I would not like WLM, i can get that elsewhere. I would like to put everything to rest about this article though. First off: You do NOT want another lame WFW. You certainly don't want WAS, and you really shouldn't be suggesting things that XP is doing already (eg a post regarding incorporating multi-desktops/windows enhancements, please browse the MS website for "powertoys")
Also, you do not want it to turn into mac OSX as this would SUCK BALLS for powerusers and IT pros (like me)
Finally, somebody asked for windows vista to be able to play DVDs straight from the BIOS. If you really want this to happen, try reading up on what a BIOS is/does. WV has NO control over the BIOS of your computer, and CANNOT gain control over it.

What i want to see in WV has already been included (as has much of what is in here). So there's no need to elaborate on that.

For those of you who want WV to work on "older" machines, buy 95/98 they work as well as the machine does. Seriously WV on an old PC will not upgrade anything, in fact it will probably reduce the functionality considering the amount of RAM it needs (i have 128MB of RAM sitting by me if this is an upgrade email me (yoda2031@gmail.com) and i'll post it to you)

Last but not least:
If you want WV to have "OS emulation" (ie be able to use MacOSX/Linux/Win9x/WinME on the same system) simply grab another HDD (or partition your existing HD) and install the secondary OS on that, then configure your BIOS + CMOS to either boot one or the other based on a keypress, or boot a specific one each time until you change it using the BIOS software.

Seriously, dual booting isn't that hard (and if i didn't need all 250GB of my HDD and wasn't skint) i would do it myself.

Right, that's cleared up then. TTFN

Basically the idea behind this is that you and a friend can simultaneously browse the web. You see what they see and vice versa.

So you would open a connection with the user, at which point an IE window would open from within MSN and you could browse the web together...probably the best use of this would be for technical support or showing someone how to do something on a webpage.

The biggest changes or enhancements I would love to see would be;

1- Give the user much more control of what they want installed. I.e. be able to remove, not only hide various peices of software (WMP or IE).

2- More personalization options. If I want to have my name or some other word besides "Start" I should be able to do this without having to download a thrid party program to make this change.

3- Allow users to buy the cheapest version of Vista and then allow us to buy "Enhancement packs" to add functionality of more premium versions. I.E. I have XP Pro but would love to add media center options to my PC without having to format and reinstall with a new Product key.

4- Allow the user to change the look and feel anyway they choose. If I want classic start menu's, make it easy to do so. If my Mother is used to how WinXP looked and performed, allow her to check a box that would make her new Vista look and act like XP did. Its all about being able to use your PC, not about the eye Candy to many users. Sure, pop those security fixes in there, enhance performance but, if a user prefers to use a GUI like XP, let them.

5- Add in a security feature that DISallows hiding of folders/items. We can not trust many companies and Microsoft could make itself look a lot better if it found a way to diable rootkits.

I would love to see an improvement in security in windows. There is nobody in the world that doesn't have a third party software that protects their computer that uses windows. whenever people get on the internet the number 1 concern for them is, am i safe. With hacker concerns growing people hardly sent emails. Vista should have something very powerful to bring back feeling of security.

The biggest change had to be for Internet Explorer. The reason most people use firefox is because of its simplicity about the security that it offers a user when using firefox. If vista doesn't bring a change in explorer in about 5 years firefox will dominate the browser market. Internet Explorer also needs to add extensions and themes to keep the user coming back.

another change is in it's updates, vista needs to find a better way of updating it's software. Which tells the user exactly being updated.

Windows Live Messenger does have to improve It needs to add video conferencing with atleast 5 to 10 people same goes for audio.

I hope you give me an invite for windows live messenger. I have tried and tried to get one but no chance.

Flip 3D should be accessible and useful without using the keyboard. When you have scrolled through the open windows, selecting the foreground window should be available using a mouseclick.

