We purchased ipMonitor in 2006 as a replacement for Whatsup. It works very well for us. You can monitor just about any port and also provides the ability to write your own scripts for monitors that aren't available out of the box. The problem is that Solarwinds has since purchased this product and the maintenance/upgrade costs have sky rocketed and it took me 2 months to get anyone to return my call. We will not be upgrading as long as Solarwinds owns this product.

I agree with the others on the price. I purchased a Silex USB over IP hub for just a bit over $100. This gives you a dedicated USB server and each USB port can be assigned to a different host.

We had to throw together an instant messaging solution within a week at my place of work. We chose Soapbox for the server side. We tried to use the latest Soapbox client, but it was very flaky. I ended up trying the Pandion client, especially after finding out that a lot of other Jabber/XMPP clients are based upon it. It works great. We are in a live test mode right now and have had no issues to speak about.

I have been running Bulletproof FTP server software on a high volume system in a production environment for many years now. I have had very few issues with the software. It has been (without a doubt) the most cost effective purchase I have ever made.
