  2. Review - Novell Messenger

    1.0 Public Beta 2 (Feb 21, 2003)

OMG! about bloomin time. I remember rumours of novell doing such a product about 5 years ago!!! doesnt really apply anymore though, as Iv given up on Netware directory services/novell directory services/edirectory/whatever its called these days and just stick with active directory.

  3. Review - Wasabi

    3.0c Build 488 (Dec 18, 2002)

well on my slightly aged work pc with all my usual apps loaded winamp2 starts in 2 seconds, winamp 3 still takes 7 seconds. not good enough. its still poor at video playback. media library still isnt as easy to use or functional as WMP9's is. As for it being "beta", well no i dont really consider it being beta considering they had a launch party for it months ago now. Its not about the bugs though (which there dont seem to be many now) - its just the whole thing. The whole architecture was kinda a nice idea in theory, but in practice its too bloated and complex for what a media player needs to be. I'll stick to wmp9 and winamp2 thanx.

  4. Review - Windows Media Encoder

    9 Series Release Candidate (Nov 20, 2002)

akamatsu you're the one with problems apparently! this is ENCODER, not the player for a started! ANYWAY... wm series 9 rules, this encoder rules. Assuming encoder 9 will be free like 7 was then nothing can touch this.

  5. Review - Wasabi

    3.0 Alpha Build #491 (Nov 20, 2002)

ugh. I keep trying each build that comes out but I only end up using them once or twice before I go back to winamp2. Winamp3 is maybe great for people who just sit at their computer watching AVS all day (which there cant be many people surely?!)... Its useless as a video player, and as far as a mp3/music player goes I want something unobtrusive that just sits there in the corner of my screen, that is always there immediately when I want it and doesnt use so many resources it impacts on other apps Im using. Winamp3 fails in all those areas. WMP9 however... now that looks interesting! WMP9 is quick, its media library offers far quicker access to music than winamp3, it plays movies fine and is very inobstrusive in xp in its taskbar mode. Winamp3 was stillborn as far as im concerned, it never stood a chance.

he's only makin a big deal out of it because he hates being proven wrong - even when he knows he is. He's always been like this, ignore him, he gets over it eventually!

Havent we got enough file/folder related task items down the left already though?! As someone says further up, these library things are going to be showing lots of items (especially if they default to show all before filters are applied) - thats going to be a lot of list items in a ridiculously small space.

This kinda reminds me of a couple of weeks ago. I put money 2003 on my parents computer because the 1998 version was old and they wondered if a newer version would be more useful. The first thing they said was "is there any way to turn all this off at the bottom of the account transactions screen?" - There wasnt, at least I couldnt see the option anyway. Microsoft decided to waste a third of the screen with a transactions details and so at 1024x768 the transaction list only showed a weeks worth of transactions at a time - not good when you're trying to see what you have spent over the full month. They now want to downgrade back to 1998 because it was better!

My point is, its great being able to quickly see info and do things with a file once you have found it, but its not much use if it takes considerably longer than it used to to find the file in the first place.

Im not sure i like the huge graphical area under the tool bars for most windows. Its seriously reduces the amount of actual content the windows display. What with the tool bars, stupid graphical area and explorer bar on the left, thats leaves less than half the actual window area left for real content in most situations!

Or far better, just add the site to the trusted zones (it asks you if you wish to add the site to the trusted zone in the warning message box), so all other sites remain blocked. Im sure most uses dont visit more than 10 to 15 sites regularly anyway so adding that number to the trusted zone while leaving the security settings in place would be relatively quick and painless while leaving the security there for first visits to new sites in the future.

Its a bit of a QA issue, although once the page has loaded im sure most users will be able to figure out it actually means "SOME content has been blocked".
