Wii Widens Lead Over PS3 in Japan

By the Betanews Staff | Published July 2, 2007, 12:34 PM

Sony's PlayStation 3 continues to fall further behind in Japan, data from Japanese gaming magazine publisher Enterbrain indicates. In June, the Nintendo Wii outsold the console by a six-to-one margin, a clear indication that Sony is having serious difficulty in convincing consumers that the PS3 is worth its high price tag.

This follows news in April that the PS3 was being outsold by a four-to-one margin, and a five-to-one margin in May. Even Microsoft's Xbox 360, for the most part a failure in the Japanese market, is being outsold by only a 2 to 1 margin against the PS3. Nintendo's success with the Wii, along with the strength of the DS platform, have propelled the company past Sony in market capitalization value and have made it one the country's top ten companies.

All the consoles have their good and bad points, Technology wise the PS3 and X-box 360 and streets ahead of the Wii, I have seen a PS3 on a HDTV and I must admit I was impressed, but I am not a games person, so buying a console was something I was never interested in. Then came the Wii, a machine that you can interact with, a different gaming experience and this is where the Wii is beating the others, people would never buy a games console are now buying the Wii.

The main problem with the Wii is the lack of game that can be played over the net and of cause the graphics are a bit naff, but they are getting better.

Game designers have been caught out, they was not that bothered with the Wii, concentrating the PS2 and X-box instead, because they thought the Wii would be another Game cube. Well they was wrong and it have sold well, so now maybe we will get some good games.

Don't argue about it, it is not worth it.

Nintendo rocks...good for them. A console that is fun to play and actually makes money, unlike the PS3 (over 2 billion lost so far) and the 360 which may actually become profitable sometime in 2008.

Anyone want a PS3 with only a few hours of play time? This thing sucks as a BD player, I will spend the money for a real, high end set top BD or a combo player. the ISF tested the PS3 for BD video performance and it's junk. Exactly as I have been saying all along.

The Wii will surpass all of the 360 and PS3 sales combined by the end of 2007.

I'm glad Nintendo is doing so well. I would hate to see them go down the same path Sega did. Sony on the other hand can go to hell for all I care.

I dont think anyones being fair to anyone here...

this is just my two cents but..

everyone has done wonders for todays gaming, look at the fact that without compition you have no choices, and the consumer gets screwed.. it sucks that sega is now gone, for the simple reasoning of possibly lowing console prices even more..
i agree nintendo console is awsome.. my GF loves it, plays all those mario games, and i will say i love the concept of the controller, but its not all new for nintendo... look at the power glove.. and the vforce.. nintendo has done wonders themselves... but look at what othe companies have done as well..

look at the ps2.. it was and i belive is still the best selling console with the most choices of games world wide.. wich is as a consumer i want..

no sony did go down hill trying to make a BD player too.. it costs too much for a game console.. and lacks games.. but we need them to stay alive.. to make compition..

and look at microsoft.. i will say i play the hell out of my system.. and its not perfect.. it freezes with disc errors from time to time.. but i live with it because i love to play it..

it has alot of games, but could have more.. and everyone knows the original xbox.. was a revolutionary console when it was first released.. selling a console at a cost to the company each sale.. just to get compition into the market place..

i thank all them in some ways for being there.. and hope to see them all in the years to come..

id love to see a mad rush of rpgs, and final fantasy crono trigger, and such games for hte ps3.. id buy one then..

they killed themselves by allowing emulation, and ability to play burned games, very easily... no one bought games, and it was under marketed.. it was a good console though...

You're missing the point. Sony is getting owned by Nintendo on their home turf. The Japanese console market has been dominated by Sony for years and Microsoft never had a fighting chance in the first place. The 360 did very well in its home country, the USA. Overall, the 360 is doing well, just not in Japan. The PS3 on the other hand is doing horribly on ALL markets, not just Japan. This article is just trying to point out that if you get beat at home, don't expect to do well anywhere else either.

The first article is not from a reliable source and is only speculation it may be failing but people are still buying them as it has one thing ps3 doesn't, games.

The second article

Since you never answered my first reply to your article you posted a week ago citing Microsoft's doom.

Here it is again:

Seriousily, do you even read the articles you post?

"Sales of the Xbox 360 in Europe have hit a wall"

then it goes back and says

"For Xbox 360, European hardware sales seem to have hit a wall"

so which is it did it or did it not hit a wall?

Plus, this is in EUROPE, not internationally and its only specualtion as the report itself says "seems"

Meanwhile

"Despite these issues the report does highlight that some of the most anticipated titles for the coming Q4 are for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live is described as a "beacon of hope".

hm, yeah looks like a wall there, don't see ANY mention of "killer" playstation 3 games, oh yeah thats right, they have very few exclusives left.