2)
Taskbar managment: Allow for programs minimized to the taskbar to be reordered horizontally. Click-dragging the minimized button/tab and dragging it along the taskbar to be placed on another side of its neighbors would create an "I bar" similar to how components of the task bar are moved around while it is not locked.

For Vista i think that they should include the capasity for intergrating wigets and any other programs fully into the sidebar. Since it is going to be a big feature in Vista.
Also if Microsoft was to have a built in AntiVirus and Spyware. At the moment i use Zonealarm free and AVG free while they are great if windows could somehow incorperate
a similar technologies into windows. This would be increadibly helpful especially with the first installation the antivirus and firewall should have a good amount of flexability and allow more control than the current window firewall does. also the following would be major improvements,
. A better task manager i know that even older cpus should have a easier time now that the graphics have been completely removed form the kernal
.An alternate update Method perhads if you cannot get access to the internet a secure connection to a downloading server could be provided, this would help people after a fresh installation or perhaps as part of the licence microsoft can send out the updates on disk.
.A preferance migrating tool which would allow you to take your prefences e.g. desktop style background image etc maybe it could also take your xp settings and allow you to transfer them to vista updating where neccisery
.More control over user accounts ability to block out internet access for childrens accounts
.A better less bias take on external devices for example iPods and Windows Media Player
.A more customisable interface that doesnt require you haveing to install third party software which overhalls the entire shell a simple interface like WindowBlinds
.The ability to figure out that if a duplicate system process appears that it is more than likely a virus and to take action and investigate
.A new and improved Dr Watson for any of you that dont know it is the program which shuts down and tells you about what happend to programs that arent responding
.The ability to customise the start menu

Autodetection of almost all of the devices on any machine w/o the need to install drivers!? That would be cool! Coz then it would be kinda like most mainstream linux distros that are FREE! 1. Make it so that everything is easely moddable (like windows live). So the ability to change everything. possibility to remove, adjust and add all kinds of items in explorer, the desktop, the startmenu, messenger and every other integrated program/feature.

2. Services and such things are default off, they start when the user needs it, and Vista 'learns' from the user's behavior. So that services that are used alot, get started automaticly on boot. Also the possibility to choose not to do that.

3. An integrated non-intruding check on the hardware, especially harddisk and memory checks .

Windows Vista and Media Center are build together, without having to buy a separate Operating System or additional software. My favorite feature of Windows Vista is its ease of use. With almost no effort, your computer can be transformed into a complete entertainment center controlled by an intuitive remote or keyboard and mouse. While this is certainly the killer app for the home theater crowd (myself included), I feel that the pure simplicity and functionality would be a great benefit for other users. As of the time of writing, there have been no announcements concerning future versions of Windows Media Center or such functionality being included with Windows Vista.

Another Cool Feature is if windows vista can plays Musics and DVD Video without Boot into Vista OS then that would be perfect ~! Users just need to press power button and play their media after BIOS loaded in fews seconds.

Hi, i would really like an invitation.

Here are a few ideas i think that could benifit the Windows Live Messenger series in the future:

Ability to tailor messenger by perhaps installing widgets to allow someone to add or remove functionality if they don't use it.

You could have things like shared media player, or live notes sharing (integrated with onenote). If someone didn't have the widgit you were using, you could invite them to download it from you or centralised resource area (where they have been digitally signed for approval).

Then you could play songs, by streaming your music to them if they click accept. Or show them what you are working on from office onenote without them necessarily having a license to onenote.

Widgit ideas:

Shared media player where i could queue my songs up to share with my friends, they could then perhaps click a button to "listen in" to what im hearing.

Photo gallery where i could share folder of pictures, which then displays a gallery of photographs to my contact.

Score: 0

I'd like to see text logging features improved so that it can also save the icons used, also possibly if winks or other things were used.

Also, I'd like to see a 'compact' mode available for MSN that is actually compact. No user icons or others (I realize ads may still be essential, but it's possible to fit them in sleekly), just the bare essentials for us running on lower resolutions.

