A war that never should have been, if industry was smart enough to truly understand the ramifications of such a thing. And for Sony to admit that they rushed a product to market just because of HD DVD is just icing on the cake. For shame on HD DVD for releasing a finished spec and the true follow up format to DVD by design.

I could not agree more with your comment. Blu-ray is not even a finalized spec. HD-DVD was decided to be the next generation format by the DVD forum as it was a finished spec that should have been supported fully by all parties, including Sony. It would have prevented the very format war that has made both formats unviable at this point in time as compared to regular DVD.
Blu-ray being an integral part of the PS3 I think has led to some misconceptions within the industry regarding actual adoption of Blu-ray for video media. After all Blu-ray is predominantly a means of distributing game media for Sony if you think about it.

Something that should have been done initially to prevent the format wars that prove to hinder the adoption of new technologies. It is just ironic that all the major players involved in the DVD forum could not generate the capacity to see a single format was the only way to bring HD disc technology to the masses, and then make it happen.

"Imagine what we can all achieve when working together to take the home entertainment business to the next level."
The sad thing is that this is what Sony should have done to avoid the whole format war in the first place. They are a part of the DVD Forum, and the major reason behind the success of DVD was that it was the only digital disc format. Consumer adoption would have been far greater by now with player and media costs near the same or perhaps better than they are today.
Now I will say that it is not all Sony burden with regards to having had a single format, but the DVD Forum as a whole, all companies involved should have worked far more diligently to avoid a format war. A war that only leaves confused and disgruntled consumers.
The PS3 is a Blu-ray player, but is also the successor to one of the most successful game systems ever, so of course it was going to sell. But I truly wonder how many of those PS3's sold are being used on HDTV's capable of viewing HD game and video content.
So Sony saying "Consumers have made the choice; the challenge today is not to continue the format battle", make sense, but I don't think it accurately accounts for how the device is being used as it pertains to HD content.
Lastly, this comment, "Now we're ready for the next phase: the phase to really fulfill the promise of Blu-ray technology" worries me, as a constantly changing spec that effects early adopters, in a potentially detrimental way, does not build my confidence in Sony, from a consumer perspective.
