Vonage tries again with VoIP device strategy

Although its first attempt has so far generally failed to attract consumers interest, the VoIP provider is announcing 'MyVonage,' an effort to promote devices, services, and features that allow the customer to choose how he uses the service.

The first of these devices and services launched under the initiative Monday at CES in Las Vegas was the V-Portal, a digital voice adapter and router with an LCD display, and Contact Book, a software platform that would allow customers to better manage their service.

New customers would be able to get the V-Portal for $9.99 following a $70 instant rebate. However, a $9.95 shipping and handling and $29.99 activation fee would apply.

The V-Portal is aimed at making the process of signing up and using the service easier than ever before, and the LCD screen on the front of the unit could be used for caller ID, and other useful call information.

Later this year the company would launch Contact Book, although it is inviting current customers to test out out an alpha version of the product from its Web site.