Lastly, a mode that would allow you to set yourself to invisible, while letting choice users see if you're actually (a la old school ICQ) without blocking someone.

There are two features I would love to see implemented into Windows Vista they are as follows:

1. The ability to be able to Pause, Resume, and limit bandwidth of files being transferred via the internet and internal network.

2. The ability to see the (hash value) checksum of a file. This should be implemented in the properties menu of the file when you right click on the file. It would show the normal stuff like file size and file attributes but include the checksum of the file, so when you transfer a file you can tell just by looking at the checksum value if the file transferred without any errors and they are the identical file, this would also allow you to be able to search for duplicate files regardless of filename.

I would really love to see these features in a future Microsoft OS.

Better Bluetooth support. I'd like to be able to sit down at my computer and have my bluetooth headset play mp3's. When my cell rings, I want the music to stop so I can answer the call. If I start voice conference in messenger.. It should use my bluetooth headset if it's on. Right click an outlook contact and send to cell phone, and it'll have my cell phone call that person.

Smart "Start Menu" tracker. I install stuff, it puts a group in my start/all programs menu, great. Until I get too many, then I rearrage them, put some in "Video Utilities","Programming","Games", etc. Then I uninstall some, and they leave the shortcuts, because I moved them. Yuck. Or I install a patch/expansion pack, and it puts the shortcuts where they used to be.

A better Uninstall. Hey, it's great that there is installshield, and numerous other installers out there, but I want Windows to detect that an application is installing, and when I uninstall it, if the uninstall doesn't work, then windows should ask if it should step in and uninstall what the uninstaller didn't uninstall right.

Native support for connecting to the motorola 62xx series cable boxes over firewire for MCE. Changing channels, setting up recording, heck, even watching from it without switching from DVI-input to whatever input is the cable converter (Component for me).

Task Manager should be able to tell me what network ports a process is using, and how much network traffic each is using. I *hate* it when I see my network being used, and I can't easily/quickly find out WHO is doing it. Is it a virus/trojan, is it the ads in my browser, or perhaps it's windows update. I'd feel better if I could at a glance find out. I don't know how many times I've gone through and just starting killing processes so I could figure out who the culprit was.

I'd also like to have a utility to see all the stuff that gets loaded when I boot up. What application is causing my boot times to take so long, and be able to "disable" it from autostarting... No matter what the application wants (Damn Quicktime...Which I use once in a blue moon, stop it!). Or better yet, don't LET applications start up automatically if they don't have an icon on the startup folder. Or put an icon in the startup folder if they are autostarting, so I can move it out, delete it, disable it from autostarting, and click it to launch it when I want it. How many people do you know that say they reinstalled their OS because the machine was getting slow? WAY too many. Why? Because it's easier than trying to pinpoint why it's slow in the first place.

I want to be able to launch multiple instances of WMP10. Yeah, sometimes I'll be watching a movie, and some other video at the same time. (Maybe I'll pause the video during the good parts of the movie, maybe not).

I wouldn't mind if windows came with some auto-PIM syncing utility too. I got contacts on my watch that I can sync through some proprietary software via infrared (Was great when I got it, but now that cells are so small/cheap/funcional, I don't even use my watch anymore). I have my cell phone that I'm kinda using as a cheap contact manager/scheduler. And I have a copy of outlook at the office, and one at home. I'd really like to be able to sync my office meetings with my cell when I get to the office, add/update/delete contacts in outlook, and have them automatically synced to my cell/pda/whatever. Then when I get home, I can add personal contacts, reminders and they too will update in my phone. Of course, if I update something in my phone, it'll sync to my outlooks.

Built-in support for dynamic dns would be nice as well. Atleast if they had a built in client that supported dyndns.org, tzo, etc. Although my router currently does do that, it would be nice to have in the OS for those people who don't have routers that can.

