iPod Continues to Dominate Industry

Apple continued to dominate the digital music player industry in the second quarter, data from the NPD Group indicated Thursday. The iPod had a 75.6 percent share in the United States, over eight times more than its nearest competitor. Following Apple was SanDisk, with 9.7 percent, and Creative with a 4.7 percent share. Rounding out the top five were Samsung and Sony, with a 2.5 and 1.9 percent market share, respectively.

NPD Group warned, however, that Apple's dominance may begin to crumble as more mobile phone manufacturers begin to integrate music player functionality into their devices. Still, the analyst firm said the industry should be able to hold its own as standalone players offer more features, capacity, better DRM support, and easier user interfaces when compared to phones.

The ipod would be a better device if it didn't require itunes which would erase your library if you swap it between computers, which is gay.

The only ipod that is good is the shuffle which can be set up as a regular mp3 player.

That is pretty sad for creative, they are working so hard and just barely staying above water, they are loosing their s*** in the portable mp3 music player. A market they were the only people in at one time with rio and sony. Sandisk is fairly new to that market and its amazing how much market share they have kicked up.

Once Microsof releases their new player that sould kick creative out completely and bring them under. Creative better do a quick market pull out before they loose more then just their s***, try their entire business. This market for them is just one gigantic black hole.

The word of mouht advertising of the ipod with the popularity of itunes, no one else really has a chance. When you see shows on tv, what do you see at the bottom of the scree, download this now via itunes. So no hope for anyone, except microsoft who eats losses on hopeless/verydiffiult with all odds against them markets. Take the xbox and then 360. No company could loose their s*** on a product like they did, but if you have the financila resources, you can do anything because you can hold out, untill your product finally gets a lucky break.

What Sandisk, Creative, and the rest need to do is get together with Microsoft and work out some sort of joint dealio. Not like before, but one in which they all make the same basic players with the same interface. Give that a few years so that the market can be a two horse race before trying to be "different." Or else they'll just all fight for the scraps of the market of people who don't want to be trendy, like right now.

I think that the idea of having all of Microsoft's partners make the same player is going to be a non starter. Why would Samsung, Sandisk, et al want to make the same product as everybody else. With nothing to distinguish their product their margins would be even lower which would make this an even less profitable business for them. It seems to me that the hardware makers would get squat out of that type of agreement.

Sandisk and some of the other PlaysforSure partners would be better off just manufacturing Microsoft branded players. Markups would be lower but at least if Microsoft is putting their money behind it they are unlikely to lose money. That's basically what's happening with Zune. I doubt MS is making much of the components other from the software. Those companies that aren't lukcky enough to have a contract for MS for components of Zune are just going to be left to fend for themselves.

Just hope Apple finally understands they need to change the sucky iTunes UI design for something more usable and flexible...

Searching for media in iTunes sucks big time, no artwork download for ripped CDs (unless you use 3rd-party scripts). WMP Library is much more intuitive, artwork is downloaded automatically if available, and sync with devices is waaaaaay simpler than iTunes with iPod.
