I really don't want to start the review with an insult, but qazwiz, are you sure they didn't operate your brains out?
Only bad thing about µTorrent is that it is not open source. Other then that, it is perfect BT client. Small memory footprint, user-friendly features, author is *very* responsive to requests/suggestions etc. It is amazing that the author has managed to pack all those features into a single 115KB executable.
As for the µTorrent users being torrent thieves... Maybe - just maybe - you could have thought about the fact that µTorrent has simply become one of top three BT clients. I'm willing to bet that the two other clients used by "thieves" are Azureus and BitLord/BitComet - not because they are favourites of the thieves, but because they have most users.
And your memory argument is simply silly. Why would anyone want to run client that takes 150MB RAM and lots of CPU, when they can get the same features with a client that takes 6MB RAM and next to none CPU? I'm an ex-Azureus user, when Az was working, it felt like a compiler running on the background. When µTorrent is running, well, there is no difference if it is running or not - I can still do whatever I want, and that includes playing latest games or compiling or...
As for the plugins... what are you missing from µTorrent? Play Sudoku or have 3D charts? WTF, it is a BITTORRENT CLIENT, not media player. The less obtrusive, the better. I thought long and hard - and I didn't come up with a single idea that I would need or even want to add, especially as a plugin.
And µTorrent being banned from tracker? How conviniently you've forgotten that site... Admit it, you made it just up. Sites that don't have their own client - such as the spyware-ridden TorrentSpy client (yes, I know that they don't run a tracker) - tend to recommend µTorrent. Same goes for your hints about the spyware - you're just trying to create FUD about the thing. Heh, Ludvig would be world's best programmer if he could put great BT client *and* spyware into 115KB .exe. Besides, don't you think that someone would have noticed it by now...
As far as I can see, µTorrent is fast becoming de facto standard BitTorrent client. Azureus is losing users all the time, BitComet's userbase is pretty much the same that it was six months ago, others - including mainline - have too small userbase to matter.
I wonder, perhaps the author might be willing to make µTorrent open-source when it reaches some kind of stable version. Being a professional programmer, it would be very interesting to peek under its hood.
1.0.325 Beta (Nov 15, 2005)
Would be nice... except, as mentioned, it doesn't even look at the items that you checked, it just removes them all.
Also, it found two NSIS (Nullsoft Installation System) dll's to be spyware, not to mention one link in my Favourites folder.
1.0 Beta 4 (Jun 17, 2005)
It is rather obvious that cousinkix1953 has not tried nLite not does he have any idea what nLite does, he is just trolling.
nLite is a must-have for every proffessional and hardcore amateur. So far it has been for me the best softwate released in 2005. It makes installing Windows much easier - consider the situation: install XP to 25 (different configuration) machines. Normal: I install Windows, then spend 30 min on every machine, changing settings, updating, etc etc. nLite cuts that time to maybe 5 min.
Just out of curiocity, I tested how low I can push Windows XP memory use. With nLite and some tweaking, 18MB. Sigh. Makes me wish that MS engineers/programmers/developers would re-think their approach and wonder if users really need ~60MB useless junk loaded to RAM...
1.5.1 Beta 1 (Jun 14, 2005)
jv16 PowerTools has become crapware since original developer sold it to Macecraft. Registry cleaner marks important keys as "safe to remove" and is slower then ever before etc etc
Sigh. Used to be one of my favourite tools. Now it is next to worthless.
0.9.7 Build 353 (May 21, 2005)
Very, very nice. Best in its class that I've seen.
On the downside, user interface is somewhat cluttered. There are too many buttons and their icons are not that informative, even after I used it for some time, I had to check for hints.
0.9.7 Build 353 (Nov 29, 2006 - 1:43 AM)
Why do you hide info behind "Not an a 30G Digital Media Player" tag? Reality is that Zune isn't competing in some mysterious 30GB music players category, it is competing with *all* media players. And even then you didn't mention "Creative Zen Vision:M 30 GB MP3 and Video Player (Black)" (currently 12th).
Zune is doing badly and there is no one but themselves that Microsoft can blame. DRM nastiness, bad software, bad design, bad features.
0.9.7 Build 353 (May 25, 2005 - 10:40 AM)
Who cares about the WGA? There are several Windows XP keygens that can generate a valid working key, that is happily accepted by the GenuineCheck. I actually tested this - instead of my "legal" key I used keygen. Verified Windows, all WGA things work etc etc.
This is yet another stupid check that drives legal users away but doesn't even hinder pirates. Just lower the price of Windows XP to a reasonable level and piracy will go down 90%. You cannot expect an 3rd world user with a montly pay of $100 or less to cough up that money for operation system.
