  1. Review - Zoom Player Professional

    7.00 RC1 (Jul 7, 2009)

Used to be a supporte but now that they released the premium edition, they are charging users for features which USED TO BE part of the pro version I purchased. What a ripoff.

  2. Review - VLC (VideoLAN) for Windows

    1.0.0 RC3 (Jun 8, 2009)

Still does not remember the last folder used despite claims that it has been fixed on their forums. I have tried every nightly and this player still defaults the open file dialog to MY DOCUMENTS as opposed to the last folder used. 2/5 because this bug is highly annoying.

  3. Review - NOD32 for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP (32-bit)

    4.0.417 (Jun 5, 2009)

I am running version 434 and I have to say v4 of this antivirus definitely is a vast improvement over v3. The performance is much better with a lighter impact on system memory usage. There is negligible performance impact on startup, when compared to Symantec Endpoint which I was running since the US Army provides it for free, and it is faster in scanning the 1.5TB of data I have on this computer system. Best antivirus available right now, in my opinion.

  4. Review - Opera for Windows

    10.0 Build 1491 Alpha (May 11, 2009)

    Shallot:

A: Because We are rating the version RELEASED HERE, not the final release. If a bug pops up in this version or any other, you rate that version as appropriate. If I wanted to rate opera based on what it can be or used to be, it would never get below a 4. Ratings here are PER VERSION, not PER APPLICATION

    B. If in my testing I find problems which become a show stopper, those problems most likely merit a lose of a rating point. Various bugs == various points lost.

    C. If you do not understand that others have a different viewpoint from your own, I suggest you move on to another site.

That said, Opera continues to lag behind in COMMON features found amongst other browsers. If you want to edit a stored password in opera, you cannot do it. Entering a different password at said site results in a duplicated entry in the wand requiring manual deletion. Most other browsers update the existing entry.

Opera does not have an autocomplete function. The notes function is NOT a substitute for proper autocomplete.

Opera still has no support for allowing third party content to interact with it. UserJS is not a replacement for a true API or extension system where the users can add functions missing in opera (Yes, opera has blaring holes in functionality yet still manages to fill niches no one wanted (Torrents, widgets, etc)).

That said, I feel that opera will continue to be a 1/5 because I simply cannot make this browser, something that is personal to each user, my own.

  5. Review - Mozilla Firefox for Windows (v3)

    3.0.9 (Apr 21, 2009)

mjm, how does using 64 bit operating systems give you more credibility? Is it just because he has 4GB and is running 32 bit? That is not an argument. I still do it and wont use 64 bit until my hardware is better supported. To me, 32 bit is still the SMART way to go. A browser should work the same on either platform, or close to the same.

  6. Comment - Don't wait for Microsoft's patch: Secure Windows now from Monday's 0-day

    3.0.9 (Jul 6, 2009 - 5:29 PM)

From the microsoft website listed in this article:

"Customers who are using Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 are not affected because the ability to pass data to this control within Internet Explorer has been restricted."

Why not just use a group policy push? or some other systems management tool? I have yet to meet a business as large as the one you state that doesnt utilize some sort of systems management, patch management or group policy to aide in administration.

  8. Comment - Microsoft: Europe customers must wait to upgrade Vista to Windows 7

    3.0.9 (Jun 28, 2009 - 7:00 PM)

Lack of grammar and poor sentence structure aside, I would rather pay every 4 years for a new Windows OS than pay every 6-12 months for the next point release of an OS that restricts me as to the hardware I can run it on. Thanks thou.

  9. Comment - Microsoft: Europe customers must wait to upgrade Vista to Windows 7

    3.0.9 (Jun 27, 2009 - 8:20 AM)

So...Will the EU get a Windows 7 N E version without Media player or IE? Or will customers have to choose whether they want a media player OR a browser bundled with their OS? hmmm.....

Sock it to em microsoft. The EU and Opera need to learn that in the modern age, a browser is a necessity and Microsoft should not be forced to advertise it's competitors products. Nothing has stopped OEMs from bundling other browsers in the past, they simply chose not to.

  10. Comment - Windows 7: Will you pay to upgrade or won't you?

    3.0.9 (Jun 25, 2009 - 6:22 PM)

Where did you see that you can use the upgrade edition for a full install? Microsoft has never made that easy in the past.