Finally

"And on the PlayStation 3, the report criticises Sony for not educating consumers as to what's in the box and relying too much on the PlayStation brand. Because of this a price drop is inevitable, says Screen Digest"

"It also points out that Sony could drop a "bombshell" by the end of the year with a combined price drop and the launch of the Home virtual networking and online game service"

virtual networking and online game service is not going to sell more units on the ps3, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Yeah, no one in Japan owns an iPod. I'm tired of people always saying the Japanese refuse to buy foreign products, that is so insulting to them. The reason the 360 is doing poorly there is due to the fact that Microsoft doesn't seem to really understand the gaming market there. They like RPG games and the 360 has hardly any of those, while there are two other consoles for sale there that have always been huge on Japanese style RGP games. Any questions?

I agree, MS keeps getting more and more shooters that Americans like but the people in Japan can not stand. If they made more RPG's and strange off the wall stuff the 360 would be flying off the shelf there. It is simply a problem with making games for that demographic. You make them they will come.

Yeah sure, the PS3 is doing great in Europe.. and also on the Moon! hahahaha Your posts are so hilarious. You can't even compare the PS3 to the 360, they're in different leagues. 2,500 bad Xbox 360, so what? What's your point? At least people are BUYING the 360, even if it's faulty. You Sony cheerleaders really crack me up. You dig up dirt on other consoles to try and make the PS3 look good by comparison. You can dig all you want, it won't change the fact that nobody's buying the PS3. Your stupid links don't prove anything. For every article you show me about Sony and the PS3 doing great, I can show you 10 that say the opposite. It doesn't mean anything. Sony to drop a "bombshell" hilarious. Just, just hilarious. I love how Sony always tries to create buzz or pretend like they have something big coming up every time they're in real trouble. Am I the only one who remembers over a year ago when the Xbox 360 was about to be released and Sony kept pretending like the PS3 was going to be released BEFORE the Xbox 360? Then they refused to admit it would be delayed until the last possible minute, when even the blind could see it wasn't going to happen. They pulled that trick just to try and discourage people from buying the Xbox 360, while knowing full well the PS3 would be delayed A YEAR!! That's some consumer friendly company right there, eh?

"Sales of the Xbox 360 in Europe have hit a wall according to a new report from Screen Digest, which suggests Microsoft is struggling to expand the user base for the next-gen console."

"The report also observes that the Nintendo Wii is dividing the market, with some publishers happy to ride Nintendo's coat tails to pick up business with poor quality titles, while others are betting the farm on the innovative machine."

Those are the first two paragraphs from your article link. If that doesn't scream SONY FANBOYS WROTE THIS ARTICLE, then I don't know what does. Everyone and his mother already knows that the Wii is doing great and the Xbox 360 is doing well, while the PS3 is doing horribly. Now when you start reading an article that tries to convince you of the opposite, you know you wondered into BS-Land.

Just look at the article we're commenting on right here on BetaNews:

"This follows news in April that the PS3 was being outsold by a four-to-one margin, and a five-to-one margin in May."

These are actual FACTS, not speculations on which console is going to "dive" the market. I think the Benjamin Linus is the last of the Sony cheerleaders here on BetaNews, all the other ones packed up their bags and went home.. or rather, moved onto more Sony friendly territories. hahahahaha

Now you're blaming Microsoft for the type games the Xbox 360 gets? You make it sound like Microsoft makes ALL the games. The developers are free to choose what they develop for the console. Microsoft is at no fault. True, they could boost sales by better 1st party titles, but overall the majority of games are 3rd party. Microsoft being an American company has a lot of American developers. These developers don't care as much about the Japanese market. They make a lot of shooters because that's what makes them a profit. If American kids prefer shooters and war games, then that's what these developers are going to create. Personally, I'm old school and cannot stand any of these FPS/wargames like Counter Strike, Rainbow Six, etc.

I'm not trying to blame MS at all but yes they are getting far to many shooters on the 360. More games need to be made for other markets since not everyone likes shooters. Sony could really be in trouble if companies made games that they like in Japan. Blue Dragon was a good start but many more are needed.

Everyone I know interested in a new console is waiting on the 65nm XBox to come & the expected price drop.

That's why they've hit a supposed 'wall' in Europe.

I can honestly say that anyone I ever talked to about the PS3 just laughed at the price of it.

They need to knock at least £200/$400 off of the retail price (£400/$800 here in the UK).
Then they might stand a chance of selling some in numbers.

Till then this is all just academic chat & the howling of the Sony fanclub angry that the rest of us refuse to listen to their hectoring lectures & see it like they do.

- Cry me a river.

You either have no clue about this or you're just lying.

The fact is that with very few exceptions (no-one ever said not one) the Japanese market is known around the whole globe as a very difficult one to break into.

They're also renouned for protectionism......but rather than come right out be honest about it they hide it with nonsensical details in things like the spec requirements
(famously once refusing shipments of Jaguar cars to the Japanese market because the tiny moulded in lettering - in English - on the plastic red rear light lens didn't quite meet their own peculiar requirements by a tiny fraction of size).

They may well not like some of the XBox 360's games.....but then seeing as more than a few of them appear on PS3 & Wii platforms that can hardly be the whole & complete tale now can it?

Due to it being twice as much in their country. Same thing believe it or not with our Japanese and other asian customers. They all tell us they buy it over here since it is cheaper.
