Terminal.

I would think that FttH will be a huge hit in the Big Apple, especially not worrying about extra compression strategies that occur during the last mile. And I can imagine that in Manhattan, those Last Mile issues can be pretty daunting.

good, twc can now make their cable internet faster.

It is unlike that I will go with FIOS regardless how fast. I just don't like to get lock in with a contract and fed up with bad customer services after you pass the grace period.

BN article failed to point out the expected completion date is in 2014. That's a long time to go. Maybe in 2014, 50/50mpbs up/dn is standard.

I CANNOT wait for this to happen. Ive been waiting for this for years, wondering why verizon wouldnt get on the new york case earlier, with its high population density...

Living in a farm area just outside of a mid-major city, I will probably be among the last of those to see FiOS rolled out to them, if ever. I appreciate the fact that big city rollouts mean more money faster, but always being last on the list is getting old.

Agribusiness in my area is waiting to come into the 21st century; the thing holding it back is waiting for the 21st century to come to it in an affordable manner. Verizon, get rolling... the southeastern US is waiting!

I just got my FIOS Triple Play here in PA (Near Philly) and WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!

+ Speeds: 20Mbps (Download) / 5 Mpbs (Upload)
+ Downloaded a 120MB file in about 45 Seconds compared to the 5 - 7 Minutes that my DSL too.
+ The TV's biggest Obstacle is getting used to where the channels are compared to where Comcast had them!
+ Overall, I am saving $80 a month compared to what I was paying for these Separate Services!

If you can get FIOS, GET FIOS!
