Vista SP1 'prerequisites' to gear up systems for auto updates
by Scott M. Fulton, III
In a world, to sound like Don LaFontaine for a moment, where nothing could possibly go wrong, when something small does go wrong, it's huge. Today, Microsoft is hoping a small patch will make a huge difference to Vista's image.
The problems Microsoft had in simply rolling out early versions of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 to its initial testers served to vindicate its worst critics' complaints: It didn't seem the company could even correct Vista correctly. The rollout problems were even the topic of at least one of Apple's recent anti-Vista Mac ads. But many of those problems were apparently caused by a minor issue with automatic updates; and now, Microsoft says it's publishing a patch for pre-SP1 Vista that will enable customers with Automatic Updates to apply the SP1 series of patches without fear of entering an endless reboot cycle.
"Over the past few weeks, we've learned a lot more about the problem and have taken steps to address the issue," read a post to the Microsoft Update team blog this afternoon. "Today, we'd like to let you know that we are resuming automatic distribution of the SSU tomorrow [Tuesday, April 8] and provide more clarity on what happened."
It's the kind of problem that users of all operating systems, frankly, have seen in one form or another before: Something in the queue of "things to do" for the update process triggered a reboot. And since that reboot wasn't really called for, nothing in the same queue later on would "remember" to remove that reboot entry after it had already done its job once.
Now, Microsoft has posted a pair of "prerequisite" updates, one for Vista Enterprise and Vista Ultimate, and the second for all other versions. While they're available for manual download, they will also be distributed as part of a normal automatic update cycle, prior to the official posting of Vista SP1 through the Automatic system.
These prerequisites should not be necessary, Microsoft claims, for individuals who plan to install the complete SP1 update package manually. What these prerequisites will not address are concerns with incompatible drivers, which Microsoft is working to resolve with their components' manufacturers on a case-by-case basis.
I appreciate your putting this information on the web. easier to access, read and digest. Your procedures on proper filing is very enriching. thank you so much.

Vista is fine and the SP seems to bring slight improvements. No issues here. I still prefer XP since it's more mature but at the end of the day we keep the systems up to date and have to move on. I am running a business here and don't have time to tinker away with an OS; cannot accept compromise to feel elitist with a fancy fringe platform and need to be compatible with clients *without* clever workarounds. Vista is fast enough on a beefed up T61p laptop to do multi-channel real-time DSP or run VMs with different dev environments. Time is money so why bother wasting it with alternatives.

I haven't had any endless reboot problems with Vista, even though I've run almost every update the day it is released. Apparently other criteria must be met for those problems to occurr.
Of course I did install the full 5-language standalone to install SP1, not the auto update. My co-worker installed the Windows Update, though, and still didn't have a problem with endless reboots either...

like with every piece of software, it needs to be customized and in vista I had to turn a few services off, tweak the look and startup programs to get the RAM usage down, but other than that, if you install SP1 on a decent computer with at least a gig or two of ram and a good HD, I think its really great. Just like with XP when it came out, if you dont have the hardware for it, dont bother upgrading and then complaining about it.

Other than the annoying User Account Control, which I immediately turned OFF, Vista SP1 installed beautifully over my XP MCE system.
After making repeated visits to knock the quirks out of Vista PCs for friends and relatives, I was initially hesitant to upgrade my main rig to Vista. After SP1 was released I went ahead and bit the bullet on one machine... with perfect results. I like the OS better than XP MCE, especially the more reliable task switching and better multi-monitor multimedia support.
Now I have to get around to doing the same for my wife's machine.

I downloaded the update and installed manually rather than wait for Windows Update and it went without a hiccup, as claimed.

It is irrelevant to me now even if SP1 fixes Vista. It's way too late and I have moved on to something better than it in many ways and I finally can truly enjoy my system without dreading using it as was with Vista. I don't care what the Vista crows say, they are blinded by their false belief in Microsoft's superiority.

Out of curiosity, what did you move to? I'm not sold on VISTA either, but I don't see a lot out there either that I like.

I tried Feisty, but just couldn't get it setup right, after weeks of fiddling. In the end I went back to XP because I liked the backup functions offered by Windows Home Server. I'll try Hardy when it's at full release, but given nothing in Linux can do what WHS does, I can't see myself staying.
Oh, and if someone DOES know of a Linux backup solution with single-instance storage, storage pooling, overnight, automated, incremental backups with simple mount/view or full system recovery, please, let me know.

Quite honestly there is no superior OS. They all suck in their own way....well I can't really speak for OSX being as I've never used it but I'm sure it has its faults as well. Vista is bloated and buggy as hell but Linux still shows it's command line root from time to time and while this may be fine with more advanced users it scares the living sh** out of most average (ignorant) users.

I would second that. I also donot beleive Vista is the best OS possible, but from user "ease" perspective I have not see any non Windows OS which just works out of the box.
I have a dual boot with Ubuntu Hardy Heron, which I till date found out the best from the *nix systems, but when it comes to "ease" of using, it doesn't come an iota closer to what Vista is. An average user does not want or know how to go command line way and Windows OS takes care of that.
Coming back to the topic. I also did a manual install of the SP1 and i did not have any problems as reported.

FreeNAS is a good single pool of storage server, but is missing the "incremental backups with simple mount/view or full system recovery," bits.

Tenoq,
If you can stand using a separate backup package, that should work, but it sounds like you want it all-in-one.

Who's a troll? You've not made a single post on this site that isn't a personal attack upon me.
Obsess much? I mean, you've put all of your energy on this site into harassing little ol' me...
Do you stalk people you don't like in real life, or are you one of those pathetic cowards who can't even talk to someone face-to-face without getting all uncomfortable and pissing yourself?
I'm guessing the latter. Hence why you resort to the online form of stalking. No danger there; no personal contact, no threat to your imagined "manhood".

What you just described is the hurdle that is going to keep Linux from ever getting out of the niche market if they don't change it. In an OS an average user should not ever haft to even know that a command line interface exists.
