  1. Review - 1-2-3 Spyware Free

    4.8 (May 25, 2009)

    Average software....
The interface is fairly straightforward and easy to use, and the fact that this program has active protection is certainly a plus for certain as is the ability to have automatic updates in the free version. However, this program will sit at a whopping 80 MB of RAM while in auto-protect mode, and in my book that is a definite minus for a program whose only purpose is to detect spyware. The scanner is pretty slow for it's 95-100 MB of RAM sucking power. I would think with that many resources tied up the scan would be moderately faster. The other main complaint I have about this software is the nag screens. You get one for their PC Tools in addition to a nag screen telling you how many registry/system errors to have during the scan prompting you again to buy their system maintenance products. I'd probably stay away from this program until they clean some of the nag screens and RAM issues up.

  2. Review - ZoneAlarm Free

    8.0.298.0 (May 11, 2009)

ZoneAlarm used to be the king of firewalls. I can remember when expert after expert scored it the highest among them all, and now it's just average. The nag screens during installation are annoying especially if you do not wish to pay the premium price for the paid version with the same nag screens and average tech support. It gets annoying with the popups whenever you update your software to newer versions, asking you for permission yet again. The lack of updates is disappointing as malware is ever evolving, it would be nice to see more definitions available.

However, on the positive side, it is easy to setup once you get past the nag screens and if you are a beginner that is definitely a good thing. It's not very RAM intensive and I have yet to get an infection since pairing ZoneAlarm with Rising Anti-Virus. Solid, but not spectacular, there are better, but there are certainly much worse.

  3. Review - Comodo Firewall Pro

    3.0.25.378 (May 11, 2009)

A solid firewall if you are looking for something kinda basic. However, the consistent popups are annoying and often times for safe programs. If you don't mind the constant popups for permission, it's solid. It can also be a little heavy on the RAM, but with most computers having at least 512 MB of RAM at the very least(for older computers) it is not so taxing that it will bring your system to it's knees. The only other complaint I have is that the Firewall has now been bundled with their anti-virus software to form their "Internet Security" package meaning that updates to the firewall only are likely to end soon. All that being said, you can certainly do worse than this one.
