  1. Review - Winamp 5 Full

    5.08e (Feb 22, 2005)

As was mentioned in the official news about the napster/drm/winamp work around, the drm key that was allocated to Winamp was effectively set to be refused (since for drm to work you have to connect to a remote machine to validate the key for the file from what i gather)

hence to support drm files again, a new key needs to be allocated to Winamp which is what the 5.08e build does. basically if you're dumb enough to use drm wma files i think you need help anyway :)

  3. Review - Winamp 5 Full

    5.07 (Dec 3, 2004)

Winamp is Winamp and that's enough to say about it :o)

    -------------------------

Just to clarify on a comment by kgruber which people keep citing for whatever reason...
"I can't imagine who would post enthusiastic reviews other than AOL trying to breathe in new life into a rotting corpse."

Well you've been using a AOL owned Winamp for a long time if you're still using 2.8 ;) Winamp / Nullsoft was bought in 1999 and without that it's doubtful 2.8 would ever have come to be as it is.

  4. Review - Winamp 5 Full

    5.06 (Nov 18, 2004)

Not bad for a dead player to come out with a new build ;) As always it's recommended that you update to the latest Winamp build (and if using an older machine remember to uncheck what you don't need and don't use Modern skins if it's that slow to have the speed of the 2.x series in your hands)

Oh and Eric Caoili is a guest writer for the Winamp.com news pages and has never been part of the Winamp team (just to clarify things)

[edit]'This small update is probably just in response to the stories that the winamp project is dead.' er not really since 5.06 was started on about 2 months ago (just to clarify things)

  5. Review - Winamp 5 Full

    5.03c (Jun 25, 2004)

roj: if you don't like it, don't use it and really just don't make dumb trolling comments like you have.

just to point out, the only change from 5.03a to 5.03c is the "Added eMusic trial offer to installer. uninstaller included in Program Files\Winamp\eMusic" which as with all Winamp installs can be deselected when running the installer so it won't ever be put on to the machine.

Winamp is a great program for what it does though i am biased since i've used it since 1999 and now develop plugins for it (and break winamp from time to time ;) ). If it fits what you like then use it, if not, then just use something else and enjoy that which is so simple to do (yes?).

    -daz (a happy Winamp user/dev'er)

p.s. remember to install the update patch if you haven't already (http://forums.winamp.com...?s=&threadid=179096)

    [edit]
graysky: you might want to check things first, Winamp/Nullsoft has been owned by AOL since the 2.5 release and it has to be said that without their funding then there wouldn't be a current Winamp (which seems to be a major misconception that is dealt with on the Winamp forums frequently especially since Winamp 5 was released)

  6. Comment - AOL Updates Winamp After DRM Snafu

That's true, but 1c was a lot nicer to be spending :D

and the point of that is rather mute since if people are trying to play drm files then they still won't work since the key in the older versions isn't valid and so any attempt to play will be rejected as nate has said about in his comments to this article.

if people are dumb enough to use drm then it's their own fault for the whole issue arising and the stupidity of certain other sites which i won't name have not helped things out either for a plugin which was created for a legitimate use well before any of this drm stuff was around. tis sad

Yup though the increase in costs at the start of the year was a shame though

Winamp doesn't have spyware in it otherwise i wouldn't use and code for it. The fixes in the 5.08e build to come out soon were done by one of the few guys left on the Nullsoft team so it's still not directly a AOL coder playing with things.

  10. Comment - Death Knell Sounds for Nullsoft, Winamp

    5.03c (Nov 11, 2004 - 7:09 PM)

Yes Winap is dead!! (i'm not the best speller but at least get the item in the topic right :) )

If it hadn't been for internal conflicts over Winamp then fb2k wouldn't have appeared (as i've read things so the point is mute).

Does it matter what player you use as long as it suits what you need? Fb2k is a decent program (i used it for a while myself) but it's not suited for everyone and trying to force feed it down people is not the way to go. Use what you want to use not what people make you use!
