  1. Review - Paint.NET

    3.50 (Nov 7, 2009)

Great freeware app that has evolved nicely in a relatively short period of time. Incredibly easy to use and very intuitive. Great for touch-ups, logos, web graphics, simple layering and text effects. Supports third party plugins for additional features, just google "paint.net plugins".

    @rom8_3139
for missing spray paint feature, simply use the spray paint add-in: (part of plugin pack)

  2. Review - AbiWord for Windows

    2.8.1 (Oct 30, 2009)

Wow this thing evolves WAY too slow. It's good for VERY basic docs. But there are better alternatives when you start to add tables/pictures/columns AND have to maintain close to perfect msoffice compatibility. (which today is STILL important when you have to send sending resumes/ebusiness documents/etc)

Softmaker office 2006 is also free, lightweight and fast to load, handles image placement better than abiword, and has better word and excel cross compatibility than Abiword and even openoffice (no I don't work for them but try it yourself):

    http://www.softmakeroffice.com

Needs registering, but if you open and close it a couple times you'll get a dialog box to skip registration altogether.

  3. Review - Ubuntu

    9.10 (Karmic Koala) Alpha 6 (Sep 17, 2009)

One of the better distros out there, would like to see application/menu font sizes better proportioned, still shows up like this:

    M Y D E F A U L T I C O N T E X T S H O U L D N O T B E T H I S W I D E BY D E F A U L T

The maintainer needs to get updated apps faster into main repository especially openoffice/pidgin/firefox. I shouldn't have to update distros or edit repository just to get the latest versions of applications. apt is rendered useless if the main repository itself contains outdated apps.

read my words: in 5 years, most of us will still be using windows and/or mac, that's just the reality. I'm not a brainwashed "IWantToBelieve(TM)".
5 years is not magically going to make single UI unification, stable ABi/API, or cause developers to leave profitable platforms and make apps for Linux Desktop. Linux Desktop is fine if you want a simple OS for web browsing/email, and light duty stuff. Otherwise Windows or MAC is still your best desktop all-purpose OS since it comes FREE with almost every new PC/MAC and it has more productivity and games. Using WINE really doesn't make sense, tehre should be more native apps. If viruses terrify you, run everything under sandboxie and get one of the many FREE antivirus out there.

  4. Review - Adobe Flash Player for Windows

    10.0.32.18 (Jul 31, 2009)

Awesome, they fixed the security issues relatively quickly. Don't know why there is such a negative vibe round here. Not like it slows my system down or anything. But for those heavy content/media sites it's a requirement to have.

  5. Review - AVG Anti-Virus Free

    8.5.285a1462 (Mar 27, 2009)

I've also been using this for years, works perfectly fine. I don't install the whole suite, just the resident shield option, I uncheck linkscanner/msoffice plugin/etc, and I also uncheck "enable daily scanning", since I don't visit any dubios web sites.

Latest tests from AVT-test.org March 2009 rate it 96% malware/87% adware detection, pretty good considering it's free.

    http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/09_02#March

Using resident shield option only, all core modules in process manager take up only 2200K total, not much at all, and doesn't slow down the system or affect gaming on my core 2duo 1.7mhz /2 gig ram.

As far as memory, you can pick up 4gig of ddr-2 800 memory for $33.00. Computer's and memory are ridiculously cheap nowadays, there's no excuse to still keep your pentium 4 or Athlon xp.

  6. Comment - Unconvinced by Windows 7? Ubuntu 9.10 debuted today!

    8.5.285a1462 (Oct 30, 2009 - 8:12 AM)

I found another parody site worth looking into:

Make sure to read the buglist before installing this version:

  7. Comment - Microsoft wins round one in its battle against Vista

    8.5.285a1462 (Oct 29, 2009 - 12:22 PM)

Can it play Counterstrike Source natively or play blu ray movies yet?

  8. Comment - Microsoft wins round one in its battle against Vista

    8.5.285a1462 (Oct 29, 2009 - 12:06 PM)

Just to clarify, Retail/Home Vista "retail" support will end in 2012, while business will get extended support/security updates into 2017. I think you can still apply a majority of future security updates/fixes for all versions of Vista until 2017. If not via windowsupdates then via autopatcher.

  9. Comment - Toshiba's $249 Blu-ray player vs. $299 PS3: The choice is obvious

    8.5.285a1462 (Sep 3, 2009 - 7:38 PM)

I'd imagine the price would drop to $199 or $179 within a year. Whereas PS3 would likely stay at that pricepoint until Sony tells them otherwise [due to Manufacturer Minimum Advertised Price ( MAP )]

I would be interested to learn if any of the up-conversion/post processing SD tricks from the XDE-500 are in the unit.

Guess we'll have to wait and see..

  10. Comment - Windows 7: Don't upgrade, says FSF, your civil rights are in jeopardy

Looks like they're looking for a FUD manager, er campaign manager:
