  1. Review - Advanced StartUp Manager

    1.1 Beta (Sep 12, 2001)

I give this app a 5 because of it's pretty interface. This looks great for newbies. However, you can do the same thing with Startup Control Panel, which is free (although not as pretty it is just as useful). http://fileforum.betanew...tail.php3?fid=958911915

  2. Review - Lock My PC

    1.25 Beta (Sep 10, 2001)

Windows 2000/NT(/XP?) has this functionality built in. To access it simply create a shortcut to

    %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

I realize this software offers more advanced functionality... but if you just looking for a simple way to secure your workstation while you go do lunch, use the above command. :)

I am not sure if this shortcut works on Windows 9x/ME. If the above command does not work, then this may be a good program for you. P.S. I apologize for the poor rating... but was forced to choose one.

    No. See this guy's story:

He tried only to find out the PIC BIOS has a "Boot Secure feature so only the desired software will load."

That URL was broken last night, but appears to be back online now.

  6. Comment - Sun Details StarOffice 6

    1.25 Beta (Aug 29, 2001 - 7:42 PM)

It appears StarOffice 6.0 bill be built using the work done by an open source project called OpenOffice. The relationship between StarOffice 6.0 and OpenOffice sounds very similar to the relationship between Netscape 6.x and Mozilla.

For more information check out the Historical Background on the OpenOffice web site. BTW... they are even beginning to port the latest OpenOffice build to MacOS X.

  7. Comment - Real Demos MusicNet, Legal Downloads

    1.25 Beta (Jun 26, 2001 - 3:14 PM)

Actually, they won't even be providing the audio in MP3 format! :(

According to the FAQ , "RealAudio offers audio quality at 64 Kbps that nearly nine out of 10 people surveyed couldn't distinguish from CDs—setting new standards for quality and clarity at just half the file size of standard MP3 files." If I am going to pay for a song, I want TOP quality bit rates (which to me means a minimum of 128 Kbps), AND I want the ability to play it on any device I choose, including burning it to a CD!