An "Add/Update programs" that supported more than just Microsoft stuff would be nice, especially if I could download, and use say, adobe photoshop for a day, and pay $5, then windows would uninstall/disable it tomorrow. Games on my system would notify me that an update is available for download (Or if I prefer, already downloaded it, and letting me know it's ready for install).

I would like to be able to virtually sandbox an application. Any registry entries it makes, anything it writes to disk will only be seen by that application, or any of it's child processes. When the process stops, it all goes away. It shouldn't be able to access any other applications, nor any personal stores. In short, make it possible to run the .exe I just got from "My friend" that just sent me "Runthis.exe" and not worry. Short of that, include the VMWare player, and a minimal self-bootable preconfigured vista image disk and the license to run vista under vista ;-)

Mountable .ISO files as a drive, would be nice, and the ability to burn them to a physical DVD/CD with right click...Burn to DVD/CD.

Map a drive letter to a FTP Site, and use it just like a drive.

Built-in iSCSI support. It'd be nice to be able to plugin a USB Drive, boot from it, and grab the rest of the OS from a iSCSI drive.

How about better hardware monitoring? Warn me if my CPU gets too hot, or my CPU fan isn't running (or not running fast enough).

Oh, and if I run over to someone else's PC, and I pop my USB drive in, I want my settings on that PC. Ask me if I want to temporarily override the current users settings, or make a new user on the machine with my settings. I want My desktop wallpaper, my IE favorates, folder settings (Don't hide .dll's, compressed files turn blue, small icons, control panel in advanced mode, My Documents/Pictures/Network on the start menu, etc. I'd really like it if it would ask if I wanted to install all the .MSI stuff too. Like diagnostic utilities, text editor, etc. And then when I unplug my USB drive, I want it all to go away. Uncreate the user or restore the user's old settings, uninstall any of the auto-installed .MSI files. That way I can pretty much sit down at any Vista machine, put my USB drive in, and the system changes to just how I like it, and I can start being productive in 5 minutes. Then make office, visual studio, etc all runable from the USB drive without an "install", or a less than 5 second "install". Or more than likely, take my work projects from the office, to home, to client site and back again, fully ready "to go" whereever I sit down next.

This could be accomplished through an 800/888 number (or equivalent in each country) that is available only for the update software.

Windows Vista is probably the most anticipated operating system ever. As a successor to the popular and easy to use Windows XP, Windows Vista has a lot to live up to. As someone who likes to travel, one feature that would be appreciated is a sort of built-in map within Vista such as the Google Earth. Mapquest, msn/yahoo/google maps provide this feature, but you never know when the Internet connection or server doesn't reply at a desirable speed. For those who doesn't have Internet connection, that would be perfect. While driving (without GPS device) or at another city, if someone possesses a laptop, and need directions, s/he could find the destination without accessing the Internet.

As a bonus, riding on the poker fever, Microsoft could also add Texas Hold'em Up in the games! How about stats tracking? That should reduce people dropping out of games without penalty because of losing.

Hi there,

I have to be honest, I wouldn't have ever thought to send a comment about a feature I would like to see in the new Windows Live Messenger (MSNLive), but here I am doing just that. After hours sitting at my desk trying to find a solution, it dawned on me that it would be the perfect addon for MSNLive.

Ready?

Mobile phones have a great unique feature, they're LIVE. By live, I mean real-time. People call and immediately you know. So then, since mobile text messaging is currently an option in MSNLive, why not set up a feature to send a text message to a mobile phone when say, a certain user has signed on, or a specific type of email is received, or any email that has been filtered to a class folder..

As well. An app that could check several email accounts on several different servers that could 'report' new emails on a timely basis, and 'announce' concerts, top rss feeds, weekly countdown, lottery numbers, weather, reminders.. If MSNLive wants to be the 'be all and end all', it needs to include the most convenient features and combine them all under one useful and quick tool- MSNLive. what else.

Dave.

