  1. Review - Adobe Flash Player for Windows

    10.0.12.10 RC (Sep 16, 2008)

This appears to be the plugin for Firefox etc. I installed it, and it still says version 9 for Internet Explorer. Is there a link for the ActiveX flash 10 for Internet Explorer?

  2. Review - AVG Anti-Virus Free

    8.0.169a1359 (Aug 28, 2008)

The free version gets low priority access to the update servers. For me, that means only 1.2 kps download speed over broadband. Thats a major reason not to use this product. I don't pay for a cable connection to wait 10 minutes to download a few hundred KBs. AVG has definitely gone down hill since version 7.5, not only with their AV software, but also the way they treat their users. I would not install this on anyone's computer. BTW, why do you always show the screenshot from 7.5?

  3. Review - DirectX for Windows

    August 2008 (9.24.1400) (Aug 11, 2008)

Only the Web Installer is currently available. People keep posting links to older versions, like the June/08 one, or the Aug/07, or even the Feb/08 version. The full installation files may take up to a week or so to show up at MS.

  4. Review - Ad-Aware Definition File

    0108.0000 (Aug 4, 2008)

Updates are still available for the earlier version of Ad-Aware, but I agree that version 2007 is poorer in quality.

I've been looking for a replacement, and am currently testing Malwarebyte's product. It's free, unless you want protection always running in the background (which I don't).

So far, it seems nice. Simple UI, and is able to clean out some items that others miss.

  5. Review - GPU-Z

    0.1.1 (Nov 14, 2007)

This program always tries to update over the net when you run it. Even when you choose "never", it still attempts to check for an update.

Considering that it consists of an isolated executable, I don't see any way around this.

I don't do programs that update against my will, so I have to give this low marks.

  6. Comment - Microsoft Releases New Beta of IE7

    0.1.1 (Jun 29, 2006 - 11:20 PM)

My interest is in the UI. I found a way to move the Menu Bar to the top. Now I'm looking for a way to make the Command Bar disappear. Most of the functions are found in the Menu Bar anyway. Someone in another forum suggested that removing all the icons will make the Bar go away, but I can't remove the two icons that deal with Favorites. In any case, the icons all come back when IE7 is restarted. I'm using the Classic Windows theme on my machine.
