iPod Shuffle to Reach 4GB this Summer?

By Ed Oswald | Published May 27, 2005, 12:44 PM

Apple is planning to release 2GB and 4GB versions of the iPod Shuffle this summer, according to a report on Friday by Asian technology site DigiTimes. According to the article, sources said that Toshiba and Samsung have "aggressively" ramped up production of Flash memory chips in preparation for the release of the new models.

The new iPod Shuffles will come in June and August according to reports. 8Gbit NAND Flash chips will be used in the higher capacity models, and currently only Toshiba and Samsung have the ability to produce them. Apple and Toshiba declined to comment on the report, and Samsung did not respond to a request for comment on the story.

4GB flash-based players? Might be time to upgrade my iRiver. Gotta hand it to Apple for at least pushing the market along a bit with their pricing of flash-based players. They're doing us all a favour!

Who cares it's still an Ipod piece of crap any way you look at it!

Yeah but what's the point with a crap battery life compared to Sonys latest model? Improve the battery life and I'll buy it - otherwise my money's going to Sony.

Yeah, but it would be worth it, so long as apple does the same thing with this new one and undercuts everyone else!

I was also wondering about the prices ... if they'll cost practically as much as a "regular" (or mini) iPod, or if they'll just bump up the capacities of the lower-priced units over time and add these uber-large as the higher-end flash-based models. But since it probably won't have a display...and the HD-based iPod would probably be cheaper...the only advantage seems to be either smaller size or having non-moving parts.

That being said, maybe they'll change the design, or--like I said--maybe they'll just increase the capacities of existing models (like they do occasionally with other products--most recently with the second revision of iMac G5's: increase specs, leave at same price) and perhaps add a few on top.

4GB of random songs without a display. Ah, they've almost achieved the technological supremacy of a radio.