P.S. I would like to mention that MSNLive is most appropriate as an upgraded, evolutionary (if you will) addition to instant messaging. MSNLive encompases the traditionally known 'do you msn?', 'are you on msn?', and the brilliant replacement to asking for telephone numbers, the 'whats ur msn?'.

The biggest bone that I have with XP is that as much as it's supposed to cater for use on portable hardware, it hasn't served my needs from a practicality perspective.

When using (Vista), I'd like for the OS to detect whether there's an Internet Connection on bootup, and then automate the execution of applications requiring the Internet, and ignoring them if not.

So in other words, implement some sort of Startup Configuration tool to list all startup applications with the provision to select/deselect those needing A Connection.

That way, if I boot up my (Laptop) WITHOUT an internet connection, those applications that need to be 'connected' don't run, thereby saving my resources and bootup time; however if I decide to fire up my web connection after booting up in 'disconnected mode', it's just a matter of clicking on a single, always-visible Taskbar/System Tray icon (if manually inclined; otherwise an option for automation upon detection) to execute all applications listed in the Startup (Connected) configuration. And of course if you're machine is connected upon bootup, then the applications will be executed as normal.

My current experience is for my Laptop to boot up, and regardless of whether I'm connected or not, run my Online applications such as Instant Messaging(MSN Messenger, Skype), p2p(FolderShare), Software Firewalls, WebCam Utilities, Email client, Application Updates, Download managers, etc. which tend to drag out my startup times by several minutes. Sometimes i just want to boot up my machine to do things not requiring a connection.

I could just create an online/offline account, but what's the point in that? You'd need some user intervention on every bootup of the OS. Everything should be automated based on detection of a connection.

At the same time, you could better integrate such application management with profile management-- to for example disable non-essential CPU-intensive utilities when using Maximum-Battery profile; possibilities are endless.

I would like a new media player, which can categorize my media files with a simple interface, as simple as google, including that ones, which i burned to a cd (when selected the wmp would tell me to insert cd111)

i want SIMPLICITY as a feature. At least on the GUI. And i want to have an intelligent searchbox always one click away. When is search music (from wmp) it should only display media files, in the start menu, the programs, when on the desktop the everything that is searchable.

And as a third feature, i want a one click TWEAK button, that tweaks everything. Defragments the HDD, removes unnecessary registry entries, allows me to decide the startup programs, removes the unnecessary programs (asks me of course which one) and makes a boot-time optimization (like bootvis). And of course i want to defragment the pagefile too.

as a +1 it would be nice to force the user to make at least 2 partitions during the windows install (c: system d: data), on the data should be Documents (and Pictures, Videos, Music), and if it recognizes a second hdd, should ask to place the pagefile there.

thats all :)

Oh, time for fun! I want to see GPS integrated. Yes, I said GPS! There would be several advantages.

This one possibly applies more to laptops maybe than desk systems, but if stolen the user's previous and password-protected specification of a permitted a geographical zone beyond which the computer recognized itself being would trigger it to immediately phone home or another specified location, thereby letting the owner or law enforcement know where it could be found.

"Little" conveniences like time of sunrise or sunset could be determined and displayed. At night, it could easily tell one where any given astronomical objects, such as stars or constellations, could be found via integrated software. That then easily translates into navigation capabilities, anywhere on the planet.

The computer or OS might even automatically switch languages or legally permitted actions, if desired by the user or specified by the authorities, as it recognized where the computer was on the planet. (China would love that one.)

Not to be too "Big Brotherish," but firms could easily track employees' movements (again applying more to laptops) and determine if they are legitimate and work-related. The user him/herself would always know exactly where they were. And with now greater GPS accuracy, computers could determine where within a building or firm's campus it and/or other computers were, and if their locations were legitimate for network communications.

The origins of viruses or malware might be easily and quickly be determined, with evil-doers soon finding themselves unable to quietly escape if they even think about turning their computer back on once it has been pinpointed as the source. Compromised zombies could be easily located.

