4.14.0.403 Alpha 4 (Dec 5, 2007)
This is a great program. With the multiplier change option. I was able to upgrade my CPU from a 1700+ to a Barton 2600+ on my Presario 900. Without CrystalCPU the CPU would run at full speed.
Beta 2 (Nov 7, 2007)
OK,
I'm a Smartsuite user (WordPro, 123 and Organizer).
Also using MS Office 2000 and OpenOffice.
Tried Symphony Beta 1 and now Beta 2.
- Speed is still horrible.
- Look is the same
- After uninstalling still live more that 200 key in the registry.
- the import of .lwp and .123 is better. But can't save in those format.
Open a Writer document and after a WordPro document. It's still a lot faster to access normal function in WordPro. The tool bar is a lot better in WordPro, in particular the one at the bottom.
So at the end I have the same conclusion. This product doesn't improvement my daily function.
Since Symphony is basse on OO, I don't see anytime soon when they will be able to incorporates some of the advantage of Smartsuite in it. Like tab division with a document like WordPro.
IBM should opensource Smartsuite. OK, all the development are gone. Ok, almost no one at Lotus know the code of Smartsuite right now. Even there argument that some code is proprietary should be a blocker.
Open what they have and the community will fix it. Look at Firefox. It took some time to clean Netscape code and the first version wasn't stable. But look at the product now. By the way, I'm still using the Mozilla Suite with Seamonkey. Thanks again to the opensource community.
Beta 1 (Oct 3, 2007)
It's base on OO but version 1.X not 2.X.
It's very slow to load. Can't properly import Lotus Smartsuite files (.lwp and .123). Lot's of errors from the import that I tried. The UI is a welcome change compared to OO. But not as better as WordPro. Some feature of Smartsuite should have been included, like the tab division of WordPro. Color tab in the Spreadsheets like 123. Inclure a PIM like organizer.
After uninstalling, it left more then 200 key in the registry.
This product doesn't make any sence. They should have created an import filter for the Smartsuite with in Oo. Create a theme around OO not a new build.
1.4.0 (Jun 6, 2007)
Used it since 1.3.8. Was able to test Ubuntu with this and even MenuOS (for fun). Network is working. Very lite 15 MG. No problem at all. This GUI is simple. Very good Virtual tools. Now it as Mac Os as host, let's hope it will have Mac Os as Guest on the next release.

Apple didn't invent this... There was lots of other who add this concept before.
Even in the movie "Minority Reports” had this concept in 2002.
Look Youtube, Bill Gates shows the "Microsoft Surface", in May 2007. At least Microsoft didn't have the arrogance to say they invent the concept.
Apple is always steeling concept from other.

Even the Microsoft Surface Table add Multitouch in 2007.
This patent was file in 2008.
This US Patent Office is full of crap

"..the interface was not the problem...É
Well the UI was a problem for me with MS Office and Oo.
Smartsuite UI, for me, is still better that anything available right now. The new look from IBM Symphony is a welcome change. Look a bit like Koffice.
I did read many thing regarding the ruban and change is good sometime.
I'm willing to pay the M$ if it's save time in production or improve what's available. The fee of the software is one thing but the production cost is also important.
And what's missing it Oo and Symphony is a PIM, like Lotus organizer or Outlook.
1.4.0 (Sep 19, 2007 - 11:08 AM)
For now, it's only Linux KDE. Since Koffice 2.0 is suppose to be ported to Windows and Mac, will have to wait and see if it's a viable product. But as of now, you need the shell KDE 4.0 (beta) to be able to run it in Windows. Sound complicated to be a viable product.

I will add...
I'm a Smartsuite user. We are using it daily in my company, WordPro, 123 and Organizer. I'm looking to replace Organizer with an opensource solution, probably SugarCRM. WordPro is still very good. 123 is missing feature of Excel that is starting to be important.
So the question, why would I use Symphony? They is no logical reason to is it.
1) It can't properly impot .lwp and .123 files.
2) It's much slower that OO.
3) Missing what I like about SmartSuite.
4) IBM have a very slow evolution rate
5) IBM doesn't care about small company.
6) IBM as a tendency to leave there client with no support.