The list goes on, and all would be options of course. But simply to cut this short, one could also then send a cruise missile through the window of where that troll lives and who continually posts inane remarks in forums, or refuses to leave you alone!

It would be wonderful if M$ could give the option to create a network using USB (PC1) to USB (PC2), even if this had certain limits such as limiting it two x number of computers. It would make life so much easier if you could simply connect two PCs via a USB to USB cable or hub. Vista could for example have a program running on it such as a mini server, with the server/program detecting that at the end of the USB cable is the same such server/program, then automatically give itself a sort of IP virtual IP address only for use by this server/program and for it to be able to connect to the other PCs running this via shared folders.

Hope that makes sense?!

Hi,

I'd **LOVE** an invitation to Windows Live Messenger.

I'd like to see Vista include much more intelligent file management facilities, particularly around searching, synchronizing and archiving of files.

I've thought for years that assigning multiple categories to (now 'Tagging') files rather than storage in a single folder makes more sense.

Synchronizing files and PIM (Outlook) information is still very problematic - duplication and loss of Outlook items when using Activesync in particular.

The ability to set expiry flags on files (after which they are archived automatically or after prompting) would help greatly to reduce ever growing My Documents folders.

Thanks,

John

Now an unlikely personal favourite...

I would like a new windows installer(not for .msi - for putting Vista on your box) that lets you enter "advanced" mode. This would enable full preview of all UI options/configurations, and customizations of all programs put in. You could enable/disable any component with an inf file, and preview the change, and the change would become the system DEFAULT for all new users created.

Doing such a thing would make security a lot easier. I mean, you could just disable IE or WMP installation by default, and then nobody has it. Or you could just clear out the startmenu of all those useless icons/shortcuts, and setup the default theme to whichever one you like. Either way, it means you would have more power over how things work right from the start, without using a program like nLite.

First thing I want...a tiny popup tab right of the system clock, that brings up a vertical slider bar to control system security settings. Using that, you could quickly and easily drag it down to "User" when browsing the net, and drag it back up to "Admin"(and enter a password) when installing a new game.

I want balloon tips to tell me I'm a moron if I try to browse the internet with IE on an admin security level.

I would also like to have application layers easily definable and able to be switched to. Basically, you could turn it on and stick another slider on the right side of your screen, or perhaps the top-right corner. This lets you define and access 'application layers' through an easy right-click interface. Each layer could have different settings, like your very highest layer in the slider(top of the screen) could be your scratch-pad. You have it set so that layer is "idle". None of the apps on that layer do ANYTHING unless you are on it, but you have Excell, Paint, and 3 notepads running. :P

Next, you have your "system security" layer. This layer is pretty simple. It runs silently in the background nomatter what layer you're on, but if you flip to it all security apps you put there(AV, Firewall, Anti-Spyware) get much higher priority. You might also choose to have it setup so you require a password to get out of that layer, and disable your desktop, to make it mimick a logon screen. Oh, and naturally, since you're logged in as a user and not an admin, you can't disable the programs running on it.

Next, you have your gaming layer. This layer is setup so that any program launched within it has the highest priority level(highest, not realtime), and other layers are completely ignored. The security layer has reduced priority and CPU time, but still runs. You might also choose to run media encoding on this layer. When configuring there was an easy to use slider bar to set the maximum processor usage this layer may take while you are not on it. We'll just say you set it to 50%.

And, you have your Application Layer. You run all your web-browsers from this layer, and also OpenOffice. You have set it up so it automatically reduces your access to "User" when you flip to it, and restores your old access upon leaving. This layer is setup as an "aware" layer. Basically, all programs running on it are known to other programs on other layers. That way a game can see that you clicked an in-game ad, and know that it should let its layer be stolen by "FIREFOX.exe of layer0560424". It would also have the power to check layer settings, like the layer being 'User-level access', or it not having the power to install stuff. This would allow individual programs to control security aswell as AV and firewall, since they could somewhat prevent malicious tasks from launching in unsecure layers.

Finally...your browser launched, and now you're looking at a site. A game is running on your gaming layer, and it's using that maximum 50% usage, but not crippling your browsing by any means.

The customizability of such layers would allow you to stick programs in various activity and security levels, and computers could come pre-setup from OEMs in ideal fashions to protect average people.

I will now being re-reading this and spellchecking it, then make more edits with other ideas I had.

Sounds a lot like multiple desktops just taken to "teh exreeme".

Score: 0

The slider bars make it extremely fast, and the right-click customizability makes setup very easy. It also allows potential GUI stuff like watching your windows fly off into the distance as new floating ones plop down.

If you wanted, you could password-protect layer "Hannah" and layer "Billy". Who needs user switching when you can drag a slider to your other account in half a second? :P

Perhaps this isn't the best way for servers/workstations, but I've always liked the "single-account" or "single-profile" system for home/family computers.

There are many features that I would like to see in Vista, some more important than others, depending on whether its business related or not. One of the biggest pitfalls of XP MCE is the lack of support for cable box HDTV (only Over-The-Air). I do not use my MCE for TV anymore because of that point. It would be great because in Canada, we don't have TiVo so being able to get our home system to record something from the web is not possible.

OS customization is also seriously lacking, without the troublesome hooking that XPThemes (for example) uses. It would be great to have the same customization flexibility that you see in FireFox with extentions and themes, without having to pay for software to allow the themes to run. The OS should be as individual as the user.

One more thing would be the integration of online favorites and other settings, into the OS. When I log on (linked to a passport), my online favorites and peferences are downloaded and applied, so when I log onto another machine, my specific settings (theme, sizes, favorites, etc) are automatically applied and available, without having to go to a website (live.come) all the time.

I believe HDTV will be supported in Vista Ultimate.

I heard rumor they were going to make it *much* easier to theme Vista.

This would make lining up windows of applications very easy and clean, and really, once you get used to it, it's hard to use a system with out it any more.

I wish for an additional, "graphical" way to switch between windows--i.e., something besides the taskbar and Alt+Tab, much like Exposé in Mac OS X. This is one feature I sorely miss when using Windows because it really is how I switch between windows 90% of the time. It's easier than moving the mouse to the side (or bottom) of the screen to get to the Dock, faster than Cmd+Tab, and I have it programmed for one of my extra mouse buttons, so it's really easy to activate. (Having the mouse button is really the most useful part, IMO, because even though I can do it from the keyboard, it's much less convenient.)

So, yeah, that's definitely one thing I'd like to see in Windows. I know there's a program called iEx that attempts to do the same thing, but it was rather slow last time I tried it, and it wasn't quite the same.

I've tried that, but it's not the same. First, you need to hit the Tab key multiple times (usually) to get to the window you want. Also, you can only see a preview of the window that is currently selected, not all windows.

With Exposé, I can literally switch windows with one complete click of the mouse: press and hold the mouse button to activate Exposé (all windows or, depending on which type you invoke, all windows beloging to the current app, show on the screen, scaling down if necessary--and did I mention all "previews" are actually live? like if you're playing a QuickTime movie, you can still see it go?), move the mouse over the window that I want to go to to "select" it, and then release the mouse button. (Or, I could just press and release my mouse button like normal to activate it and then click on the window I want, but the other way is usually much quicker. Which is the point of why I'd want this feature in the first place: speed.)

While I'm at it, the "Show Desktop" feature of Exposé is pretty neat, too. I know you can do a Windows logo key + D to show the desktop in Windows (or use the icon provided in the Quick Launch toolbar), but modal dialogs have a funny way of popping back up when you do that. With Exposé, all the windows just slide off the screen until you're done, and then they slide back to where they were before.

Anyway, I really sound like I'm bragging up Exposé, but, really, I don't know how I lived without it. :)
